Chapter 26: Cracks In The Foundation
The cool morning air drifted through the streets of Konoha, but within the walls of the Krusty Kunai, Kushina Uzumaki—known to most as Sayuri Arata—was hard at work, far beneath her parents' pizza shop. The secret underground training area, carved with her own hands and chakra, echoed with the faint hum of Nature Chakra being channeled through the air.
At the center of the chamber, Kushina crouched with her hands pressed firmly against the earth, her violet Rinnegan glowing faintly under her transformation jutsu. The ground trembled slightly as she poured Nature Chakra into it, forcing a sprout to emerge.
"Almost there," she muttered, beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
The tiny sprout grew a few inches before shaking violently and collapsing into a puff of dust. Kushina fell back with a sigh, wiping her brow as Yuumi lounged nearby, her nine tails swishing lazily.
"Well, that was dramatic," Yuumi said, smirking. "If you're trying to grow pizza toppings, I'd suggest a different approach."
"Funny," Kushina shot back, her tone dry. "But I think I'm making progress. At least this one didn't disintegrate immediately."
Yuumi tilted her head, her blue eyes gleaming with amusement. "You've got the chakra reserves for it, little fox—33 Standard Kakashi Units, if my calculations are right—but you're still struggling to control it. Nature Chakra isn't something you can brute-force."
"I know," Kushina said, pushing herself back to her feet. "It's about balance. I just… need more practice."
Yuumi flicked her tail. "That, and you need to stop thinking of yourself as Hashirama reincarnated. Wood Release isn't something you can master overnight, even with all those scrolls from Grandma Mito."
Kushina smirked faintly. "One step at a time, Yuumi."
Far across the village, in the shadowy depths of Root's headquarters, Danzo Shimura paced back and forth, his visible eye narrowing as he reviewed a series of reports laid out on his desk.
"Failures. Every single one of you," he growled, glaring at the operatives kneeling before him. "How is it that a single woman—a writer, no less—is making fools of my entire organization?"
One of the operatives hesitated before speaking. "Lord Danzo, the villagers… they're rallying behind her. Her public appearances, her donations… the people adore her. Every time we spread a rumor, they dismiss it."
Danzo's grip on his cane tightened, his frustration evident. "Fools. All of them. She's manipulating them, using that ridiculous book of hers to sway their loyalty."
Another operative muttered under their breath, "The book's not that bad…"
Danzo's cane slammed against the floor, silencing the room. "Say that again, and I'll have you reassigned to the most remote post I can find."
While Danzo fumed, a shadow slipped through the streets of Konoha, moving silently past bustling vendors and watchful eyes. Riko, the freed Root operative, approached the edge of Sayuri's barrier—a nearly invisible line of chakra that kept unwanted guests away.
With quick, precise movements, Riko placed a folded message near the barrier's edge before retreating into the shadows. The note shimmered briefly as the barrier absorbed it, delivering it directly to Sayuri's underground training grounds.
Kushina, now seated at her workbench, glanced up as the note materialized in front of her. She unfolded it carefully, her eyes scanning the coded message.
"She's requesting a meeting," Kushina murmured, her expression thoughtful.
Yuumi hopped onto the table, her tails curling around her as she peered at the note. "She's taking a risk. If Danzo finds out she's meeting you, she's done."
"She knows the risks," Kushina said, folding the note and tucking it away. "But she's willing to take them. That means she's serious."
Yuumi's smirk returned. "You've got a knack for collecting strays, little fox. First me, now her. Who's next?"
Kushina grinned. "Let's find out."
Before her meeting with Riko, Kushina decided to squeeze in more training. She returned to the center of the chamber, her hands forming seals as she focused on the Nature Chakra coursing through her.
"Alright," she muttered. "Let's try this again."
This time, she visualized the tree she wanted to create—a sturdy sapling with deep roots and strong branches. She channeled her chakra carefully, feeding it into the ground in controlled bursts.
A small sprout emerged, trembling slightly before stabilizing. It grew slowly, inch by inch, until it reached her knee. Kushina's eyes lit up with excitement.
"I did it!" she exclaimed, her voice echoing in the chamber.
Yuumi raised an eyebrow. "Congratulations. You've officially grown a shrub. I'm so proud."
Kushina laughed, brushing dirt off her hands. "Hey, it's progress. And someday, this 'shrub' will turn into a forest."
Later that evening, Kushina donned her Sayuri disguise and made her way to the designated meeting spot—a secluded area near the edge of the village. Riko was already waiting, her posture tense as she scanned the surroundings.
