Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Dinner Date with a Business Partner (I)

Eve locked herself up inside her room for the entire evening. She was still quite curious about the mansion, as there were many unexplored areas that she had yet to check.

But then she recalled her interaction in the kitchen with Alex and realized that she was getting way too comfortable with that bastard.

"Why did I cook him lunch anyway?" Eve asked herself. She felt that she had been bewitched for a few hours after seeing that dumb ear-to-ear smile he made. It reminded her of their good old times, and she simply made lunch and expected him to do the dishes later… as usual.

Eve tried to get her mind off the whole situation by reading a few documents from her lawyer. She might've gotten help from Alex, but she wouldn't lower her guard down. That bastard Pierre managed to lie to her for literally five years of their relationship, so his credibility was low in Eve's eyes.

As she continued reading, her mind couldn't stop thinking about Alex that she misread a few words when she read the document out loud.

"The following party will meat—meet with the prosecutor regarding the Alex—A-Altercation, and mush—must—ahh!" Eve took off her glasses and threw them onto the laptop screen. She was frustrated, and this wasn't even an unfamiliar feeling for her, as she was often distracted whenever she thought of that man.

She leaned on the chair, staring at the tall ceiling as she reflected on her action.

'Am I really that easy? All those lies he carefully lied on for five years to fool me, and all I need is just one smile from him to let my guard down?'

Once again, Eve could vividly imagine that dumb, ear-to-ear smile he made, and her lips thinned as she was even more annoyed when she couldn't deny that she might be THAT easy.

'What makes you think he will not deceive you again, Evelyn? Better keep it strictly business, because you need to protect your heart, right?'

Eve might look like a cold woman outside, but she had her moments of weakness, and all of those moments were tied to Alex, so it angered her whenever she realized that she was still emotionally tied.

Eve took a deep breath and told herself, "Let's get this over with. What's so hard with carrying his baby for nine months, and leaving with all my problems solved? It's a good deal, right?"

Yet, the moment she said that her hand subconsciously clenched the hem of her dress as she felt uncomfortable all over.

Knock. Knock.

Eve turned her head towards the door and waited until the man said something.

"It's time for dinner, Eve," Alex said from the other side of the door.

Eve frowned. She checked her watch, and her eyes widened when it was already eight in the evening, five hours after her late lunch. She was so distracted by Alex that she kept reading the legal documents without actually absorbing any of the information!

She was already in a terrible mood right now, but that mood was soon vanquished when Alex calmly said, "It's time to discuss our business deal."

Her terrible mood immediately turned into nervousness. She tensed up, unsure whether to feel frightened or angry. Maybe both.

Nevertheless, she took a deep breath and replied, "Please wait. I'll be there soon."

After hearing no more voices from outside, Eve began to freshen up. She didn't want to look overdressed in front of him, because he wasn't THAT special for her.

Still, she wanted to show him that she was doing great even without that bastard. So she decided to just wear a casual purple dress fitting for a casual date night.

As usual, she put her hair bun high to give an illusion that she was taller, and wore a high heel, even in this mansion, because this was basically an enemy territory.

It took her roughly thirty minutes to get ready.

She opened the door, and her heart jumped when she saw Alex leaning on the wall, playing with his phone. He was wearing a black turtleneck and denim jeans.

"W-why are you here?!" Eve blurted out.

Alex put his phone down and lifted his head. The edge of his lips curled when he saw the beautiful lady with her casual dress, "Waiting for you, obviously."

"Not here, but in the dining room!"

"Well, our dinner is not in the dining room. It's on the rooftop. The view is beautiful from up there," Alex replied. "So I have to escort you."

"Wouldn't it be too cold?" Eve asked. "It's already fall season, you know."

"Just follow me," Alex said as he offered his hand, so they could go together while holding hands.

Eve stared at Alex, and then at his hand. Her instinct told her to accept it so they could walk together. She almost put her hand on top of his, until she snapped back to reality when she remembered that she shouldn't be weak in front of this scum.

She quickly retracted her hand and gazed at him coldly, "There's no need to hold hands. Just escort me there. We're going to talk about our business deal, are we not?"

Alex's hand was left hanging for a moment before he slowly withdrew his hand and smiled thin, "You're right. It's all for our business deal. Follow me."

Eve quietly followed behind Alex. They used the elevator, and there was nothing but an awkward silence between them.

Eve liked to believe that Alex was not affected by her words just now, because she remembered how clingy and needy Alex was when they were dating back then. He was like a dog who would constantly follow her around their apartment, sometimes hugging her from behind for no real reason, only so they could share warmth, mostly because electricity was so damn expensive and winter nights could be a bit too cold.

Eve glanced at Alex to check on him, and he seemed unaffected as he still showed his laid back, nonchalant expression, which relieved her.
