Chapter 02
Finally, it’s time for Iris’s prologue to begin.
If this were a game, I would have taught her basic combat tips starting today, but I had already taught her enough in the past two months. I should have taught her cooking during that time.
But I couldn’t take her to the training ground and say,
“Swing the controller to perform a basic attack.”
“Speak the spell into the microphone attached to the headset.”
If I did that, I would be treated like a crazy person, and Iris would surely send a carrier pigeon to her father saying that I had gone mad.
The protagonist of Part 1 didn’t reply to letters, but he did read all the letters Iris sent him. In other words, if her parents received a complaint from Iris, my head and body would definitely say goodbye to each other.
So, I taught her everything that was in Werner’s head, from swordsmanship to magic and archery. However, I only taught her the very basics.
Still, she was the child of a talented person, so she learned quickly. But her impatience was a problem, as she often fell and rolled around.
“Master, aren’t we training today?”
“I’ve taught you almost all the basics.”
“Wow! So we’re going to play, right?”
“No, you need to experience real combat.”
I had just moved the schedule a little ahead of the actual gameplay. There probably wouldn’t be any big problems.
I opened the door of the Adventurers’ Guild, and the unpleasant smell of sweat and cheap alcohol filled my nose. It was a smell that I always encountered when I came here.
“Handsome magician, is the girl next to you your daughter?”
“Hey, I’m still in my twenties.”
“You’re almost thirty, so you’re thirty.”
“I’m going to quit this job and have a proper tantrum.”
I exchanged silly jokes with the female receptionist at the counter. Then Iris, who was standing next to me, puffed up her cheeks and pulled my arm.
“Master! What are you doing?”
“Sorry… it’s been a while, so…”
Her impatient personality didn’t even allow time for joking around. It was clear that she had inherited this trait from her father.
The protagonist of Part 1 was also impatient, just like her. However, he didn’t puff up his cheeks like this.
As I looked at the request board for a suitable quest, I saw the quest that the protagonist had performed in Chapter 1.
[Please help us deal with the beasts that have come down to the farm.]
[We are looking for someone to help solve the problem of delinquents appearing in the pub.]
[Please find my lost wallet.]
These three quests were all taken by Iris to buy a new dish after she broke the one that Werner cherished. I realized that these quests had been posted a few days before Iris took them. Still, there was no better way to improve her skills, so I tore off three quest papers and brought them to the counter.
“Oh my. What made you take on these quests? Did you get hurt somewhere?”
“Be quiet. It’s not me, it’s the kid next to me who’s going to do them.”
“Then we need to register the little girl first.”
Oh, I had forgotten that to take on a quest, you first had to be certified by the Adventurers’ Guild. It seemed that living with a fool had infected me with foolishness. I couldn’t keep excusing her for being innocent forever.
The staff member at the counter brought out a crystal ball and instructed Iris to place her hand on it. When Iris placed her delicate white hand on the crystal ball, her information appeared above it.
[Iris Reyes]
Strength: C+
Magic: C
Agility: C
Compatible Attributes: 5
Intelligence: E
Rank: Unregistered
“Haha!”
Everything else was decent for the beginning, but her intelligence rating of E was laughable. E meant that she had to give up on that aspect.
“Don’t laugh!”
“Even if you put a rock in there, it would get a D, but if it gets an E, haha…”
The production team intended to emphasize her innocence, but people perceived it as just stupidity. Well, I kind of liked that aspect of her.
“Then you try it too, Master! You’re a villain who bullies a girl like me, so your personality must be F!”
“You fool, personality isn’t even listed, and there’s no F. The E next to your intelligence is the lowest rank.”
When I placed my hand on the crystal ball, a brighter light shone than when Iris had placed her hand on it, and my information appeared.
[Werner Alten]
Strength: A
Magic: SSS
Agility: A+
Compatible Attributes: ALL
Intelligence: SS
Rank: S
“See, I’m an insurmountable wall that you can’t surpass.”
“Yes, I understand that personality and ability are separate.”
“You may worship the greatness of this master.”
“Hmph! My dad is even more amazing…”
Before Iris could say anything stupid, I covered her mouth. She seemed to realize that she had almost made a mistake, so I removed my hand.
In fact, the reason Werner died was because Iris publicly revealed that she was the daughter of the protagonist of Dragnity Fantasy 1.
Still, it wasn’t an exaggeration to say that her father was stronger than me.
“What, if your dad was measured here, would all his ranks be SSS?”
“Haha, that’s not possible.”
It’s true, I’ve seen it enough times. So, it was problematic to reveal this fact to the outside world. Whether I was killed by her father or she revealed who her real father was, I didn’t want to die.
“Miss Iris Reyes, your registration is complete, and we’ve also assigned you all the quests you brought. Good luck.”
“Thank you so much!”
“And Werner, it must be tough teaching your disciple.”
“Haha, are you worried about me? I can’t handle confessions.”
“Werner, go eat some candy.”
