Legacy of Harry Potter

Chapter 168: Inheritance Test

November 1994

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Hermione had just finished her breakfast and was heading towards the Hogwarts' kitchen to continue what she had been doing it for past month.

Her mind was a mess now. It was preoccupied at all the sudden events which had happened over the past 2 month and particularly, the day before yesterday.

She had not been too shocked at Voldemort's appearance. After all from the first year itself, she along with Harry and Ron had found clues about Voldemort being still alive.

But everything after than has been a shock. The way Harry and Voldemort battled… had just flipped her entire worldview.

She had always been too proud of her magical mastery, her mastery of the spells. She had felt that once she completed her Hogwarts' education, she would become a formidable witch but now she understood the reality.

She was about to reach her destination when she felt a sudden presence ahead of her.

"Harry…" she stammered in surprise.

"Good morning, Hermione," Harry greeted her warmly with a smile.

"Good morning, Harry," she replied with a hesitation.

Although she did not feel any fear from Harry just because he had revealed so much power… she felt certain apprehensions. The relation between them had not remained same.

Harry, during the break after third year had completely changed. He had completely fallen with Ron while though he treated her nicely, it was definitely not the same.

Harry closed the distance between them and asked, "Where are you heading, Hermione?"

"Nowhere," she mumbled.

Harry nodded, "Care to come with me?"

"Where?" she asked.

Harry did not answer, instead he asked back, "Afraid?"

Hermione shook her head, "But I at least still need to know."

"Gringotts," he said.

"Why?" she asked back in surprise.

"You will find soon enough," Harry said as he stretched his right hand.

A hesitation flashed across Hermione's face. She took a deep breath to calm her emotions and ultimately Harry's hand.

The duo vanished with a twist of space.

Gringotts Wizarding Bank

When the duo reappeared next, they were in a small room. A goblin with a smiling face was greeting them.

Hermione, taken by surprise at the presence of a goblin who was grinning ear to ear with his pointed teeth was taken aback in fear. She nearly stumbled and fell on the floor only for Harry to hold her.

"Easy there Hermione," he said with a chuckle.

"Hello, Miss. Granger," the goblin greeted politely but his grin did not falter.

"He is Sharptooth," Harry introduced the goblin. "One of my account managers."

"Hello, Mr. Sharptooth," Hermione greeted rather politely.

The goblin only grinned back in response.

"Thankyou, Mr. Sharptooth," said Harry. "For granting me special permission to apparate directly inside the Gringotts."

"It is a small matter, Lord Potter," Sharptooth said. "Your status and wealth easily make you the most prized customer of Gringotts and I can easily vouch for your character."

"And while we are infamous for treating all our customers rudely, our king would definitely be willing to some respect to someone like you," said Sharptooth with a chuckle.

"Is everything ready?" Asked Harry.

"Yes," said Sharptooth. "Follow me."

Sharptooth marched ahead while Harry and Hermione followed behind the goblin.

"Harry," Hermione whispered. "What is all this about?"

"You will know soon Hermione," said Harry. "And hopefully what I am thinking is correct."

"And what are you thinking?" Asked Hermione with another whisper.

Harry did not say anything and merely shook his head. Hermione pouted in annoyance. She had now started to feel comfortable in Harry's presence.

Soon, the trio boarded a cartwheel and made an exhilarating journey very deep inside Gringotts. They finally made their way inside an extremely large hall with a very high ceiling.

In the centre of the hall was a square shaped stone altar. At the top of the altar was a bowl made of some kind of Red Crystal. This was the same place where Harry had taken his inheritance test.

Hermione was in awe of the majesty of the place as she looked around in wonder.

"This room is humongous," she murmured in disbelief.

"That it is, Miss. Granger," he said with a proud expression.

"Hermione," Harry called as he walked towards the altar and she followed behind him.

Sharptooth handed a small silver knife to Harry who then passed it to Hermione and she was shocked and surprised by this.

"What I am to do with this?" She asked with a frown and in confusion even though she had a slight inkling what was this all about.

"Drop few drops of your blood in the bowl," Harry said.

"Why?" she questioned clenching the knife tightly. A panic was spreading on her face.

"Relax," said Harry. "It is nothing dangerous… it is an inheritance test."

"Trust me," Harry reassured with a smile.

Hermione gritted her teeth but finally relented. She made a small slash on her palm and let few drops of blood fall in the bowl.

After absorbing few drops of blood, the bowl started to glow. A single line- golden line emerged from it was connected to one name- Helga Hufflepuff.

Hermione stared wide eyed at the line and she with her large common sense could easily deduce the meaning of this. She was the heir of one of the Hogwarts' founder- Helga Hufflepuff.
