Ch 06
The Winner of the Zerg Life
He Yi was feeling very anxious.
Last night, they had gone through a lot of trouble to catch a mutated bird-beast—belonging to the same species as the domesticated “chicken” back on Earth—so he had woken up early this morning with the intention of making a beggar’s chicken.
But he never expected that the soil on this planet would be so hard. He was actually defeated at the very first step: digging the pit.
While the pit was still not fully dug, his external mental power suddenly detected the presence of other life forms, drawing closer and closer.
An enemy attack? Aliens? A different beast?
In that moment, various speculations raced through his mind.
He Yi quickly dropped the small shovel in his hand and rushed into the house, forcibly waking the female who had been sleeping soundly under the influence of his mental power.
Judging from the continuous life-form signals being fed back through his mental power, it was clear that the approaching party could track their location in real-time. So, he abandoned the idea of running away and instead used his mental power to conceal their presence on the spot, while also creating a false appearance of a hasty escape inside the cabin to mislead the intruders.
When the group of military Zergs finally surrounded the small wooden house, they found it empty.
The military Zergs, who had come up empty-handed, checked their detectors again, confirming the coordinates displayed on the screen—this was definitely the place. But where were the Zergs?
Outside, He Yi sat boldly on a large rock with Zhao, but none of the military Zergs could see them.
As time ticked by, He Yi wiped the sweat from his brow, caused by the overuse of his mental power, and looked closely.
The newcomers were a group of well-trained soldiers, led by three officers, all dressed in sharp military uniforms, their faces a mixture of gentleness and solemnity. Wait a minute, why did these three look familiar?
Before he could think further, Zhao beside him suddenly jumped out of the mental power concealment range and smiled slightly, “Wai, Xi, Ze, you’ve come.”
The three leaders marched forward with the characteristic stride of military Zergs and saluted, “General Zhao.”
Zhao returned the salute.
What should have been a serious moment was made somewhat comical by General Zhao’s short stature.
General Wai stepped forward, curiously patting General Zhao’s fluffy head, unable to hold back a laugh, “What happened? How did you end up like this? I have to admit, you’re much more endearing in this form.”
Zhao dodged the hand messing with his head and frowned, scolding, “This is a reverse growth phase! I’ve told you to read more books, but you never listen. You’re so ignorant that you don’t even know the characteristics of a fourth-level evolution. The marshal should really send you to a mining star to dig black crystal stones!”
General Wai’s green eyes narrowed, “Fourth-level evolution? You really hit the jackpot this time.”
After the historic battlefield incident, the Zergs suffered massive losses, with all double S-class females who had undergone fourth-level evolution perishing in battle. The remaining few hundred male zergs exhausted their mental power to create a massive energy shield, protecting the Zerg star from the Auger tribe’s invasion, and soon after, they too gradually fell.
For thousands of years, naturally born S-class male zergs were incredibly rare, each one a treasure of the empire, and females who successfully completed a fourth-level evolution were even rarer.
Star Officer Xi gave a thumbs-up and cheerfully congratulated, “Congratulations, General! You’re the perfect example of a winner in life!” Not only had he broken through in rank, but he had also found an ideal male, making him the envy of all Zergs.
Adjutant Ze also smiled and congratulated him, “Congratulations, General.”
Oh, they were acquaintances after all.
Relieved, He Yi retracted the mental power invisibility shield from his body, jumped down from the large rock, and walked over to join them.
The three military Zergs immediately suppressed their smiles and solemnly performed a deep bow, “Good day, Your Excellency.”
“Please, there’s no need to be formal. I mean no harm.” He Yi, feeling puzzled by their tense demeanor, took a few steps back to ease the situation. “You all can talk, I’ll go prepare breakfast.”
As soon as he spoke, the Zergs reacted as if they were facing a great threat, looking even more anxious.
Zhao quickly intervened to diffuse the tension, “Master, we can eat on the battleship. There’s plenty of food onboard. Why don’t you rest here for a while? I’ll go gather our things.”
The military Zergs were stunned, their mouths agape, as they watched General Zhao, who was usually cold and distant towards male Zergs, speak so gently and warmly to the male zerg.
It seemed that even just a few days away could completely change someone.
Had the once aloof and indifferent General Zhao been eaten by a Dudu beast (a creature resembling a pig on Earth)?
On the battleship.
Feeling like a country bumpkin visiting a grand estate, He Yi took a quick tour of the ship, gaining a new appreciation for the advanced technology of Zerg Star. The military’s new model battleship, named the Voyager F-3, was essentially a fully enclosed, self-sustaining ecosystem, resembling a bustling city that could sustain itself indefinitely.
In the largest and most luxurious room on the ship, He Yi lay sprawled out, arms and legs stretched wide on a massive pure white velvet bed, staring blankly at the holographic projection of the cosmos and Milky Way on the ceiling.
He Yi: The feeling of sudden wealth comes so unexpectedly.
While He Yi was lost in the awe of the changing stars and galaxies above him, a conversation continued in the battleship’s meeting room.
“Where’s Lan? Why didn’t he come?” Zhao finally voiced the question that had been on his mind.
“Lieutenant General Lan was forcibly matched with His Highness Cape three star days ago, and he’s been in a tough spot ever since,” Star Officer Xi said with a tone of schadenfreude.
