Chapter 294 A strange letter
The instant Mary exited the car, Nika began cursing in spanish while hitting Uriel with the first thing she saw, which was an empty water bottle, leaving absolutely no trace of the stunning and silent beauty and giving place to a very angry mexican woman.
"Bastard! You've been giving me the cold shoulder for how long and the first thing you do is call me to clean up your mess! Who do you think you are?"
"I'm your boss." He replied nonchalantly as he watched Mary enter the hospital all by herself. In the past, he would have gone out of his way to take her inside and would have accompanied her until she was admitted. It was the right thing to do and he knew it, but he couldn't care less.
"Yes, you are! But we're also friends, companions even! We're like a couple without all the fun stuff. You can call me and ask me to do my job even if we're mad at each other, what you can't do is expect me to be fine with it." After pestering him for so long to act more like the CEO of their company, Nika had to admit that he was right.
But she was still very upset by his attitude despite guessing that it must have something to do with Water warlock's possession.
"I'm sorry." Uriel looked her in the eye and apologized sincerely. He didn't say things will get better from now on, but he also didn't make any excuses.
"That's more like it." Nika said with a satisfied smile as she grabbed the wheel. Now that she was alone in the car with Uriel she was able to drive as recklessly as she wanted, but even though their car could be considered luxurious it wasn't a Nikola which meant it didn't have driving assistance or autopilot.
It somewhat reminded Uriel of the first time he got into a car with her, but now he wasn't scared. Knowing that he was able to regenerate from any wound gave him a sense of safety very few people had, but at the same time, all the thrill was also dissipated by it.
Nika sped up across the street, overtaking vehicles like she was on a race. She eyed Uriel and was a bit disappointed that he didn't act all flustered like last time.

Over the next couple days Uriel did his best to try and act the same as always with Nika, but his emotions were still a mess and all he wanted was some peace and quiet. He focused as best he could on his studies, but the more he learned about physics and biology, the more clear it was that he wasn't cut out to be neither a combat engineer or a field medic.
Eventually, he was having so much trouble keeping up with the studies that he decided he wouldn't pursue any of those specialization and after thanking both Professor Fermi and Professor Lamar, he went out to seek Charlie.
After the outpost incident, the previously somewhat safe area near the lost city became a much more perilous place and because of that and the lack of personnel, most rangers were dispatched inside city walls.
Ever since the arrival and the presence of humans with traits, cops became completely obsolete but that didn't mean the citizens were abandoned. They could still seek out the help of the army and private corporations, but the closest thing to police were the rangers who acted as peace officers.
Staying inside the city was no issue for most Rangers, since the reason why they chose that specialization was because of their weak traits or even out of civic duty. This wasn't the case for Charlie who was accustomed to spending most of her time outside the city. She felt smothered by the tall walls and the lack of sunlight weighed heavy on her mood.
There were no traces of her usually cheerful and lighthearted attitude and even her outfit was completely normal. Instead of her usual bikini top, she was wearing a tank top, blue jeans and low boots. The only part of her accustomed attire was her cowboy hat with a sheriff star.
"Miss Charlie, I almost don't recognize you." Uriel greeted her.
"Huh? You're the Magnum hunter! Why wouldn't you recognize me?"
"Well..." Uriel tried to speak but Charlie cut him short.
"Actually, there's no need to even say it out loud. It's because of my clothes isn't it?" Uriel nodded in reply and she continued. "I was forced to change into something less eye catching, the city is filled with perverts! I was supposed to help keep the peace but wherever I went trouble followed me until I changed my clothes." She looked defeated.
"Miss Charlie, I came to let you know that I dropped both field medicine and combat engineer, but I'll remain under your care for the time being."
"Yeehaaw! You and I will spend some quality time together!" Charlie loudly cheered while holding Uriel's hands.
He didn't share her enthusiasm, but he couldn't deny it felt good to be around someone who at least pretended to be happy about his presence.
"I already have someone I like." The young student replied as he took back his hands, though he didn't know if he was referring to Nika or Medusa.
"I didn't meant it like that. I'm actually about to go on a mission and I could use a man like you."
"That sounded dirty." Uriel muttered.
"I know!" She smiled at him. Her flirtatious demeanor hadn't changed in the slightest, even under the heavy workload she had been submitted to. "I was thinking on going back to the Ranger's and hand in this letter, but since you're already here we should go check it out first."
Charlie handed Uriel a piece of paper which reminded him of the strange note with rules they found on the outpost, but it was nothing like that. It was something far worse.