Irina Mirthil, the receptionist at the Adventurers’ Guild in our current city of Bekem, was also a friend of Werner’s. I remember her being quite popular as a pretty female character. Let’s take a look at some of the posts about her…
Title: Honestly, isn’t Irina prettier than Iris?
Reply: You’re an Icarus fanboy.
Reply: You’re blind…
Reply: Next, you’re an Iris fan.
Title: I brought a manga of Irina and Werner.
Reply: I like Iris and Jena together.
Reply: You’re crazy.
Reply: Thumbs up.
Title: Honestly, isn’t Irina the true heroine for Werner?
Reply: They’ve been friends for 20 years, so that says it all.
Reply: These days, childhood friends are fake.
Reply: That’s because you don’t have any friends.
There were many useless posts like these, but to summarize, Irina was very popular for an early NPC, and there were a lot of fan arts of her. Many people preferred her over Iris, who was considered a nuisance.
“So, what should we do first?”
“We should start with the closest and quickest one.”
We decided to go to the pub where the client had complained about delinquents causing trouble. After walking for about an hour, we arrived at a slum with poor security.
The people in the slum stared at us, and it seemed that their gazes were focused on Iris’s pretty face. Or perhaps there were also homosexuals who liked Werner’s handsome face.
“Don’t leave my side, Iris.”
Iris also seemed to dislike the sticky gazes directed at her, so she tightly held onto the hem of my robe and followed me, just like a child holding onto her father’s clothes. When I recalled the setting, Werner had taken care of Iris when she was five years old, so he was like a father to her.
“Your father suddenly comes to mind.”
“What do you mean, suddenly?”
“He suddenly appeared and said, ‘Please take care of this child,’ and then left right away.”
“Really?”
That’s what I remembered from the setting. The protagonist of Dragnity Fantasy 1, who came to find Werner when he was 17 years old, was heavily criticized for leaving his five-year-old child with him.
Because of this, Werner was ridiculed for taking on a responsibility without any pleasure, so it was a setting that benefited neither of them.
As we walked while discussing this, we soon arrived at the pub where we had received the quest. Loud noises of fighting and arguing could be heard from outside the pub. When we quietly opened the door and entered, the place was in complete chaos.
It could be excused that half of the tables were broken and a chair was hanging from the ceiling as part of the interior or the pub’s concept.
However, the hooligans punching each other and the men engaging in indecent acts with women were not part of the interior. They were just thugs who made people frown. The fact that the pub owner couldn’t stand it anymore and posted a quest was enough to prove this.
“You do it, Iris. I’ll watch.”
After all, Iris was the one who had taken on this quest, so I let her handle it. Although Iris only spoke nonsense to me, she was usually timid, but she mustered up her courage and approached the man who was causing trouble.
Iris placed her hand on the man’s shoulder and said,
“Excuse me, could you please be a little quieter…”
“Oh… what is it…? Are you the new waitress who pours drinks? Come here, come here.”
That delinquent was drunk and out of his mind. He grabbed Iris’s wrist, who had come to stop him, and pulled her towards him.
Iris was also quite strong, so the fact that he was able to grab her wrist meant that he was a skilled fighter. Anyway, if something happened, I would be killed by Iris’s father.
“Master, this man keeps grabbing me and won’t let go!”
Reluctantly, I walked over to where they were, and the delinquent who had grabbed Iris looked me up and down.
“You seem to have some money, but I’ve already claimed this girl, so if you don’t want to see anything unpleasant, get lost.”
“Do you like the potatoes on that plate?”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
The delinquent let go of Iris’s arm and tried to punch me. Thanks to Werner’s innate dynamic vision, I saw his punch coming slowly, almost as if he was playing a prank.
I easily dodged the punch and slammed his head into the metal plate full of side dishes.
“You didn’t want to eat the side dishes, so I’m feeding them to you directly. Drinking on an empty stomach can upset your stomach.”
“You… you bastard…”
“Don’t you know? Spring potatoes are fucking delicious!”
I grabbed his hair again and slammed his head into the plate. Then I repeated this action, and soon the metal plate was covered in a thick red sauce.
The pub soon became quiet, and all eyes were on us. The gazes were filled with hostility rather than fear.
Some of them had already taken out their weapons, ready to kill us. It wasn’t particularly scary, but it was annoying to have to deal with them one by one while also keeping an eye on Iris.
Iris also had some skills, so she wouldn’t die, but if she got injured, I would.
“Grow, tree.”
I recited a simple spell, and tree roots grew from the ground, binding the delinquents who were staring at us.
It was a simple binding magic, so it wasn’t lethal, but it would be difficult to break free.
“I fucking hate repeating myself, so I’ll only say this once.”
“If you come back for revenge, or if you cause more trouble at this pub…”
“Next time we meet, I won’t be as gentle as I am now.”
Damn, I did what Iris was supposed to do.
I needed to teach her how to fight in real combat, so this was a problem. I had to teach her without getting injured, which seemed more difficult than fighting 100 dragons and winning.
“Master, you were so cool just now! Please teach me how to use that tree root magic!”
“It’s a useless skill, so give up.”
I was dying inside, but seeing her get excited and ramble on made me annoyed.
