Chapter 12: Blazes, blazes, and more blazes
Gim had stopped as his feet felt heavy. He cursed inwardly. 'Why does it have to be soul sand?' He trudged along, the weight of his feet feeling like it was getting heavier. After going down the netherrack hill, he had dodged a lava-fall, slew a magma cube, and stumbled across the biggest and the most annoying beach in hell. The sand was dark and brown, with the properties of quicksand. It had dozens of gruesome faces carved into it. As if the sand was host to all the explorers who had been damned for eternity in the Nether. Nonetheless, he continued forwards slowly. After he finally crossed the soul sand, he sat down on an isolated block made up of mahogany colored bricks. He was too tired to notice what he had sat down on.
Gim pulled out a few slices of bread from his backpack. He wolfed them down eagerly, nearly suffocating on the food. He smiled, the bread reminding him of the village. He was doing this for them he would constantly tell himself. 'And Steve.'
Once his hunger had dissipated and he stood up, he finally realized what he had sat down on. "Nether brick?!" He looked around in quick movements of excitement. Nothing but lava and netherrack around, with the exception of soul sand behind him could be seen. "I must be getting close to a Nether fortress." He grinned. He quickly tore down a chunk of land, collecting a stack of blocks in only brief seconds thanks to the quality of his diamond pickaxe.
He decided to be risky, and began building a bridge that could cross the river of lava. After his netherrack ran out, he had to go harvest some more, and continued on building. He had to go back and forth four times before finally being able to reach the other end of the lava. Once he saw land, he made a dramatic leap, about a foot from where he stood and rolled into a landing. He looked behind, as the bridge faded from the distance he traveled. When he saw what stood in front of him, he knew it was worth every stack of netherrack.
"Who knew I'd find it so quick!" He laughed as he wasted no time and started climbing the massive dark building. It was a large castle-like structure made with the same bricks he had seen earlier. The height of it reached all the way to the ceiling. There were two large towers on opposite ends connected by two bridges. The structure was pretty bare, except for a few window frames decorating the sides. It seemed the fortress was built focusing on defense, to withstand the monsters it contained.
As much as he wanted to explore the inside, Gim had a captured hero to rescue. He climbed upwards, with a few powerful jumps. He stabbed his sword into the wall and hurled himself up with all his strength, landing at the scalp of the stronghold. The sound of metal grinding against flames, and a ghastly groan got his attention. Ahead of him was a Blaze; An entity with a flaming head, and shiny golden yellow rods circling its body.
The Blaze saw Gim and hissed in contempt, as he spit out three fireballs in a rapid motion. Gim dodged two of the fireballs and deflected the third using his sword. He quickly charged forwards, before the hellish creature could retaliate. He slashed his sword, aiming for the head. The Blaze wailed in agony, and one of the floating rods around it broke, dissolving into the air. The Blaze seemed to burn brighter now enraged, as it spit out another set of fireballs.
Naturally, Gim dodged these and slashed the Blaze a second time. 'Huh? I've played Minecraft before, he shoulda died by now!" Gimmick was sure that two attacks from his diamond blade would be enough to destroy it, but in this case its life seemed to be connected to the rods encircling it. "Bring it on demon!" He challenged, receiving a hiss of understanding from the Blaze. Now that he had figured the creature's pattern, slaying it would be a piece of cake. He rushed to the Blaze again, rolling to the side, dodging a set of fireballs a little too close for comfort.
He swung his sword down various times until the Blaze wailed and disappeared with a cloud of smoke, leaving nothing but its life essence and a Blaze rod. He quickly picked it up and continued further across. He walked through an arch that was connected by Nether brick walls. He held his sword and continued moving. As he reached a crossroad with a small patch of souls sand and some stairs a familiar grinding and hissing sound filled him with excitement.
The sound of hundreds of Blazes could be heard coming from multiple directions.
