Gwen's tragic fate served as a harsh wake-up call for James. The grim reality weighed heavily on him, leading him to conclude that it was best to keep his distance from her. The last thing he wanted was to pull Gwen out from the safety of Peter's protective shadow and into a world fraught with danger.

Even as he prepared to take on the mantle of a Zodiac Knight, doubts lingered in his mind. The Zodiac Knights had failed to protect their own goddess, Saori, time and again. Her survival amidst numerous crises was a testament to her destiny, not to their strength.

Gwen, on the other hand, lacked that kind of resilience. One wrong move could lead to disaster; a single misstep could cost her everything. As much as he valued their friendship, James knew that deeper feelings would only invite trouble.

"Thank you," Gwen said earnestly, her gaze unwavering. "You know who I am."

"Yeah, I do," James replied, trying to keep it casual. "If you need any books, just grab them yourself. If you like this spot, I'll make sure to keep it clear for you."

Gwen sighed, a hint of frustration in her voice. "You don't have to pretend. I know it's you. And if you're worried about being exposed or don't want to admit it, I won't push you. I also think the police have it wrong about you. You're not someone who recklessly harms innocents."

James coughed lightly, feeling the weight of her words. Desperate to change the subject, he pointed behind her. "Hey, isn't that Mr. Will passing by?"

Gwen turned to look, spotting a white-haired man in a black vest. As he walked past, Mr. Will acknowledged James, teasing him about his knack for avoiding direct confrontation while still recognizing his good nature.

Once Mr. Will left, Gwen turned her attention back to James. "So, you know him well?"

"Yeah, something like that," James replied, subtly urging her to leave. But Gwen was undeterred. She took a seat beside him, making him acutely aware of her skirt and the closeness between them. Ignoring his subtle hints, she hugged his arm, a gesture that felt both comforting and dangerous.

As they talked, Gwen's perceptive nature surfaced. "I've noticed things, James. I can't help but wonder if you're… Sentinel."

James felt panic rise within him. "What? No, that's ridiculous," he stammered, attempting to dismiss her speculation, but her keen observations made it difficult to stay composed.

Their conversation ended abruptly when James stood up, his mind racing for excuses. Gwen, sensing his unease, followed him. "Wait! You can't just leave. I'm excited to know someone like you, a superhero!"

Amid their banter, Gwen dropped another hint, mentioning that Peter might have an inkling of James's true identity. She advised him to treat Jessica well, cautioning that any misstep could lead to exposure.

Later, in class, Gwen stumbled across a familiar formula on a piece of paper, written in Peter's handwriting. Her eyes widened with curiosity and astonishment as she wondered about its origin and significance, her mind racing with possibilities.

James's heart sank at the thought of keeping his secrets hidden in a world where everything felt precarious.
