"Well," Peter nodded, leaping onto the window sill to shoot a strand of spider silk, "I'll take the lead…"
Before he could finish his sentence, a black blur streaked past him. James, his wings unfurled, shot forward like an arrow.
"You're cheating with those wings!" Peter exclaimed, shooting a web to swing after James. He had assumed James would take longer to arrive, as he did the previous night, but he had forgotten that James was clad in the Sentinel suit today, which granted him unparalleled speed.
Today, James flew like a civilian airliner, covering over 30 kilometers in less than three minutes.
He arrived in a desolate area, devoid of buildings, and hovered in the air, scanning the grass for the ringing phone.
"Damn it!" James cursed as he finally found the phone.
After regaining his composure, he deduced that Gwen had sent the text about twenty minutes ago. If the phone was lost shortly after, the kidnapper's taxi couldn't have gotten far.
With only one road leading out of the area, James inferred the taxi would have headed away from the city. Determined to pursue, he calculated that the taxi was likely traveling at 70 kilometers per hour. At his current velocity, he could reach it in just over a minute.
Sure enough, a minute later, James spotted a taxi idling in the woods, its engine still running.
Inside the taxi, Gwen feared the worst.
The driver had brought her to a remote wooded area in the dead of night, brandishing a gun and ordering her to undress. Sensing the gravity of the situation, Gwen decided to resist.
Though physically overpowered, she fought back fiercely, biting the driver's ear and inciting his rage. He retaliated with a vicious slap, but before he could strike again, his head was sent flying, courtesy of James's intervention.
With the threat neutralized, James scooped up Gwen, relieved to find her unharmed. Carrying her away, he encountered Peter, who had located the discarded phone.
"Found anyone?" Peter sighed, exhaustion evident in his voice. "I'm beat; there are no trees to swing from out here."
James surveyed the distant lights before placing Gwen by the roadside and taking flight with Peter.
Minutes later, police cars arrived, whisking Gwen away to safety.
Returning to the building, Peter couldn't resist his curiosity. "Hey James, I know it's personal, but where'd you get that armor?"
"Just traded it for a phone bill," James quipped, trying to lighten the mood after the tense ordeal.
"Don't joke; I'm genuinely curious," Peter pressed.
"It's not something you can learn," James replied cryptically.
Back in the attic, James resumed his training regimen, undeterred by the night's events.
As the Zodiac box emerged, James immersed himself in cosmic energy, the Phoenix's emblem blazing on his back.
Despite the excruciating pain, James's consciousness drifted back to the vast training grounds, where he sparred alongside his enigmatic companions, each growing stronger with every encounter.