“Cape? The A-class male Zerg that Lan dumped half a year ago?” Zhao furrowed his brows as he recalled.
“Yes, the very one. He’s the chubby white male who cried his eyes out and threatened suicide at the military headquarters when Lan tried to break up with him,” Xi replied, winking.
“Rumor has it that after being rejected, this male Zerg was heartbroken and determined. He went home and nearly killed himself training with crystal stones, but he managed to break through to S-class. The first thing he did after that was apply to the main brain for a forced match with Lieutenant General Lan,” General Wai leisurely sipped from his cup of nutritional liquid as he spoke.
“Lieutenant General Lan really met his match this time,” sighed Adjutant Ze.
“Yes, after all these years of him outsmarting others, it seems he’s finally been outsmarted himself,” General Wai said, putting down his cup and focusing on the mark on Zhao’s forehead, “What’s that on your forehead?”
Hearing this, Zhao instinctively softened his gaze as he touched his forehead.
Adjutant Ze suddenly seemed to realize something, his expression changing dramatically. His eyes were filled with shock, joy, and disbelief, “General, is that… a mark?”
“Did His Excellency grant you a mark?!”
In his shrunken form, the crescent-shaped mark on Zhao’s forehead wasn’t very noticeable. Additionally, marking a female required the male to transfer a significant amount of energy, along with the female’s most important memories, into a light orb. This process was incredibly taxing and dangerous for the male’s mental power. In an era where male mental strength was generally declining, very few females received such a gift.
So, even though the Zergs had previously caught a glimpse of the mark on Zhao’s forehead, none of them considered that it might be a mark of bonding.
“Yes, it’s the same mark as Marshal Sen’s.” Zhao’s eyes sparkled, and a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
“Impressive!” General Wei praised.
“I must be foolish. I always knew you were invincible on the battlefield, General, but I had no idea your skills at charming Zergs were just as extraordinary,” Star Officer Xi teased with a serious tone.
General Zhao covered his mouth and cleared his throat, a hint of shyness flashing in his eyes as he smiled openly, “Nothing special, just average.”
“Third-best in the universe?” Adjutant Ze quipped.
He Yi woke up because of an urgent need to use the bathroom.
Due to the polluted water resources on the desolate planet, he usually only consumed the necessary amount of water for his body and didn’t drink a drop more. However, shortly after boarding the battleship, he had gulped down more than ten bottles of water. If it weren’t for the military Zergs nearby, who were watching him with gentle, adoring eyes as if he were a baby, he probably could have drunk a few more bottles.
He hunched over, slowly making his way off the massive bed, and searched around for a while, but couldn’t find any sign of a bathroom.
Without time to change out of his auto-adjusting, silk robe-like sleepwear, he begrudgingly embarked on the 800-meter journey from the bedside to the door.
Ah, this is the tragedy of suddenly becoming wealthy from being dirt poor!
Careless!
Finally, after breaking out in a light sweat, he opened the door. With his hands weakly resting on the doorframe, veins bulging, he forced a polite yet awkward smile at the two guards standing outside, “Hello, could you tell me where the bathroom is?”
Guard A shyly lowered his head, while the slightly bolder Guard B, blushing, said, “Your Excellency, you only need to say the words ‘use the bathroom’ anywhere in your room, and the space-folding hidden bathroom will automatically appear within a meter of you.”
He Yi understood.
His forced smile gradually faded, and through gritted teeth, he managed to say, “Alright, thank you.”
Then, in a flash, he slammed the door shut…
After experiencing the advanced technology of the Zerg star’s bathroom and settling back onto the soft, bouncy bed that spanned several meters, He Yi suddenly felt that sudden wealth wasn’t as sweet as he’d imagined.
Without the corresponding knowledge, living in this highly advanced interstellar era was incredibly challenging. What was common sense to the ordinary residents was something he couldn’t figure out no matter how hard he tried.
Sigh, poverty limits so much.
As He Yi found himself repeatedly wavering between embarrassment and extreme embarrassment, his stomach began to growl.
Just then, the doorbell rang, accompanied by the voice of a female Zerg, “Your Excellency, are you hungry? I’ve brought food. May I come in?”
Oh, you ask why he could hear so clearly from 800 meters away?
Don’t ask why. Just know that there’s a 360-degree surround sound system installed at the head of the bed, and it’s super loud!
He Yi resigned himself to his fate, sitting up and clumsily operating the virtual interface floating in mid-air by the bedside. After lowering the volume, he clicked the voice recording button and said, “Come in.”
Nothing is more important than eating.
Three seconds later, He Yi’s eyes widened in shock as he stared at the female Zerg now standing right by his bedside. “How did you get here so fast?!”
One second to open the door.
One second to close the door.
And somehow, in the remaining second, he had moved from the door to his bedside?
Even the highest-ranked speed ability users in the apocalypse couldn’t move this quickly!
Zhao skillfully activated the dining mode on the bed and took out dish after dish of delicious food from the space button on the left index finger. He neatly arranged them on a delicately crafted, stylish dining table.
“Master, there’s a direct access mode at the door. You just need to confirm it on the projection interface of the entry screen. The direct access mode allows you to set a destination, and the initial default destination is the bedside.”
He Yi licked his lips, staring at the delicious food in front of him, and awkwardly said, “Oh, I see. That’s pretty good.”
It turns out that I, in my youth, didn’t understand—sudden wealth is truly sweet.
