 Enjoy your reading!

- Don't listen to her," the old man spoke with a heavy sigh, "She recently lost her daughter and hasn't recovered from it yet...

- I'm not crazy! - shouted the woman, looking at the old man with fury, "I saw that creature! Only for a second, but I saw it... It was a demon, a real demon!

- Can you describe this creature? - In his life, Eros had learnt to know if a person was lying or not, and such simple people were the easiest to read, and looking into this woman's face, he saw only true horror. It was impossible to fake such a thing and Eros decided to believe her, maybe she really did see a demon, or maybe it was just a figment of the imagination of an ordinary woman who had lost her child.

Shuddering, she looked at Gildarts, he nodded the same way.

- It was..." the woman began to tremble, her eyes filled with fear, "It was at least two metres in size, completely black... It had four fingers and toes with razor-sharp claws," she sank down on the chair, "It had six pairs of red eyes and a mouth full of sharp teeth.

- A demon, huh? - Gildarts said thoughtfully.

- Master, I believe her.

- If so, we need to walk around the city some more," a grin appeared on the older mage's face, "We should be attacked by this demon today, so let's see it up close.

- Thank you for your information, you've been very helpful.

The woman looked at the boy in surprise.

- Come on Eros, we'll have a sleepless night tonight.

- Wait, gentlemen magicians, - exclaimed the surprised Elder, - Don't believe that crazy woman.

- We will decide who to believe, so step aside.

The old man had no choice but to step aside and look sadly in the direction of the departing mages.

- I hope you can help our city..." the elder whispered softly.

Leaving the tavern, the two mages split up and began to wander around the town, questioning people about the disappearance. Mostly everyone cooperated and told what they knew, but the mages didn't find out anything new. Only that before them there were three groups of mages that came to the city, but all three of them disappeared the next day right from the hotel. And no one saw anything.

When it was already dark, both mages went to the nearest park. And if they were attacked, so as not to hurt anyone or destroy anything.

- What do you think? - Gildarts asked, looking up at the beauty of the stars.

- The Elder is dark," Eros said thoughtfully, "The woman did not lie, the Elder did not lie when he asked for help, just as he did not lie about the Duke making threats, that is also true.

- You've voiced my thoughts, I too think he's not telling the truth.

- So we just have to wait for the attack, only then we can understand more.

- Yes, - after a moment Gildarts clutched his stomach sharply, - I must have eaten something wrong, - his face was wrinkled with pain, - We shouldn't have gone to that restaurant after all....

- I told you," Eros said with boredom, "You wanted to save money, so you went to the cheapest one.

- I'll be back for fifteen minutes, don't go anywhere!

And without waiting for a reply, he jumped under the nearest bushes.

- We have a serious investigation here... - Eros sighed tiredly and looked around, - Still, I want to see this demon in person... - at that moment, he heard the rustling of leaves behind him and before he could turn around, his mouth was clamped by a big hairy paw and what surprised the titan most of all, he just couldn't break free and when he was about to use magic, everything in front of his eyes went black.

- Wuh, - Gildarts was relieved, - I thought I would die, - he looked at the place where Eros was sitting, - Eros, where are you? I don't have time for games now, come out! Eros! - the next moment his gaze was filled with steel, -Come out, you think I won't notice you.

There was silence for a couple of seconds until a two metre tall creature jumped down from the tree, exactly like what the woman had described.

- You didn't lie, handsome," Gildarts' gaze shifted to the opposite side, where another creature of the same kind crawled out, "And you brought your brother, too," more and more creatures appeared in front of the mage with each passing second, "There are so many of you," the mage said with a slight annoyance as he threw off his cloak with his right hand. The monsters began to growl at Gildarts, slowly approaching him.

- Hey, why are you hiding? - The mage exclaimed reproachfully, looking at a tree in the centre of the park, on which stood the same creature, but with a slight difference, its fur was red. "You must be the leader," the creature exuded a powerful pressure that far exceeded that of the blacks.

One of the monsters ran at Gildarts, but it was torn apart before it reached a metre away. The others that were about to rush at him froze abruptly, their fur standing up.

- Get down, I can destroy these even with my eyes closed," he grinned, "In the next moment, a pressure so strong that it nailed all the dark monsters to the ground.

- My head," Eros groaned, opening his eyes, "Somebody switch on the light and give me a drink," he was handed a mug, which he quickly emptied and returned, "Thank you..." he stopped abruptly, looking in front of him.

His eyes quickly adjusted to the darkness and Eros saw a girl of about fifteen, with long brown hair, brown eyes and a calm smile. She was wearing a white jumper and a long grey skirt.

- You're welcome," she put the cup away and handed me a tray with some white slurry and a piece of bread, "This is your portion, eat it.

- How long have I been here? - He felt his stomach rumbling and wished he had eaten in that restaurant... Though remembering how Gildarts had gone....

- A couple of hours, but I'm sorry, I don't know.

- It's okay, thank you... - Eros looked thoughtfully into the girl's face, making her blush, - We haven't met anywhere, do you look familiar?

She shook her head.

- Yes... - the next moment it suddenly struck him and he took out a thick stack of leaflets and quickly started flipping through them until he got to a certain one, - Are you Julia?

- Yeah, how do you know?

- Well, I'm actually a mage and I came to this city with my mentor to investigate the missing children, - after his words, the girl looked at him in surprise and sighed sadly.

- You found us, but... - she pointed to the right, and looking there, he saw another cage with five boys and one girl in it, a little further away from this cage, there was another cage with children in it as well, there was another one next to it, then another and another, - Not all of them are here, because every week, these creatures take one of us away and never come back.

- Ju, stop talking to him, he'll be next anyway, there's no need to help him, - from behind Julia came a boy of about sixteen, with short red hair, a big nose and blue eyes. He was wearing black trousers made of cheap material, the same shirt, and a sleeveless leather jacket with no buttons.

- Gary! Don't say that! - jumped up and angrily exclaimed the girl.

- Why am I next?

- If you're really a mage, which I doubt, then you'll be next, - the guy sniggered, - You're not the first mage here, there were ten before you, and as soon as they were brought here, they were taken away one by one until they ran out, - he sighed and sat down in the corner, - And you're a very unlucky guy.

- Why?

- Today is the day," the boy flinched as a head with six eyes and a mouth filled with sharp teeth peeked into the room.

Eros saw the creature too, and raising his hand to the level of his face, he gave it the middle finger. Of course, it was unlikely to realise the full sacred meaning of this gesture.

- Are there many of these things? - Studying this monster, Eros asked.

- A few dozen," he scratched his cheek in embarrassment, "That's what the mages before you said, they said they were surrounded by several dozen of them.

- I see, thanks for the information," Now we just have to wait for Gildarts to come, and hopefully he will be here soon. I can get out of here easily, but I don't think I can take the kids and protect them from all these things."

Gildarts sighed and shook his head as he surveyed the carcasses of the defeated creatures.

- You're not demons, you're just monsters, but I've never seen anything like you... Where did you creeps come from? - After dropping the last red one into the pile, his hand glowed white and the carcasses of monsters disappeared in the next moment, - I hope this fool is alright, - Gildarts' gaze was directed at a beautiful mansion three kilometres away from the park, - I think we should visit the Duke.
