I accidentally Married the Leader of the Noble Path

Chapter 16 - Courting death

“What responsibility?” Qin Nan continued sitting calmly, showing no intention of standing up.

To the onlookers, Qin Nan’s nonchalant demeanor seemed like he was courting death.

What they didn’t realize was that the real fools courting death were these thugs.

Many of the spectators were locals of Yangshun City and were well aware of these thugs’ misdeeds. They often bullied merchants, committed petty crimes, and had a terrible reputation. Yet, no one could do anything about them.

When faced with them, the best course was to steer clear and avoid trouble.

“Funeral expenses, living costs for the widow and orphan, and emotional damages for our brotherhood. Ten gold coins will do.”

“You’re extorting me, aren’t you? If you think I’m an easy target, I’d advise you to go back to where you came from.”

“Heh, kid, your mouth is bold. If you won’t pay after causing a death, we’ll have to take matters into our own hands.”

“Kehehe, judging by your appearance, you don’t look like you could afford to pay up anyway. If that’s the case, one life for another,” the scar-faced thug sneered, his gaze shifting to Shangguan Rouyue behind Qin Nan. His eyes suddenly turned lecherous.

The thugs around him all had similarly lascivious expressions.

Qin Nan immediately understood why trouble had found its way to him—it was because his wife was too beautiful, tempting others to commit crimes.

His gaze turned icy. These thugs dared to have designs on his wife? They were looking for death.

Before Qin Nan could react, Shangguan Rouyue, her face frosty, stepped forward.

“Kneel, confess, and leave. Otherwise, die. Your choice,” Shangguan Rouyue said.

“Haha! Beauty, your words are even bolder than this brat’s! Do you think you can dismiss us just like that? But—”

Before the scar-faced thug could finish, Shangguan Rouyue lightly waved her hand. An invisible blade of air sliced through, and the thug’s head separated cleanly from his body.

Thud.

The head hit the ground.

The crowd was stunned. When they looked at Shangguan Rouyue again, their eyes were filled with fear.

They had seen ruthless people before, but never someone this merciless—killing without a second thought.

“You killed our boss! You’re dead!” another thug shouted, pulling out a dagger and charging forward.

Shangguan Rouyue waved her hand again. The man collapsed instantly, lifeless, joining his comrade on the ground.

The remaining three thugs were paralyzed with fear. They finally understood they had provoked someone they shouldn’t have—a cultivator, and a powerful one at that.

Realizing they had hit an iron wall, the three turned and fled.

But they didn’t make it far. One after another, their heads separated from their bodies, and they fell to the ground, lifeless.

In the blink of an eye, the five thugs who had come to extort money were all dead, shocking the crowd.

Shangguan Rouyue returned to stand calmly behind Qin Nan, as if nothing had happened.

Noticing two of the corpses near the stall were affecting business, she casually waved her hand again. A gust of invisible wind pushed the bodies across the street, even cleaning the bloodstains off the ground.

The stall was now clean and presentable again, ready for business.

Strangely, however, no customers approached for a while. They all kept a respectful distance, clearly frightened.

“Wifey, you were too ruthless. Killing five people in a row scared everyone off,” Qin Nan remarked.

“Ruthless? If I had spared these scum, they would have continued to harm others. Killing them here is doing a public service,” Shangguan Rouyue replied matter-of-factly.

Her tone and actions revealed her as someone who detested evil and acted decisively against it.

Seeing Qin Nan staring blankly at her, seemingly at a loss for words, Shangguan Rouyue thought he might be frightened by her actions.

Her husbby was, after all, just a simple villager. Though he had learned alchemy and healing through a fortuitous opportunity and was now cultivating under her guidance, at heart, he remained a villager.

He wasn’t used to killing and bloodshed, so being scared was understandable.

Shangguan Rouyue silently reproached herself for neglecting his feelings and felt a twinge of guilt.

“Don’t worry, wifey. I’m not scared. If anything, I should thank you for resolving the trouble,” Qin Nan said.

“No need to thank me. Helping you is my duty,” Shangguan Rouyue replied.

The two exchanged smiles, and the matter was laid to rest.

At that moment, a group of ten or so soldiers hurried over.

Someone had clearly reported the killings—five lives had been taken, after all.

“Who killed these people?” the lead officer asked.

All eyes turned to Shangguan Rouyue and Qin Nan.

The section of the street around their stall was conspicuously empty, with no one daring to come near. It wasn’t hard to figure out the culprits.

“Was it you two?” the officer asked.

“Yes. Any problems with that?” Shangguan Rouyue replied coldly.

Her question left the officer momentarily speechless.

Someone had openly admitted to murder and wasn’t even afraid of the consequences.

Did she not fear being sentenced to death?

The officer examined the bodies again. Each had been cleanly decapitated without other injuries—instant kills with no chance to resist.

This clearly indicated that the killer was immensely powerful.

The officer looked Shangguan Rouyue up and down again. Her extraordinary beauty and aura marked her as anything but ordinary—definitely a cultivator.

Not someone to cross.

If they dared to arrest her, it was likely that their dozen or so soldiers would end up like those thugs.

The deceased were all low-life thugs; there was no need to cause trouble for the cultivator over such people.

“No problem. Thank you, madam, for eliminating evil and protecting the people.”

“If there’s nothing else, you may leave. Don’t get in the way of my husband’s business,” Shangguan Rouyue replied.

“Husband?” The officer glanced at Qin Nan, realizing the young man was her spouse.

He was surprised but wisely said nothing further.

After a quick order, the soldiers gathered the bodies and left. Whether the killings warranted further investigation was a matter for higher authorities to decide.

Typically, when cultivators killed criminals, local officials turned a blind eye to avoid trouble.

After all, cultivators were not to be trifled with. Punishing them could easily provoke the forces behind them, and that would cause serious trouble.

Most of the onlookers had already dispersed, and the street returned to its normal order, no longer crowded.

Soon, customers began approaching the stall again.

The earlier incident had inadvertently served as advertising. With Shangguan Rouyue’s display of strength, many assumed Qin Nan wasn’t ordinary either.

By extension, could the medicine Qin Nan was selling be anything ordinary?

Some people said Qin Nan was a prominent figure from a nearby large city who came to Yangshun City to sell medicine just to show off.

Many people believed this claim.

Additionally, repeat customers who had bought Qin Nan’s medicine all said it was highly effective.

Soon, the stall was bustling with customers, all eager to buy the medicine, even starting bidding wars.

Though it was busy, everyone kept their manners and didn’t dare to act recklessly.

This was necessary—Can’t you  see how Shangguan Rouyue stood there, her cold gaze scanning the crowd? Who would dare act out when under her watch? They’d be asking for death.

In less than half an hour, all the medicine had sold out, whether for injuries or specialized livestock aphrodisiacs. Not a single bottle was left.

The remaining medicines were sold at high prices due to the competition, with the most expensive one going for two gold coins.
