Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Our Home
But Eve had a completely different idea.
Eve saw how his gaze softened towards her for an unknown reason. She refused to believe that he was thinking of something romantic all of a sudden.
But that gaze, that damned soft gaze was deadly for her. It reminded her of the sweet times, and all the sweet dreams they had together.
It was a gaze that would melt Eve's heart instantly.
'I'm not going to be tricked by this lying scumbag anymore,' Eve told herself as she stared back at Alex fiercely and said, "Stop staring like an idiot. The light is green now."
"Oh… yeah."
Alex's gaze turned cold once more, and he drove through Los Angeles's busy street. After some twists and turns, Eve realized they were driving towards a luxurious hillside area where most of the rich were staying.
The hillside was directly facing the open sea. It was a beautiful place for those who wanted to settle.
Amongst all the big homes and mansions that they passed, Alex's car finally stopped at a mansion that was probably the biggest out of every house and mansion in this area.
As the automatic gate was opening, Eve couldn't help but comment, "I know you're wealthy, but this is a sickening level of wealth. It makes me sick thinking about the disparity between our backgrounds—I mean, our real background."
Alex drove the car into the huge garden surrounding the mansion. He bought this mansion with his own money, mostly from his investments while he was living in poverty with Evelyn.
Of course, he had to hide all of his busy business deals and investments because he was pretending to be a poor guy.
But at that time, when he told Eve that he only had a hundred bucks in his bank account, he was lying through his teeth.
Part of him felt guilty for lying, but another part of him was glad that he could fool Eve because his lies could prolong their relationship.
Alex pressed his lips together as he drove into the basement parking lot full of limited edition cars. Eve's corner of mouth couldn't help but twitch out of annoyance and disappointment towards the man next to her.
"You have all the limited edition cars we put in our journals back then. So, how do you feel to own them all? It was a dream of mine when I was young," Eve asked sarcastically.
"Pretty boring. They're just cars, after all," Alex replied nonchalantly. He wanted to lie at first. He could've just said that it felt amazing and fulfilling. But truthfully, the only reason why he bought all these unnecessary cars was for her.
She had a lot of dream cars and other expensive stuff she wrote in their dream journal, so for whatever she wrote in there, Alex would instantly buy it for her. He had prepared them all inside this mansion, just in case they would be 'successful' in the future and he could 'afford' them all for her.
"If you like any of these, you can take it," Alex said as he parked the car. "Or if you want them all, I don't mind if you take them all. These things are worthless for me."
'Because it's originally yours, Evelyn,' Alex added in his heart.
Eve felt a twinge of pain when Alex said stuff like that so nonchalantly.
It was natural for him to be so nonchalant because it truly meant nothing for a man born with a golden spoon like him.
But that wasn't the case for Eve.
She excitedly thought of these luxurious cars and wrote them inside their dream journal because she thought it would motivate them to work hard.
'Now it feels like a joke… everything between us feels like a joke, Alex…'
Thinking about it only worsens her mood. Thus, she scoffed and looked away, "I don't accept charity from a lying scumbag. I'm here for our business, not to beg for a car."
Alex already expected this answer, but it still hurt him a bit because these cars would eventually turn into rusty scrap. Alex didn't like any of them and never planned to drive them. He only had them around for Eve.
Nevertheless, he shrugged and responded with, "Whatever. I don't have any use of these cars anyway. They are just collections at best."
Alex opened the car door and walked around his car to open the door for Eve, only for Eve to open it herself and walk out.
"You don't need to do that for me. We're not dating anymore, Mr. Langford."
"It's a force of habit," Alex replied with the same annoyance in his tone. "I always did that when we were dating. It's just a muscle memory at this point."
"Then you have to forget that muscle memory somehow," Eve said. "Anyway, please lead the way. This mansion of yours is unnecessarily huge, like a maze."
Again, Alex sensed the mockery in her tone, but he paid it no mind.
She had seen through every lie that he intricately crafted just to keep their relationship.
Now that the cat was out of the bag, he didn't have to pretend anymore.
"Come, Eve, I will give you a tour of our new home," Alex invited with a thin smile as he grabbed Eve's wrist, and pulled her into the elevator.
Eve should've yanked her hand away because she didn't like to be dragged around by this scum.
But for some reason, her brain stopped working for a second when Alex said 'our new home' while showing that thin smile.
For a split second, Eve visualized that they were still dating, and they finally bought their dream house. Her handsome Alex excitedly wanted to show her the result of their blood, sweat, and tears.
Thus, Eve stayed silent as Alex dragged her into the elevator, as it was difficult for her to snap out of that imagination.
'Our new home. How beautiful would that be if that's real, Alex.'
