Game Of Thrones : Merchant of Two Worlds

Chapter 75: 75. Recruit Soldiers

Three businessmen from a free city-state couldn't hide their excitement as they directed nearly a hundred of their workers to load goods into the carriage convoy outside. The line of carriages stretched for hundreds of meters.

As Jason Liu watched these men and their hundreds of workers bustling in and out of his store, he felt a twitch of anxiety. He worried they might rob him right then and there. Fortunately, this was Winterfell, the northern capital of Westeros, and these merchants wouldn't dare cause trouble here.

However, this experience made Jason realize how weak his own security was to protect himself and his business. He was thankful that the Stark family was known for their integrity; they wouldn't steal from him just because he was making money. If he were in the territories of other lords, he might have been robbed already.

Westerosi nobles had little regard for the law, living in a feudal system where they held all the power. Secretly, Jason celebrated that the Stark family were genuinely good people.

While he was lost in thought, he decided he needed to strengthen his security as soon as possible by recruiting soldiers—starting with 100 men. Jason felt increasingly insecure, knowing he had more than 5,000 golden dragons in his possession. He feared that other greedy forces might be eyeing him as an easy target.

With urgency, Jason's earlier excitement about his business began to fade. He needed to act quickly and look for young men from farming families who had good character. Such recruits would be easier to manage, more obedient, and adaptable.

Even though Jon Snow might not know how to train 100 men, Jason was determined to take on this task himself. He remembered some basics of military training from college, like marching in unison and formation.

He wanted to focus on teamwork rather than individual combat skills. In the world of Game of Thrones, the only army known for its teamwork and strict discipline was the Unsullied, trained by slave masters in Astapor. These boys were subjected to harsh training, resulting in a high mortality rate. Even once they became Unsullied, they were more like emotionless killing machines than human beings.

Though it was a grim thought, Jason imagined how effective his soldiers could be if he could acquire 100 Unsullied and train his men with their strict discipline. But, he quickly dismissed this idea.

Westeros forbids slave trading, especially in the Stark family's territory. The honorable Lord Eddard Stark would never allow anyone to violate the kingdom's laws. He had seen how Lord Eddard had wanted to punish Jorah Mormont, who had dealt in slaves to support his wife, forcing him to flee Westeros out of fear.

Jorah lived as a mercenary across the Narrow Sea, leading a dangerous life, which ultimately led his wife to leave him for a wealthy businessman. If only Jorah had known better, he wouldn't have compromised his values to win over his extravagant wife.

As for Sir Jorah's father, Commander Jeor Mormont, he had hoped his son would inherit the title of Earl of Bear Island. Instead, Jorah chose a life of Night's Watch. It must have pained Jeor to see his son lose the title because of a woman.

If Jason dared to buy Unsullied and bring them to the North, he knew Eddard would arrest him and execute him with his ancestral Valyrian steel sword, "Ice."

So, even though he craved the discipline and effectiveness of the Unsullied, Jason realized he couldn't risk it. Ultimately, he would have to manage on his own, which felt frustrating.

Was it that the beautiful maid Lena wasn't providing good service, or was she just making life difficult for him?

The next morning, Lord Jason East made a shocking announcement: he would recruit 100 soldiers!

This bold move stunned Jon, who had come to train ten men, including the McCann brothers. Why was Lord Jason suddenly recruiting so many soldiers?

However, no one dared question Jason Liu's decision. In fact, the news spread quickly among the workers at the construction site and nearby villages, creating excitement.

McCann, the three Barlow brothers, and other guards of Lord Jason received food, housing, and high wages of six silver deer each month, causing jealousy among the villagers.

The announcement of recruiting 100 soldiers created a buzz in the villages within a hundred miles of Winterfell. Many villagers brought their sons to apply, leading to a flood of people into the winter market town by afternoon, causing chaos and commotion.

Even Winterfell, over a thousand meters away, felt the impact and quickly closed its gates, alerting the castle to the situation, thinking they are under attack.

Jason Liu realized the problem after Jon reminded him. Concerned about Eddard Stark's potential displeasure, he asked Jon to head to Winterfell and clarify the misunderstanding to avoid escalating the situation.

Fortunately, Winterfell had hundreds of elite soldiers who were not worried about the unarmed farmers. After Jon explained the situation, they learned that it was Lord Jason who was recruiting soldiers, which drew the farmers to bring their sons.

With the misunderstanding cleared up, Winterfell reopened its gates, but the guards remained alert, concerned that some desperate farmers might cause trouble for the Stark ladies.
