The next day, first thing in the morning, Gildarts stood in front of one of the houses, no different from the rest. After a couple of minutes, the door opened and out came an old man, in a simple grey shirt and trousers, with an "S" on his chest and as soon as he saw the mage, he sharply grabbed his chest and almost fell down the stairs.
- What's wrong with you, elder, - the magician asked with a grin, - I'm alive, I'm alive, I couldn't defeat those teeth.
- Did you see them? - With fear in his voice, he asked.- Yes, and even sent fifty of them to the grave, they are still weak, - but at the next words, his smile disappeared, - But they took my student, so, old man, you better tell me everything you know, otherwise ...
- Alright Mr Mage.
Gildarts was about to say something else, but stopped abruptly and looked at the old man in surprise.
- Just like that?
- If you were able to defeat these creatures, you are strong enough.
- If that's the case, then spit it out.
- Let's go to my house, I'll tell you everything, - and without waiting for the mage's consent, he turned and went into the house, Gildarts had nothing to do but to follow the old man.

Both sat at the table and were silent for a minute or so.
- Speak already," the mage said, unable to bear the silence.
- Where to start," the old man sighed, poured himself a cup of tea and took a sip, "The disappearances started five months ago. For the first two weeks, we didn't pay attention to it, because death is normal, but when it happened for the third time, we got worried and turned to the Duke. But after a week he told us to keep quiet about it, that he would sort it out himself. And we what, we are ordinary people, we believed and again a week passed, again disappearance, then again and again, not withstanding we again came to the Duke, but he did not even come out to meet us, but just passed through the maid that we should go away and do not talk.
- И?
He sighed heavily and looked fondly at the photograph on the table, which showed a girl with long brown hair, brown eyes and a bright smile, embracing the old man.
- The next day, at our request, a group of six mages came to the city and promised to sort it out, but as you know, the next day, they just disappeared, but the most interesting thing is that the disappearance stopped for three weeks. We thought they'd got over it and just left without saying anything, but we were wrong. After three weeks, everything resumed again, but it got worse, the kids started disappearing almost every day for a whole week. And at the end of the week, I was visited by a creature like the one you destroyed, but three times bigger and it could talk.
- Three times as big, you say? - The mage asked in surprise, because even the monsters he had dealt with were at least as strong as A-rank mages, and that red one was almost S-rank. Which meant that there was a monster equal in strength to an S-rank mage, this made Gildarts start to worry about Eros. After all, the titan was the one who suggested this crazy plan to get into the enemy base, but if there's such a creature lurking there, the situation is dire!
- Yes, it told us to ask for help from the guilds and the lives of the other children would depend on us, because if the mages didn't come, they would take them, so it was only after three months that we asked for help. Almost every week mages came, but not one survived until morning.
As soon as the old man finished, Gildarts thought deeply about the whole damn thing.
- Hey, why are you telling me this? - I can tell from the last conversation that you were forbidden to say anything about them.
- But there is one exception," a sad smile appeared on his face, "If the mage survives until morning, we must bring him to the house and tell him everything..." he said.
In the next moment, Gildarts felt a rush of goosebumps on his back, he looked at the ceiling... Eight pairs of red eyes were looking at the mage.
Without thinking long, Gildarts grabbed the old man and let his power go. Under the pressure, the house was torn to shreds.
- That was close," the mage said with relief, "You should have at least warned me.
- Don't lie man," came a rough, hissing voice from the smoke where the creature had come from, "You spotted me from the moment you approached the old man's house.
Gildarts only laughed out loud at the monster's words.
- You're right," he put the shocked elder on the ground and kneaded his fists, "It's hard not to notice a carcass like you, but I didn't know where you were hiding.
- Gry!
- You're not a dog, you're a monkey," the mage said with a smile as he saw the creature snagging on a tree, spinning around and flying backwards, where it was met by Gildarts' fist. All that was heard was the thud of impact and the cracking of bones.
The monster lay on the ground like a broken toy, giving no sign of life.
- It is strange, of course. Usually such beasts, when they smell my strength, run away as far from me as possible, but these ones are coming," the mage said thoughtfully, stroking his chin, "Well, tell me what else you know," he looked at the old man and saw him looking behind him with wide-open eyes.
