Chapter 25: The Seal Of Obedience
The moonlight spilled across the quiet streets of Konoha as Sayuri Arata, the elegant and enigmatic benefactor, sat at her desk. In truth, this was just another layer of disguise for Raven (Kushina Uzumaki), who worked tirelessly to secure her adopted son Naruto's future while keeping her true identity a secret. Tonight, however, her usual calm demeanor was tinged with annoyance.
"Root operatives again," she muttered, her Rinnegan shimmering faintly under her transformation jutsu. She could sense the faint presence of someone lurking near her home, just outside the barrier seals she had carefully constructed.
Yuumi, perched lazily on a nearby windowsill, flicked her tails. "They're getting bolder. I'm almost impressed."
Sayuri smirked, standing and brushing off her robe. "Let's see who Danzo sent this time."
Stepping outside into the cool night air, Sayuri's eyes immediately caught the faint flicker of movement near the edge of her property. Her seals activated briefly, revealing the silhouette of a masked operative attempting to infiltrate her barrier.
With a flick of her wrist, Sayuri sent one of her puppets forward, a sleek bird-like construct crafted from chakra-infused wood. The puppet darted silently toward the operative, its sharp talons slicing through the air.
The Root agent dodged, their movements fluid and precise, but Sayuri was already prepared. With a sharp motion, her Life-Breaker Chakra Chains erupted from the ground, wrapping around the agent and pinning them in place.
"Gotcha," Sayuri said, her voice cool and steady as she approached the struggling figure.
The Root operative glared at her through their mask, their voice muffled but defiant. "You'll regret this."
Sayuri raised an eyebrow. "Bold words for someone who just got caught."
As she drew closer, her eyes narrowed. Something about the agent's chakra felt… off. Her gaze shifted to their neck, where a faint glowing seal was etched into the skin, pulsing with ominous energy.
"Ah, so that's how Danzo keeps his little puppets in line," Sayuri murmured, crouching down to inspect the seal. Her Rinnegan activated, allowing her to analyze its intricate design. The seal's complexity reminded her of a particular snake-like individual from her past.
"Orochimaru," she said under her breath, her tone laced with disgust.
Yuumi's voice echoed in her mind. "That slimy creep was involved with this? Makes sense. Only he would come up with something so twisted."
Sayuri straightened, her expression hardening. "This is the Seal of Obedience. Orochimaru uses it to enforce loyalty by suppressing free will. I've seen it before."—Naruto's memories of the Chunin Exams make it all too clear.
The agent struggled against her chains, their voice tense. "You don't know what you're doing. This seal can't be removed. Please don't mess with it, or you will get me killed."
Sayuri smirked, her hands glowing with chakra as she formed a series of intricate hand seals. "I wouldn't underestimate an Uzumaki, especially not one with a Rinnegan. Let's see if this little trick is as foolproof as you think."
Sayuri's hands moved in a blur as she combined her Uzumaki knowledge with her Rinnegan's ability to perceive chakra flows. Her chains tightened around the agent, holding them still as she focused on the glowing mark.
The seal pulsed violently, resisting her efforts, but Sayuri was undeterred. "You can fight all you want, but I've dealt with worse. This is child's play compared to the seals Grandma Mito used to create."
With a final surge of chakra, the seal cracked, its glow fading into nothingness. The Root operative gasped, their body trembling as the oppressive weight of the seal lifted.
"You… freed me?" the agent whispered, their voice no longer defiant but confused.
Sayuri nodded, her expression calm but sharp. "You're welcome. Now, tell me your name."
The operative hesitated before answering. "Riko. My name is Riko."
"Riko," Sayuri repeated, stepping back and releasing the chains. "Do you realize what Danzo has done to you? That seal wasn't just about loyalty—it suppressed your free will. You've been his puppet."
Riko's hands clenched into fists. "I didn't… I didn't know. I thought… I thought I was serving the village."
Sayuri's gaze softened slightly. "You were manipulated. But now, you're free. What you do next is up to you."
Riko looked down, her expression conflicted. "If he finds out… If Danzo knows I've been freed, he'll—"
"Relax," Sayuri interrupted, a faint smirk on her lips. "I'm not going to throw you to the wolves. Danzo doesn't need to know anything."
Yuumi chimed in, her tone teasing. "Unless you decide to run straight back to him, of course."
Riko glanced at Sayuri, her voice hesitant. "Why did you help me? You don't even know me."
Sayuri folded her arms, her expression unreadable. "Let's just say I have a soft spot for people who've been used and discarded. Besides, Danzo's meddling is getting on my nerves. Consider this… a warm-up."
Riko nodded slowly, still processing the situation. "I won't tell anyone about this. Thank you."
"Good," Sayuri said, her tone firm. "Now go. And Riko—be careful. Root doesn't forgive easily."
With a final glance, Riko disappeared into the night, her chakra signature fading into the distance.
Back inside her home, Sayuri sat by the window, her fingers tracing patterns on the glass as she thought about what had just transpired.
"That seal," she murmured, "it's a direct line to Danzo's control. If I can find more agents like Riko and break their seals…"
"You're thinking of turning his own people against him," Yuumi said, lounging on the windowsill with a sly grin. "Classic Kushina."
Sayuri smirked. "I'm thinking of giving them a choice. Something Danzo never did. A choice to serve a higher calling."
Yuumi flicked her tail. "And if they choose loyalty to him?"
"Then I'll deal with it," Sayuri said simply, her tone resolute. "But if even a few of them turn, it'll be enough to plant doubt in his organization. And doubt is the first crack in any foundation."
Yuumi chuckled. "You're building a secret army, little fox. What's next, a pizza-themed revolution?"
"Don't tempt me," Sayuri said with a laugh. "But first, I need to figure out how to make the seals look like they're still active. If Danzo doesn't suspect anything, I can work without interference."
