Chapter 221: Chapter 220: The Reason
Rosalyne felt her consciousness drifting through an unknown space for what seemed like a long time, like a dream or an illusion.
In this dream, or rather, this illusion, she saw many things.
She saw her former self, the innocent and carefree Rosalyne singing for Yu Xie by the fountain, with Yu Xie standing not far off, smiling and watching her. Her heart was filled with warmth, like the sunlight of spring shining deep within.
She also saw the time she spent with Yu Xie, sitting together by Starfall Cliff, where the night sky was dotted with brilliant stars, and it felt as though she could reach up and pluck a star from the sky.
She then saw herself wearing a wedding dress, standing alongside Yu Xie, making vows to be together for a lifetime.
Everything was so happy, so beautiful.
But in the end, she saw the overwhelming flames engulfing everything, taking Yu Xie away from her and burning everything she once had to the ground.
In the span of a single night, she became a homeless person, with nothing left to her name.
The flames within her blood began to burn, and her gaze was no longer innocent and carefree.
She swore to use her own strength to burn away all the evil in the world, but unknowingly, she had become arrogant and proud, making many mistakes.
Until, in the end, she saw herself and Yu Xie reunited once more beneath the beautiful scenery of Dihua Marsh.
It seems like destiny, yet it also feels like fate is playing tricks.
She didn't know how much time had passed, but slowly, Rosalyne opened her eyes.
What greeted her was a strange ceiling and an unfamiliar room.
The room was exquisitely decorated, and it was very quiet, with no one else inside except for her.
Rosalyne sat up and noticed a tear falling from the corner of her eye.
She wiped the tear away and looked around.
She was puzzled.
She had thought that her plan had failed and that she was already dead, but now she could still feel that she was alive, perfectly alive.
At that moment, the door to the room opened.
Yu Xie walked in, holding a bowl of porridge.
"You're awake. Kitsune Saiguu said you'd probably wake up around this time, so I went ahead and made some porridge for you," Yu Xie said.
"Yu Xie, what exactly is going on here?" Rosalyne looked at him, still struggling to make sense of the situation.
"The Raiden Shogun you met yesterday—that was me in disguise," Yu Xie explained.
Hearing his words, Rosalyne froze for a moment before falling into silence.
No wonder she had sensed a faint trace of familiarity at the time. So that's how it was…
Suddenly enlightened, she felt a torrent of words stuck in her throat—things she wanted to say but couldn't find the right way to express.
"The Fair Lady is dead. Now, there is only Rosalyne," Yu Xie said with a gentle smile.
"..." Rosalyne froze for a moment, then smiled softly. Yet a tear escaped the corner of her eye. She quickly wiped it away and said, "Yes."
Indeed, the Fair Lady was dead. The Rosalyne of the past might never return, but now, she only needed to live as Rosalyne.
.....
Nightfall.
Yu Xie arrived at the grand hall of Tenshukaku.
Makoto and Ei were waiting for him inside.
"What's going on? You called me over in such a hurry—did something happen?" Yu Xie asked.
Makoto turned to face him, her expression rather complicated. "There's been a bit of an issue with our peace talks with Watatsumi Island. It seems there's growing opposition to the negotiations on their side."
Hearing this, Yu Xie fell silent for a moment.
He could barely recall the original course of events, but he remembered that it ultimately ended in peace.
However, the current development...
"Orobashi was slain by Ei," Makoto said slowly. "To many on Watatsumi Island, that might be something they can never let go of, even if Orobashi was the one to start the invasion."
"Makoto, was the situation back then really as simple as it seemed?" Yu Xie asked, sensing something unusual in her tone.
"...Actually, before the invasion, Orobashi came to see me, disguised as an ordinary person," Makoto said. "He told me he had seen something he should never have seen, and that his fate was already sealed. Unable to continue protecting the people of Watatsumi Island, and not wanting to drag us into his troubles, he decided to sacrifice himself to pave the way for his people to integrate into Inazuma."
The explanation was different from what Yu Xie had imagined. This wasn't the first time he had encountered deviations in the course of events, but it still left him sighing in regret.
A god like Orobashi, who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his people, had his fate irrevocably sealed simply because he saw something forbidden. In the end, death was his only choice...
"At that moment, when I struck Orobashi down, I saw nothing but relief and trust in his eyes," Ei said, breaking the silence.
She paused, her voice carrying a rare trace of sorrow. "These things… we cannot explain to Watatsumi Island. We have no evidence, and it would only sound like a story fabricated to win their trust."
"What if the person with the highest credibility on Watatsumi Island were to explain this to their people?" Yu Xie suggested.
"You mean…" Makoto looked at Yu Xie, her words trailing off as though hesitant to continue.
"I'll go to Watatsumi Island tomorrow," Yu Xie said firmly.
....
The next day.
Yu Xie traveled alone to Watatsumi Island.
Walking along the path, he passed through Bourou Village and finally arrived outside the Sangonomiya Shrine.
This time, the atmosphere here felt noticeably different from before.
A shrine maiden from Sangonomiya escorted Yu Xie to the door of Kokomi's study.
Inside, Kokomi was engrossed in reading military strategy. Her adorable and beautiful face bore a complex expression, with a hint of worry furrowing her brows.
"Sangonomiya-sama, Mr. Yu Xie has come to visit."
Hearing the voice from outside the door, Kokomi's expression eased slightly. She set the book down and said:
"Let him in."
The door opened, and Yu Xie stepped inside.
"It's been a while, Miss Kokomi. It seems you've had many things troubling you," Yu Xie said gently.
Kokomi sighed softly. "You've probably heard by now—there are many voices on Watatsumi Island opposing the peace talks. These voices argue that since Raiden Shogun killed Lord Orobashi, we absolutely cannot proceed with negotiations."
"What do you think?" Yu Xie asked in a low voice.
"At that time, Lord Orobashi led the campaign eastward, and Raiden Shogun led the forces to repel them, resulting in Lord Orobashi's death. But what's strange is this: logically, Raiden Shogun should have launched an invasion of Watatsumi Island to prevent any retaliation. Yet, she didn't. This suggests there might be hidden truths about this matter that Watatsumi Island is unaware of," Kokomi reasoned.
"The truth is, it's much as you suspected. Orobashi used his death to give Watatsumi Island a chance to integrate into Inazuma," Yu Xie said, calmly recounting the events from the previous day.
"So that's how it is…" Kokomi murmured. Even though she had prepared herself mentally and had her suspicions, hearing the full story from Yu Xie still left her both moved and surprised.
Her beautiful face reflected a complex array of emotions. Her usually clear, bright eyes seemed clouded with a layer of mist, making her appear both sorrowful and endearing.