Gildarts felt a strong pressure of magical power behind his back and before he could turn around, he received a blow right on the back of his head, throwing him a few metres away. But he recovered quickly. Jumping up and looking at his opponent. The creature was standing in front of him, on half-bent legs, swaying, with a stream of dark maroon blood flowing from its mouth, and completing the picture was a fist-shaped indentation in its chest.
- Strange, how can you still be alive...? - The mage said, stroking his neck, -Unpleasant, you know, -but he was not allowed to complain for long, the creature attacked Gildarts again, -You have become stronger and faster....
He dodged the creature's blows while trying to study the creature closer, provoking it with insults, but it did not react in any way.
- What's the matter with you? - With annoyance the mage stretched out and with one sharp blow in the shoulder, tore off the arm of the creature, but what made the mage surprised was that it did not pay attention to it and continued to attack him, - "Puppet ...?"- but Gildarts quickly put that idea out of his mind, - "You were definitely alive before, this is more like a reanimated dead person... Yes most likely it is, which means..."
The mage didn't give in to the monster anymore and with the next blow, blew its head off.
- Can you still move? - The creature stood up again and swayed again, attacked the mage and the fact that it had no head did not prevent it from seeing where Gildarts was, - Is it a puppet? The mage caught the monster's hand, - I'll have to praise Eros for the interesting idea, - he created a cube in his other hand, which began to increase rapidly. In a couple of seconds, it grew to ten metres, swallowing both the monster and the magician....
As soon as the cube disappeared, only Gildarts was left standing, and the monster and the destroyed house disappeared.
- 'Old man, you're sorry about the house,' the mage said guiltily, looking up at him.
- Did you really manage to defeat that monster... And it's all over... - falling to his knees, the elder cried.
- I hate to break it to you, but you're wrong.
- What?
- That monster was just a puppet, and somewhere lurking is the puppeteer himself," Gildarts looked again at the Duke's mansion, not knowing why, but he was very much drawn that way, "Okay, I'll go visit your Duke and once again I'm sorry about the house.
All the way, Gildarts was very worried about Eros, still he shouldn't have listened to him and agreed to this delusional plan. There was nothing to be done now though, you'd have to have faith in him that he'd be alright.
When the mage was already a kilometre away from the mansion, the red bracelet on his arm lit up, and the closer he got to it, the brighter the light became.
- There you are," the older mage smirked as he stroked the bracelet, "Nice toy, I'll have to get him to make another one for Kanochka later....
***
Eros looked at the creature's protruding head with boredom, and occasionally at the bracelet on his arm.
"Where's that non-magician, I've been waiting for him for about three hours now!"- he thought with annoyance and threw a piece of dried bread at the creature, but it again did not react to the hit to the head. The children, who saw it, tried to huddle in the opposite corner out of fear, so that the monster wouldn't think of them. "Strange, of course..."- At that moment, the stone on the bracelet lit up and grew brighter and brighter with each passing second, - "Finally! Runes are the top stuff after all!" - Eros nodded contentedly, stroking the bracelet.
The creature that had not shown any signs of 'life' before suddenly stirred and walked towards Eros.
"Alive?!"- The titan thought in surprise as he watched the creature approach his cage and slowly opened it, but his next action made Eros freeze, the creature did not go in his direction, but in the opposite direction to the other children.
- Everyone stand behind me," Julie said confidently, covering all the children, but it was clear from the trembling in her voice that she was afraid. The kid who had first spoken to Eros also stood in front of her. But the creature paid no attention to him and grabbed the girl by the arm, pulling her towards the exit.
But when they were almost out of the cage, the monster stopped abruptly and looked towards Eros, who took the silver ring off his finger.
- The titan said with annoyance, looking at the frozen girl, "Why didn't you tell me you were a mage?
The ring was specially enchanted by the titan to suppress his magical power to that of a C-rank mage. He wanted to get into the very centre of the enemy's lair, and when he was as close to the main man as possible, to stab him in the back. And he suppressed his strength so that the enemy would not pay attention to him and consider him a common weakling.
But how could Eros know that such a weak mage would be next to him without even knowing it?
The creature released the girl and reached for the titan....
