Chapter 401: Chapter 400: Towards the Future
Memristors, fully known as memory resistors, are circuit components that can represent the relationship between magnetic flux and charge.
Unlike regular resistors, whose resistance is determined by the charge that flows through them, a memristor's resistance can be changed by the current that last passed through it. By measuring the resistance of a memristor, one can determine the amount of charge that has flowed through it, thus enabling it to "remember" charge.
Due to this characteristic, which closely resembles the plasticity effect of neuronal synapses, memristors are among the most effective means of simulating artificial neural networks.
The magical silicon carbide material discovered by Denzel Evans can be considered a kind of magic memristor. It is not a magic semiconductor, so it cannot be used to make ordinary classical computer chips, but it is extremely suitable for magic neural network chips.
Neural network chips, naturally suitable for machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms, are in fact more appropriate for the Internet of Things than ordinary classical chips, enabling "objects" to have "intelligence."
This was tailor-made for Murphy's "Magic Internet of Things" plan.
At this point in time, memristors were still a theoretical concept, twelve years away from when the first memristor component was manufactured by Hewlett-Packard in 2008.
With electronic memristors yet to appear in the world, and Denzel Evans lacking Murphy's future insights and unaware of the potential of artificial intelligence and neural networks, he hadn't thought in this direction.
Murphy didn't explain too much but immediately formed a project team, gathering experts in artificial neural networks and extracting a vast amount of future-related data on memristors and artificial neural networks from his memory.
This area, being somewhat related to his expertise, had been of significant interest to him, so the data was much more detailed. Essentially, just this information could save them more than twenty years of research, bringing them close to the research progress before Murphy's time travel.
"Currently, various applications of magic technology are flourishing, bringing tremendous changes to the world, something you all have experienced through projects like the moon landing," Murphy addressed everyone at the project team's inauguration.
"But to apply magic technology more broadly across fields, inheriting our centuries of technological research achievements, we still have two important problems to solve."
"First is the issue of magic energy. Several cutting-edge projects, including the Artificial Mana Web, aim to resolve this."
"The second equally important issue is magic chip technology. The progress of modern technology can basically be seen as the advancement of precision technology. Our limits in processing and production depend on our precision manufacturing capabilities. To grant magic technology the same precision, we must create chips that can operate on magic energy."
"This project team is for researching artificial neural network chips based on magic memristors. I have previously sent advanced research materials on memristors and artificial neural networks to everyone. You need to first validate and familiarize yourselves with these materials and then, based on them, further develop commercializable magic chips."
"Normally, for such profound and cutting-edge research, we should proceed gradually. Unfortunately, we don't have much time."
"Deities are invading our world."
"And the weapons to defeat them may well be in your hands."
"To accelerate research progress, from now on, every lab can apply to use a time accelerator to speed up time for themselves or a certain area," Murphy said. "Of course, to avoid indirectly shortening your lives through this method, we will offer life extension magic for free."
"We have two life extension methods: one is becoming a vampire, and the other combines anti-aging potions with the Elixir of Life, both methods can extend your lives by more than a thousand years."
"However, regardless of the method, the time you invest in research is real. The tedious process of research, the frustrations and sufferings experienced during it, and the aging and trauma these years impose on your minds, just like the time for you, are undeniable realities."
"For this, we can hardly help."
"Therefore, this is a way to research the future. While I express the highest respect for the brave choices you might make, I also hope everyone will carefully, seriously, and responsibly consider whether to use such methods."
However, as soon as Murphy finished speaking, a researcher raised their hand, "How will the salary be calculated?"
"Of course, it will be based on the actual working time," Murphy said.
"Then there's nothing more to say. I apply to use time acceleration!" the researcher said. "Since I've chosen this path, I'm mentally prepared for boredom, tedium, frustration, and suffering. Being able to publish papers and achieve results hundreds of times faster by paying some emotional price, if my peers knew, they'd be envious to death!"
"I heard the highest rate of time acceleration is a hundredfold? Things that might take others a year to achieve, I only need three days! With such a good deal, why hesitate?!"
"I heard becoming a vampire means you can't sleep but can keep a youthful appearance forever, is that true?" a female researcher raised her hand to ask, "I mean, will it make me ugly?"
"Not precisely, but indeed some experimental results show that vampires only show signs of aging at the end of their lifespan. As for sleeping issues, our vampire treatment potion is about to be produced, which should quickly resolve those negative effects."
"Then I have no problem. I'll also apply for time acceleration."
"Can the rate of time acceleration be increased further?" another researcher asked.
"It's possible in the future," Murphy answered. "But even if higher rates of time acceleration become available, I wouldn't recommend using them. There are too many uncertainties."
"How exactly do we operate to accelerate time in an area? Is there any danger?" someone else asked.
"We will cover the entire laboratory or research institute with magic metal wires, then use the time accelerator on it. To ensure the needs of everyone in the building are met, it will be equipped with various facilities and supplies while maintaining constant contact with the outside world. The accelerated state can be stopped at any time. We've considered all possibilities; this method of acceleration is safe."
"Of course, the larger the accelerated area and the more materials involved, the higher the acceleration rate, the greater the magical energy consumption. Therefore, currently, we can only accelerate about 30,000 cubic meters of facilities by a hundredfold."
"Then, I propose the Magic Chip Project Team collectively accelerates," Denzel Evans said. "This way, we can keep our research progress aligned. After all, this is the most cutting-edge research, and external communication is almost irrelevant."
