Game Of Thrones : Merchant of Two Worlds

Chapter 70: 70. Tool Man Doctor Boris

While sitting in the store, Jason Liu suddenly heard panicked shouting coming from the construction site next to his house, making him feel uneasy.

"My lord, my lord, something's wrong—someone has fainted!"

It was one of the masons in charge of the construction. Jason remembered Avis as a man with brown hair and flushed cheeks, though he could never tell if the redness came from drinking or the cold Northern wind.

Now, Avis looked worried, his forehead covered in sweat, and his face even redder than usual. "My lord, one of the workers fainted while carrying wood, and it fell, injuring two others."

Jason, alarmed by the news, immediately told Lina to grab his medicine bag from his room, while he rushed with Avis to the site.

Bud, another worker, had already taken charge, ensuring order as Jason arrived. Over 200 workers stood around, anxiously watching the scene.

When Jason approached, the workers respectfully bowed and stepped aside. In the middle of the group, a man lay unconscious in the mud, his face flushed and eyes closed. Two other injured workers were nearby—one clutching his foot in pain, and the other holding his arm, which appeared twisted and likely broken.

Lina soon arrived, handing Jason the medicine bag. Jason knelt beside the unconscious man and placed his hand on the worker's face, immediately feeling the intense heat.

"He's burning up! Why was he working with such a high fever?" Jason scolded Avis.

Avis, clearly embarrassed, explained, "Karl insisted he was fine, said sweating would help. His family relies on him for money, so he didn't want to stop working…"

Jason sighed, unsure what to say. He quickly ordered McCann and others to carry the injured men to a nearby hut. He gave Karl, the unconscious worker, an injection of penicillin and some medicine to bring down his fever. It wasn't certain it would work, but it was the best he could do.

For the others, Jason sprayed Yunnan Baiyao(pain killer) on the man with the injured foot, telling him to rest until he healed. As for the man with the broken arm, Jason called for Martha to fetch Boris, an assistant to Maester Luwin at Winterfell.

Soon, Boris arrived, wearing a gray robe but without the chain necklace that marked a true maester. After examining the man with the broken arm, Boris confirmed it needed to be set and splinted.

Boris worked quickly, showing practiced skill as he fixed the arm, impressing Jason with his medical abilities.

Once the trauma cases were handled, Boris turned his attention to the unconscious Karl. Seeing the syringe Jason had used, his eyes lit up with curiosity.

"This… injects medicine into the body?" Boris asked, fascinated.

"Yes," Jason explained, "In my homeland, some medicines that can't be taken by mouth are injected directly into the bloodstream to treat illnesses."

"Into the bloodstream? I've never heard of such a thing," Boris replied, intrigued.

"I don't know all the details," Jason admitted, "but in my homeland, medicine is very advanced. Many diseases are easily cured, and people live healthier lives."

Boris, clearly eager to learn more, asked, "My lord, do you have time to discuss your homeland's medical practices? I studied medicine in the Citadel, and I believe learning your methods could greatly improve my skills."

Jason, noticing Boris's enthusiasm, saw an opportunity. "Medicine is a vast and complicated field, Boris. But if you're willing, I could use a doctor here. I'll provide you with all the medicines I've brought from my homeland, and you can study and treat patients. What do you say?"

Boris stared at him, surprised. "You… you want to hire me as your doctor?"

Jason nodded. "Yes. I don't know much about treating illnesses myself, and my workers might need help in the future. I'll supply you with modern medicines based on your diagnoses, and you can handle the treatments."

Boris looked hesitant. "But to serve a noble, I'd need approval from the Citadel…"

Jason waved dismissively. "I'm not a Westerosi noble, so we don't have to follow their rules. If you agree, I'll bring you medical books and supplies from my homeland, and you'll become the most skilled healer in Westeros. You could even surpass the maesters."

Boris's eyes gleamed with excitement at the prospect. He was clearly tempted by the promise of fame and knowledge.
