Genshin Impact: I'm just a mortal

Chapter 222: Chapter 221: Kokomi's Secret Base

"Yuxie, thank you. I think I know what to do now." After a moment, Kokomi revealed a captivating smile.

"Good, that's great to hear." Yuxie responded with a smile of his own.

"If you don't mind, could you accompany me for a walk around Watatsumi Island?" Kokomi suddenly suggested.

The invitation came unexpectedly. Yuxie hadn't considered this possibility, but since Kokomi brought it up and he had the time, there was no reason to refuse.

"Sure, let's take a walk. It'll help you relax and, at the very least, ease the furrow in your brow."

Thus, the two left Sangonomiya Shrine and began strolling along the around Watatsumi Island.

The scenery of Watatsumi Island was as beautiful as ever. The air was filled with ethereal, dreamlike "jellyfish" and "fish" that emitted a soft blue glow.

The sound of flowing water reached their ears, as if it could wash away the troubles lingering in their minds.

Yuxie and Kokomi walked side by side, exchanging few words.

The atmosphere was somewhat delicate, as truth be told, the two were not yet very familiar with each other.

The wind blew gently against them, lifting Kokomi's pink hair and the hem of her robe. Speaking of which, Kokomi's figure wasn't as striking as Makoto, Ei, or Shenhe's, but her aura had an otherworldly grace.

"It's been a long time since I've taken a walk like this," Kokomi suddenly said. "Strolling like this does help me relax quite a bit. Thank you for accompanying me."

"Thank me? It's my honor to take a walk with the Divine Priestess of Watatsumi Island," Yuxie replied with a smile.

"Commander Yu, you're joking. It's my honor to take a walk with you," Kokomi said with a radiant smile. The tension in her brows had eased considerably, as if she had forgotten the worries from earlier.

A few crabs scuttled across the beach, startled by Yuxie and Kokomi's approach. They quickly scrambled away, leaving a trail of tiny footprints in the sand.

Seabirds flew overhead, soaring with the wind.

The scene was peaceful and harmonious, devoid of any trace of war.

"Actually, no one knows this, but my dream used to be to become a strategist working behind the scenes," Kokomi said. "That way, I wouldn't have to appear before others."

"You don't like appearing in front of others?" Yuxie asked.

"I think... talking with people is an extremely draining activity. In the past, I would unconsciously tremble during every speech, and I'd sometimes feel the urge to retreat in the face of heavy responsibilities. So, if I could, I'd prefer to work behind the scenes," Kokomi said with a faint, bitter smile. However, her gaze was firm as she continued, "But since I've become Watatsumi Island's 'Divine Priestess,' I must shoulder this responsibility."

"Then... does talking with me also make you feel drained?" Yuxie couldn't help but ask.

The question made Kokomi hesitate for a moment. She turned her head and looked at Yuxie with her clear, bright eyes, blinking thoughtfully.

"Strangely enough, when I talk with you, I don't feel drained at all. On the contrary..." Kokomi trailed off, stopping herself mid-sentence. In her heart, she quietly added the unspoken words: On the contrary, I feel energized.

"Isn't that just a polite response? I don't think I could possibly be that special exception," Yuxie remarked.

"Of course not! I genuinely feel that way!" Kokomi shook her head firmly.

Yuxie paused for a moment before smiling and saying, "I'm honored."

Kokomi looked at Yuxie, feeling a slight, inexplicable tremor in her heart as his smile lingered.

Although she had grown up on Watatsumi Island, she had heard of the legendary deeds of this extraordinary commander.

A mortal who saved a God, led armies to victory in the Khaenri'ah War, and accomplished countless other remarkable feats...

Kokomi herself might not have realized it, but Yuxie's deeds had planted a small seed in her heart—a belief that mortals could also protect the land beneath their feet, that mortals didn't necessarily have to rely on the power of gods.

To protect what one wished to protect with one's own strength—this closely aligned with the duties of the Divine Priestess.

Deep down, Kokomi had always held great respect for Yuxie.

"Huh? What's that over there…" Yuxie, noticing Kokomi's silence, tried to change the subject. He pointed to a small cave below in the distance.

Following Yuxie's gaze, Kokomi also spotted the cave, and a faint sense of surprise rose in her heart.

Before they knew it, they had unwittingly walked all the way here.

"That's... my secret base," Kokomi said softly, her tone carrying a hint of embarrassment.

"Secret base?" Yuxie repeated, then suddenly realized.

Oh, that's right—Kokomi did have a secret base.

"Do you... want to take a look?" Kokomi asked after a brief pause.

"Is that okay?"

"Follow me," Kokomi said with a smile.

With Kokomi leading the way, the two soon arrived at the cave entrance.

Peering inside, the full interior wasn't visible, but it was clear that there were some tables, chairs, and bookshelves within.

"Let's go," Kokomi said as she stepped forward, entering the cave first.

Following Kokomi inside, the interior of the space came into view.

The cave wasn't very deep, but it offered a surprisingly spacious area.

The most prominent items inside were military strategy books, neatly arranged on shelves. On a desk sat some tea utensils and a book that didn't appear to be about military strategy.

Overall, the cave was tidy, clean, and tranquil—a perfect place for solitude.

"When I feel a lot of pressure or have too many worries, I come here to calm myself," Kokomi said. "Every time I visit, I feel much more relaxed."

"This is a great spot. Makes me want to set up a secret base of my own," Yuxie remarked as he glanced around the cave.

Hearing the phrase "secret base," Kokomi seemed a bit embarrassed. She walked over to the table and picked up a teapot. "Um... I'll go fetch some water to make tea."

With that, Kokomi temporarily left the cave, leaving Yuxie alone.

Yuxie's gaze wandered as he took in his surroundings. He approached the bookshelf, pulled out a military strategy book, and began flipping through it.

Unfortunately, having never studied such texts before, he couldn't make much sense of what he read. After skimming a few pages, he returned the book to its place on the shelf.

Next, he moved to the desk, where his attention was drawn to the book sitting on it.

It looked more like a notebook than a military tome.

Curiosity sparked—he wondered what Kokomi might have written inside. However, respecting her privacy, he knew he couldn't open it without her permission.

Just then, a breeze blew through the cave, and the notebook's pages fluttered open...
