Chapter 71: 71. The Merchant from King's Landing
"I... I need to ask Maester Luwin first. If... if he agrees, then I'll accept your offer, Lord East."
Boris, a man in his late thirties who never got a degree, was completely won over by the promise of great medical skills and fame.
"Then I'll wait for your good news!" Jason Liu smiled, pleased.
Finally, he thought, I have a literate subordinate.
If Jon also agreed to work for him, that would make two who could read and write.
Excited, Boris left and hurried back to Winterfell to speak with Maester Luwin, explaining his plan.
"So, you've decided to become a maester for this Lord Jason East?" Maester Luwin asked, his bald head catching the sunlight from the window as he looked kindly at his assistant.
"Not a maester..." Boris said, a bit embarrassed. "Just a doctor."
Maester Luwin shook his head. In Westeros, only maesters could serve as doctors for noble families. Even though Boris hadn't earned his maester's chain, Maester Luwin agreed to let him go.
He had heard that Lord East's homeland was known for its advanced medicine. Maybe Boris could learn something new.
With Maester Luwin's approval, Boris was thrilled. He packed his things that afternoon and moved to Jason Liu's place.
Jason Liu, seeing the eager doctor arrive with his belongings, was very satisfied.
Since Martha's house was full, Boris had to stay in a nearby home that Jason rented for him.
To help Boris with his duties as a doctor, Jason hired two young boys and three girls to assist him. They would learn from Boris while working as nurses and apprentices.
Jason also handed over the medical supplies he brought, each labeled with instructions in Westerosi script. Boris accepted them eagerly and began work the next day with enthusiasm.
He and his five assistants started by checking the workers on the construction site, prescribing medicine for anyone who was sick and keeping records of their progress.
Jason was pleased to see Boris taking initiative. This doctor is great, he thought.
Maybe 20 silver stags a month is too little?
Oh well, Boris hasn't complained, so it'll do for now. No need to spend more than necessary.
The five assistants, like the clerks, earned 6 silver stags a month. With the food, clothes, shoes, and soap Jason provided, it was a fair wage.
If they worked well, they'd get a raise.
As for why Lina earned 10 silver stags while the other clerks only got 6?
Well, Lina was the first person Jason hired in Westeros, and she was kind-hearted.
Also, she was beautiful. It didn't hurt to have someone nice to look at around.
Jason admitted he was a bit shallow like that.
With Boris and his team working on the medical checks, any minor illnesses among the workers were quickly treated. The construction of the new house sped up, and in just two days, they'd be ready to move the store into a larger space.
It was worth celebrating!
Over the past few days, dozens of small merchants from all over Westeros had visited the store. While none of them bought large amounts, the steady flow of customers had brought in over 40 gold dragons.
More and more small merchants from different regions were coming in. This was a good sign.
It had been almost two months since Jason arrived in Westeros, and the goods he brought had finally spread across the Seven Kingdoms.
He even met some merchants from the Iron Islands, known for being home to pirates. They bought paper, pens, and soap, which was quite a surprise.
It seemed that even in this slow-moving world, word of his products was getting around.
In the afternoon, a wealthy merchant from King's Landing entered the store, looking excited.
The man introduced himself as Anthony , the same merchant who had bought Jason's first 100 bars of soap.
Jason vaguely remembered him. It had been two months, after all.
Still, Jason greeted Anthony warmly, thanking him for supporting the business early on.
"Lord Jason, I'm here to place a large order," Anthony said eagerly. "I need 4,000 pens, 40,000 refills, 100,000 sheets of white paper, and 10,000 bars of soap."
Jason was surprised by the size of the order.
But he had to apologize. "Anthony, my friend, I'm sorry. I have the pens and refills, but the white paper is sold out, and I don't have that much soap in stock. I only have about 3,000 bars left."
Anthony looked disappointed.
"But," Jason continued, "if you can wait until tomorrow afternoon, I'll have a new shipment arriving. I can fill your entire order."
Anthony perked up immediately. "I can wait! Will you have everything I need?"
"Absolutely, I promise," Jason said with a smile.
So, Anthony and his men took their dozen carriages to stay at a nearby inn while waiting for the shipment.
Jason didn't sell any of the remaining goods to Anthony. He kept them for the small merchants who continued to visit the store.
He also spread the word to every merchant that he was buying natural gold nuggets at high prices, hoping they would pass the news along across Westeros.
