Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Her Dream Car
"Can you be any earlier? It's only eight in the morning, for God's sake," Eve complained, resuming her standoffish attitude in front of Alex.
Alex didn't give her an immediate response. He took a good look at Eve who was wearing a casual burgundy midi dress with a black coat draped over her shoulder.
He lived with Eve for years, and he knew most of her style. Despite her tough persona to others, she always dressed femininely, and sometimes, even dressed cutely.
Nevertheless, he just wanted to take a good look and imprint her beauty into his brain once more. He hadn't seen her in such a casual dress for two years, and the office dress style that she usually wore didn't quench his thirst as this one.
'You are so gorgeous, Eve. You don't know how long I have been dreaming of this,' Alex lamented in his heart. Unfortunately, he couldn't say it out loud. He didn't want to show weakness and his hopeless heart in front of this prickly lady.
"I've been here since seven, but I ought to give you more time to prepare," Alex answered coldly. "Though, you seem well prepared. I thought you'd chicken out and cancel our business deal."
Eve scoffed.
"I never back down from any deal that I made. Besides, it's just living together in your new house, right? What's so bad about that?" Eve said boldly. If she could be honest, she was so nervous about this whole ordeal that she couldn't sleep the whole night.
This man—despite all his lies—was still the same man that she had been in love with for years. Just imagining them living together made her scared.
She was scared that seeing his face every morning for the next nine or ten months would make that special feeling burst out of her chest.
"As expected from Miss Carpenter, huh," Alex sneered. "Come with me. I will drive you to our new house. Leave all of your belongings at the door, my people will pick them up."
"Hm? Did you order some movers for my belongings?" Eve asked.
"Movers?" Alex chuckled. "No, those are just my people whose families worked under my family for decades."
Alex grabbed Eve's wrist and pulled her closer, "Let's go now. I will surprise you with our new home."
Eve wasn't used to how arrogant and cold Alex was compared to Alex in her mind.
In her mind, he was a very down-to-earth man, who came from an even humbler beginning. He had nobody in this world and survived with scholarships and part-time jobs. Eve couldn't help but pity him.
Eve was dragged as they headed to the elevator. She stared at his wide shoulder, and for some reason, he felt familiar, yet unfamiliar at the same time.
'You are still the same man I've loved before. But why do you feel so unfamiliar, Alex,' Eve pondered. 'It hurts me knowing that I know nothing about your real self.'
Alex opened the car door for her and waited until she sat in before closing it. He sat in the driver's seat and drove out of the parking lot.
Eve clenched the seatbelt as she stared at the road. It felt even more unfamiliar because she remembered his car back then, an old Toyota from the 2000s. It was beat up, and he had to do a strange ritual just to make sure the old car would run.
But that old, beat-up Toyota was the proof of their love. It was the car that helped her to go through difficult times as they had to save up a lot to start their advertisement agency together, the Red Lass Agency.
Now, that humble, but sincere man wasn't driving his Toyota anymore. Instead, he drove a limited edition Bentley that was probably worth millions of dollars.
'So, which one is the true you? That beat-up Toyota Alex, or this limited edition Bentley Alex?' Eve asked in her heart. She tilted her head slightly towards the driver's seat next to her to look at Alex, and accidentally made eye contact with him.
She almost jolted in her seat as her heart skipped for a second. They maintained this eye contact for another second before they stopped at the red light.
Alex had been trying to start a conversation but failed to do so because he couldn't read what was on Eve's mind.
He was thinking about bringing that old, beat-up Toyota that he drove with Eve when they were dating. He wanted to reminisce about the good old days with her, but he was afraid that Eve would take it badly since he used that car to trick Eve into thinking that he was just a poor, but hardworking man who tried to survive in this harsh world.
Thus, he decided to use his limited edition Bentley, which he had never driven before. He wanted her to be the first to drive it together, hoping that Eve would be charmed by an expensive car.
"What do you think of this car? It's cool, isn't it?" Alex asked, silently hoping that Eve would be charmed by it.
"It's… in line with your real personality," Eve replied sarcastically. "Expensive, flashy, and a shameless rip-off."
Alex clenched the steering wheel.
Her words actually stung, because he went back and forth for hours through his car collections just to pick this one.
She might've forgotten about their dreams back then, but he vividly remembered how Eve said that she liked this particular car brand, because it looked so classy.
'Like what those old money people drive!' She said back then. 'Let's put this in our dream journal. One day, we can buy our luxury car, a limited edition one! Oh, but you need to be careful when driving it, alright? It'll be super expensive to fix.'
Alex's gaze softened whenever he recalled all of his sweet moments with Eve. She was like a midsummer daydream that he wished to never end. He didn't even care if he would be asleep for the rest of his life, as long as Eve wouldn't leave him.
