Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Dinner Date with a Business Partner (II)
'Hah, why should I worry about his feelings? His love for me was fake anyway,' Eve sneered inwardly. 'Why would he need to lie for five years straight if he truly loves me?'
She felt more controlled after she convinced herself that she wasn't being too cruel to him. She believed that Alex, more or less, deserved to be treated harshly.
People might call her petty or like to hold a grudge, and to that, Eve would say that they were damn right.
The elevator went up to the top floor until they reached the rooftop.
Eve was surprised because she expected it to be an open area that would be extremely cold, but the elevator was connected to a small greenhouse.
The rooftop greenhouse was beautiful, with many off season flowers under the dim fluorescent light. There was a table and two seats in the middle, with a candle that signified that table was for a romantic dinner date.
When the elevator door was opened, she realized the greenhouse was warm, so she guessed that this place had its heating system.
Alex walked out of the elevator first, he turned towards her and smiled sincerely while extending his hand for the second time, "May I?"
Eve stared at Alex, and then at the beautiful greenhouse behind him. Her expression was unreadable for him at first, before it suddenly twisted into an angry one.
Eve was furious, not because he did something wrong, but because he did everything right.
This greenhouse was also one of the goalposts inside her dream journal. From the off-season flowers, the heating, the small table for them to enjoy the greenhouse, and most importantly, Alex himself, standing in front of her while extending his hand.
Everything about it was the things she wanted to do with him… before they broke up.
Thus, she suppressed her urge to put her hand over his once again and said coldly, "I told you there is no need to hold my hand. We are here to discuss our business deal, not to have a dinner date."
The smile on Alex's face slowly diminished, his gaze darkened as it became pretty obvious that he was actually upset. Eve guessed that he must've prepared everything so Eve would be happy and throw herself into his embrace.
Eve knew this man like an open book. At least, she thought she was because Alex would do these many things just to impress Eve when they were dating, and when Eve didn't notice it, he would get upset.
And the thing that would calm him down?
Sex, of course.
Eve thought he would finally show his true self, angrily yelling at her and all. But it didn't take long for him to calm down. He took a deep breath and showed a smile once again, but this time, it was much faker and more distant than before.
"Then, let's walk side by side. I'm sure you can handle this much interaction, right?"
Eve nodded reluctantly.
They walked side by side towards the table, and once they were close to it, Alex took a bigger step and grabbed her chair first. He pulled the chair for her, but out of his expectation, Eve walked to the other seat and sat comfortably.
Alex's jaw dropped. He felt like an idiot as he was still holding the chair for her to sit on.
Eve smiled and said, "So, can we start discussing our business deal? I'm curious what kind of idea you have in mind since I thought we already had everything settled before."
Alex quickly controlled his expression as he fixed his gaze towards her. He sat on the chair he was holding, facing Eve, who had her arms and legs crossed, a sign that she was physically and mentally guarded against him and wouldn't show any opening.
Honestly, Alex had no plan to discuss that 'business deal' they had. He simply thought that Eve would finally lower her guard after seeing all the preparations that Alex made for a romantic candle dinner inside a greenhouse.
But now, he was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Should he speak to her about the business deal that would dampen the mood?
Or should he continue trying to court her and win her heart?
Alex contemplated in silence for a long time until Eve dropped an ultimatum, "If you have nothing to say, then I'll be leaving."
"Calm down, now, Miss Carpenter," Alex reacted quickly. He cleared his throat and pressed a button on the table. "Just because we have a business discussion to talk about, doesn't mean that we cannot enjoy the night, right? We can stargaze the sky from this greenhouse. We can also see the flowers under the dim lights. Oh, and I've called the maids to bring the food in."
"I know you don't like me, but, the least you could do is to appreciate the meal I cooked," Alex added, making sure that Eve wouldn't reject him this time.
Eve considered it for a moment before nodding slowly, "I guess there is nothing wrong with dinner before we discuss whatever you have in mind. Though, I thought everything was clear when we struck the deal yesterday. I carry your heir, and you deal with Pierre. Then, I'll leave you with that baby and act like nothing happened between us."
It astonished Alex how easy it seemed for Eve to say those words.
He had always been thinking about their future together, especially when they had children. He refused to let her walk away just like that.
"Do you know what kind of problem Pierre Dust is? He might not be much, but his father—my uncle—is a much bigger threat," Alex argued. "I don't think letting you leave our child together after giving birth would be a fair compensation."
"And what do you want? Do you want me to stay? Hah…" Eve looked away to show that she was over this conversation. But truthfully, she was feeling extremely uncomfortable when talking about their future child.
