"What's Dr. Connors up to? Is he really about to kick off a live experiment with lizard gene regeneration?"
Peter Parker's voice was laced with excitement, his pulse quickening at the thought. He had a nagging suspicion that his own spider genes were somehow intertwined with Dr. Connors' work. The implications were too significant to ignore, and he couldn't shake the feeling that his own fate hung in the balance.
Gwen Stacy sighed, tucking a stray hair behind her ear. "I just wrapped up injecting the white rat last night. We're still waiting on the final results."
"Can I come watch tonight? This stuff fascinates me." Peter's enthusiasm was infectious, prompting a smile from Gwen.
After a brief discussion, they decided to head to the Osborne Building's lab later that evening.
Jameson, initially reluctant, was busy tinkering with the Zodiac Suitcase. But Peter, ever persistent, managed to convince him to come along, leaving James with no choice but to join them.
As dusk settled, the trio arrived at the Osborne Building. Guided by Gwen, they navigated the familiar hallways, each step echoing with anticipation.
The lab, usually alive with activity at this hour, was eerily quiet and dimly lit, casting long shadows across the floor. It was as if the building itself was holding its breath.
After Gwen unlocked the door, they entered to find Dr. Connors slumped over on the table in his office, his breathing steady but his expression troubled.
James cast a glance at Dr. Connors' right arm, noting the cocoon-like wrap surrounding the regrown hand. It was a clear sign—the serum had been injected, and the lizard gene regeneration was in progress.
"This is it," James thought, a mixture of concern and curiosity bubbling within him. The transformation would soon extend throughout Dr. Connors' body, turning him into a human-lizard hybrid—a genuine Doctor Lizard. The potential for unprecedented strength, agility, and resilience was both thrilling and frightening.
Gwen and Peter gently shook Dr. Connors awake. As he blinked back sleep, his eyes widened at the sight of his regrown hand, tears of joy threatening to spill.
"Congrats, Doctor! Looks like the experiment's a success," Gwen and Peter exclaimed, genuine pride evident in their voices.
But the smile faded from Dr. Connors' face as reality set in. Learning of Parker's lineage from Richard Parker cast a shadow over the moment. The absence of Richard's research had delayed Connors' work for years, and though he had finally accessed the decay rate algorithm, the Osborne Group had pulled funding, leaving him stranded.
Despite these burdens, Dr. Connors chose to focus on the success of his experiment, trying to mask the pain of disrupted dreams.
As they discussed the experiment, James remained quiet, his resolve hardening as he prepared for whatever might come next.
Suddenly, Dr. Connors paused, his expression shifting to one of alarm. He grabbed his phone, his knuckles white as he listened intently. "No… this can't go through!" he exclaimed, slamming his hand on the table.
Peter and Gwen moved to intervene, but James instinctively held Gwen back, sensing the rising tension.
"You have to stop him!" Dr. Connors urged Peter, his voice tinged with desperation.
"Stop who?" Peter asked, confusion etching his features.
Ignoring Peter's question, Dr. Connors rushed toward the door, green scales beginning to appear on his neck.
James stepped in front of him, his demeanor calm but firm. "Dr. Connors, please. Just take a moment to breathe."
But the turmoil within Dr. Connors surged, the lizard genes overwhelming his human side. In an instant, he began to transform, his body contorting into that of a towering, humanoid Lizard.
As the final echoes of his humanity slipped away, a primal roar erupted from his throat. James braced himself, readying for what could be their most challenging encounter yet. The lab, once a place of discovery, had now become the stage for a battle against a creation gone awry.
