The cool embrace of fresh air welcomed James once again, though the sensation felt weaker than when he first began his journey. He realized it wouldn't be long before this feeling vanished altogether—a sign of his growing strength and adaptation.
Meanwhile, at the Osborne Group Building, the experiment was reaching a critical phase. Norman Osborn had been unable to procure a decay rate algorithm, but Dr. Connors had made significant progress in his research.
Today marked the beginning of live trials, and as Dr. Connors's chief intern, Gwen was eager to witness this pivotal moment. Her contributions to the decay rate algorithm had been substantial, and she hoped her work would lead to a breakthrough.
In Dr. Connors's lab, Gwen, clad in a crisp white lab coat, meticulously recorded data as Dr. Connors operated the complex computer program. After numerous failed attempts, the calculations for the in vivo test finally succeeded, signaling the start of the live trial.
With excitement coursing through their veins, Dr. Connors and Gwen prepared to administer the injection to the lab rat. Now, they could only wait to observe the creature's reaction—a nerve-wracking process, regardless of the outcome.
As evening approached, Gwen bid farewell to Dr. Connors and exited the Osborne Group Building. Downstairs, she attempted to call her father, but he didn't answer. He had promised to pick her up from work, but a last-minute assignment had derailed that plan.
Left with no other choice, Gwen hailed a taxi to take her home.
During the ride, she mindlessly scrolled through the news on her phone. Ten minutes later, she glanced out the window and realized they were on an unfamiliar road.
"Driver, this isn't the way to my address, is it?" she asked, a knot of unease forming in her stomach.
The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror, flashing a smile that did little to reassure her. "Don't worry, just taking a shortcut. We'll be there soon."
"Oh," Gwen said, relaxing slightly back in her seat, but she kept her finger hovering over her phone, ready to send a message if needed.
*I might be in trouble. The taxi driver is taking me down an unfamiliar road. Send help.*
After sending the message to her father, Sheriff George, and to James, her phone rang. Before she could check the caller ID, the driver abruptly stopped the car and brandished a dark object.
"Girl, hand over the phone," he demanded, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Gwen's heart raced as she complied, fear flooding her senses. With the phone confiscated, the driver warned her not to move, brandishing a gun to emphasize his threat.
As the car resumed its journey, the reality of her situation set in—she was being kidnapped. With a gun-wielding criminal behind the wheel, she feared for her life.
What could she do? Would her father be able to track her down in time? And—
Back in the building, James let out a sigh of relief. After an extensive practice session, he had fully recovered his strength.
Checking his phone, he noticed a message titled "Go away." The number looked familiar—Gwen's. To avoid detection, he had saved it under the name "gun" in Chinese Pinyin, a phonetic nod to Gwen's name.
*Why would Gwen text me?*
Opening the message, he was met with a chilling plea for help. Initially skeptical, he noted the timestamp—9:30 PM. Their relationship wasn't at the prank-pulling stage, nor was it April Fool's Day.
Dialing Peter's number, James wasted no time.
"Hey, James, what's up at this hour?" Peter's voice sounded cheerful, indicating his date with Jessica had gone well.
"Are you still with Jessica?" James cut to the chase.
"Hold on, Jessica, it's for you. Hey, James, what's going on?" Jessica's voice replaced Peter's.
"Do you have Gwen's home phone number? Call and see if she's there. Don't ask why; I'll explain later. Just call Parker now."
After relaying the message, James continued, "Do you know any computer hackers? I need to track a phone's location and access city surveillance footage to trace a taxi."
"I know someone online. I'll reach out."
After Peter hung up, Jessica's anxious voice came through, "Gwen's not home. What's wrong?"
"Got it. Where are you? I'll come find you."
"No need. We're heading to Jessica's. I'll find you later." Peter's response came quickly before he ended the call.
Attempting to reach Gwen on her phone yielded no response. James sat down to meditate, trying to clear his mind for a moment.
Gwen had answered Dr. Connors's call earlier in the day and likely hailed a taxi after leaving the Osborne Building. If Peter's hacker friend could tap into surveillance and trace the taxi, they might find her.
Kidnappings weren't just plot devices—they were real, and Gwen's life felt like a twisted imitation of a thriller.
Just as Peter swung into action, his hacker friend, Hyde, began his work.
Given Gwen's identity, Hyde assumed the police should have been alerted by now. Hacking into the police system, he sought to locate Gwen's phone and any available surveillance footage.
As James awaited Peter's update, the fiery glow of Sentinel's armor enveloped him, a stark reminder that time was of the essence.
"Sentinel's suit?" Peter's eyes gleamed with admiration at James's transformation.
Nodding, James replied, "We need to act quickly. Let's go."
