Douluo Dalu 3 | Divine Destruction

Chapter 19: Vibrancy of Life

[What happened?] The tired voice of Wu Zhangkong entered the ears of Tang Wulin and Gu Yuena who snickered quietly at their teacher's voice. While it was late that wasn't the reason for his exhaustion. It was clear that Wu Zhangkong was tired of all the trouble Tang Wulin brought.

"We met a student fighting Guang Long, Wulin defeated him, we ate with the student, and then he had an epiphany." Gu Yuena explained briefly, a small smile forming on her lips at how ridiculous it must sound to their teacher.

What had started as a simple outing somehow involved them beating up the younger brother of the leader of the Eastsea Mecha Brigade, damaging him badly, and surely incurring the wrath of one of the top military leaders, if not the top, in the city.

No matter how you viewed it, it was strange. However to Gu Yuena, it was more amusing than she'd like to admit though that was reserved for the reaction of her stoic other half and teacher, the backlash would not be even a quarter as amusing.

That was part of the reason she reported it so honestly to Wu Zhangkong. Well, that and the fact that Wulin surely wouldn't lie. The main reason was that she wanted Wu Zhangkong to protect them from Guang Biao's retaliation since she was confident he was stronger.

They may be the same rank of Spirit Emperor she was sure Wu Zhangkong was stronger as not only was his soul power unnaturally dense but he was also on the verge of breaking through and becoming a Spirit Sage.

Adding all that onto the two black spirit rings he possessed and his generally high ring age, Gu Yuena was confident that he could defeat Guang Biao with relative ease. However, she was fairly confident that they would be safe even without them.

There were two reasons for this, one she was confident that either she or Wulin had a high chance of beating him alone let alone together, or if Wulin stopped holding back as much. In the end, Guang Biao had a dragon martial soul so he couldn't put up much of a fight.

However, the second reason was much more vague. If Wulin agreed to fight Guang Long that meant, in her mind, that he was prepared to battle against his older brother. It wouldn't make sense for the overly cautious robotic other half of hers to make a reckless decision.

[Haa. Send me your location, I'll take care of the student.] Wu Zhangkong replied seriously, a small sigh leaving his lips. While it wasn't said, it was obvious that he intended to protect them from Guang Biao as well though it was unlikely Wulin understood that.

"Thank you~." Gu Yuena thanked him sincerely, tapping the end call button on the spirit communicator on Wulin's wrist, leaving the first part of their teacher's request to her other half to complete, it was his spirit tool after all.

Leaning back in the chair at the restaurant silence befell the two of them, the only sounds being that of the restaurant owner cooking for other patrons and Xie Xie's soft, rhythmic breathing. Covering the table was dozens of large bowls numbering close to fifty.

"So, what did you think?" Gu Yuena asked Wulin, looking at him from the corner of her regal eyes. The two sat on one side of the table with Xie Xie on the other since Xie Xie didn't want anything to do with either of them but it turned out for the best.

"Hm?" Wulin hummed in confusion, not truly understanding what she meant. There had been many things she could be asking his opinion for. Was she asking how the shopping was, perhaps punching Guang Long, or maybe the food?

"How did it feel to relax?" Gu Yuena questioned him, a soft smile on her face as she looked at him, her purple eyes full of joy and happiness. For some odd reason, he felt his heartbeat increase as he looked at her face, an odd feeling but one that felt oddly nice.

Unlike the other times his body acted weird this time he didn't think it was a bad thing, it was like something was telling him it wasn't bad. Rather, this feeling was a good thing, a thing he should treasure.

"It was… fun?" Wulin spoke hesitantly, not truly knowing if the words he used were correct. For some odd reason, today felt different from every other day. Unlike the other days that seemed so bleak, so forgettable, today seemed so much more… 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭.

He didn't understand it. He didn't understand the soft warmth in his chest, the quickened beat of his heart, his strange attachment to such an otherwise normal day. He couldn't understand any of it but for some reason…

He felt like he didn't have to.

"Is that so?" Gu Yuena spoke happily, a sincere grin on her beautiful face. For some reason Wulin found his eyes locked onto her face, the image burning itself into his memory forever. Such a normal situation looked so… beautiful.

No matter how run down the building was or how simple her clothing was everything seemed so… vibrant, so perfect. It made no sense, it felt like his mind wasn't working. Nothing made sense.

His eyes ignored everything around him, his mind focused purely on her face. It was a face that he had seen every day for over a week yet it seemed so new to him. It was like he was seeing color for the first time.

For some reason her voice reverberated through his mind, her every giggle running through his mind. It all sounded so perfect, so beautiful. He thought he understood but it seems only now did he understand. Gu Yuena was truly beautiful.

His strong body seemed to have fallen under a spell yet he didn't want to break free even if he could. The soft and gentle warmth in his chest that he usually ignored was now impossible to ignore, it felt as though it took up every part of his brain.

His heightened instincts and his logical mind fought against one another, one demanding he look at the girl in front of him and the other demanding he look away, to focus on other more important things.

And, for the first time, Tang Wulin ignored his logical mind.
