Chapter 400: Chapter 399: Artificial Mana Web
Murphy visited the Magic Research Institute, where research on magic metals had begun earlier than the Void Particle Research Institute in Sukhoi. They had already realized that magic could affect the properties of various materials, including semiconductors.
But before he could find Denzel Evans, the expert on magic semiconductors, he saw Holden and others fiddling with a huge device. It was as big as a basketball court, almost filling the largest laboratory of the Spell Pathway Research Group.
Near the gigantic device hung a construction plan, which Murphy couldn't help but stop to examine for a while.
"Director!" Holden noticed Murphy and hurried over.
"This is the Hive?" Murphy glanced at the construction plan, which showed a three-dimensional structure made of countless hexagonal cells, and asked.
"Exactly," Holden appeared very excited. "However, what we're building now is just a partial test structure. It's mainly used to verify whether the Department of Mysteries is a 'mana web' node and to complete experiments on extracting mana as a stable energy source."
After visiting the Department of Mysteries, Murphy realized it might be part of the "mana web." After preliminary theoretical calculations, Holden and others found Murphy was probably right, suggesting a high probability that the Department of Mysteries was an important node of the mana web.
To validate this hypothesis and explore the possibility of extracting mana from the mana web as a stable energy source, they initiated the "Artificial Mana Web" project under Murphy's authorization.
The Hive was the first step of the Artificial Mana Web project.
"We, along with Jim Best's team, investigated the magical energy room underneath the Danish Ministry of Magic and asked Arkaim's shamans to show us the Holy City's mana hub. Like the Department of Mysteries in the British Ministry of Magic, they share many similar properties. We're almost certain they're of the same kind."
"We found that unique magical markers we added to the mana flow passing through the Department of Mysteries also appeared in the Holy City's mana hub and the Danish energy room, indicating the mana nodes in these three places are connected."
"We speculate that these mana flows, along with the Departments of Mysteries in various countries acting as pivot nodes, together form a vast mana web covering the entire world."
Although this conjecture hasn't been fully verified yet, Holden was already excited. He had proposed the mana web hypothesis years ago when he first encountered magic, thinking it would take decades to prove, but he hadn't expected that day to come so soon.
"The architectural structure of the Department of Mysteries is clearly a magical ritual, with each room retaining a special and extreme magical energy, isolated from each other yet somehow connected, forming a strong mana resonance."
"Jim Best and I agree that this resonance is the key to connecting the various mana nodes."
"The Hive mimics the structure of the Department of Mysteries. If our guess is correct, it will also resonate with it, becoming a mana tributary."
Murphy nodded, looking at the construction plan, where each hexagonal cell was marked with symbols like hearts, skulls, crystal balls, representing love, death, prophecy, and other energies.
But there were also symbols Murphy hadn't seen before. He pointed to an icon that looked like a figure from "The Scream" and asked, "What's this?"
"Ah, that's the source of fear," Holden explained. "Once, in an experiment, we enclosed a Dementor in a sphere filled with Patronus energy and kept compressing the sphere to see if the Dementor would die. Surprisingly, it could be compressed into a mass of unconscious pure energy, and this energy, with a strong mental polarity, is a very pure form of fear magic."
"This fear magic is almost infinite. As long as the extraction does not exceed the limit, it can self-replenish like a magic stone. We believe this might be one of the reasons for the Dementors' immortality."
"Polarized magical energy and essence have many similarities. In fact, we once tried to compress a large number of Dementors to artificially create essence, but the magical power produced by a single Dementor is too small, far less than a magic stone, making it not very valuable as an energy source. However, it's sufficient as one of the extreme energies for the Hive."
"Oh, the Dementor compression experiment." Murphy remembered seeing this in the weekly research papers submitted by the Magic Research Institute.
It had to be said that these scientists were truly ingenious, turning Dementors, of all things, into batteries...
However, Holden's mention of the similarities between polarized magical energy and essence caught Murphy's attention. There might be some connection, yet there were also differences.
Each type of polarized magical energy, such as love, death, etc., has a very singular magical property, while essence is different, its magical properties are like a hexagonal warrior, reaching high frequencies in all dimensions.
But the mana flow brought by the resonance of various polarized magical energies also has a multidimensional nature similar to essence. Now that mining on the moon seems unlikely, using it as an alternative energy source to magic stones is most suitable.
"How long until the Hive is fully built?" Murphy asked.
"Don't worry, Director, the main structure is almost complete. What's left is the arrangement and installation of the mana conductors. We can complete the validation experiment within a month."
Murphy nodded, encouragingly said, "Keep it up. Whether we can truly enter the era of magical energy might depend on this experiment."
...
Leaving the Spell Pathway Research Group, Murphy found Denzel Evans.
To his surprise, Evans had locked himself in a laboratory. According to his assistant, he had been living there for half a month, eating meals delivered directly by a house-elf.
"The group leader is under a lot of pressure. He's almost obsessed with his research on magical silicon properties," an assistant said. "At this rate, I'm afraid he might die in the lab."
Murphy frowned and teleported into the laboratory.
A skinny, short researcher with a bird's nest of hair was testing material properties at the experiment table.
"No good!" He looked at the data on the testing device, his face showing neurotic frustration. "Magic flux can affect the magical resistance of materials, but the resistance doesn't self-recover. This material can't be used as a semiconductor!"
Murphy stood behind Denzel and glanced at the screen's data, feeling it looked familiar.
"What material is this? Magical silicon?" Murphy asked.
"No, magical silicon carbide. Silicon alone won't work. Silicon has a diamond lattice with two inequivalent atoms in the lattice, which hinders the flow of magic. Silicon carbide has better conductivity."
Denzel, seemingly unaware of the person behind him, mumbled, "But it's still not enough. Its magical resistance changes aren't linear. It seems to undergo a second magical transformation due to the flow of magic, changing its properties..."
Murphy looked at the graph, suddenly having a realization. This material indeed wasn't suitable for semiconductors.
But who said a magic chip must be made from semiconductors?
"Denzel, you're trapped by semiconductor thinking," Murphy suddenly said. "Magic resistance varies with magic flux and can maintain resistance without self-recovering. This means the material itself can store historical information."
"Have you ever heard of artificial neural networks and memristors?"
