Ch6 - The First City
Chapter 6: The First City
Tachibana’s vision sped by at an incredible rate, with the wind tossing his hair about. The sensation of such swift movement was a rare thrill.
“Hold on tight, or it’ll be a hassle if you fall!” Luke’s voice rang out.
“Of course!” Tachibana replied enthusiastically.
After confirming the direction to the city with Luke, who said it would take “a few hours,” they set off with high spirits. However, even after walking for two hours, the forest around them hadn’t changed at all.
No wonder, Tachibana thought. Luke, being a Fenrir, could cover the distance in a few hours, but it would take Tachibana, a human, several days.
So, Luke kindly let him ride on his back.
With this arrangement, Tachibana felt confident they would reach the city soon.
A few hours later, they arrived at the city. To avoid startling the inhabitants with the sight of such a large Fenrir suddenly appearing, they decided to observe from a distance.
Luke had reduced his size to about a meter, similar to before.
“It’s a big city…” Tachibana remarked.
“Indeed, I believe it’s the second largest city in this country. It’s called ‘Relium,’” Luke said.
“The city of Relium,” Tachibana repeated.
Being the second largest city in the country, the roads were bustling with people. The surrounding area was a prairie, with farms and suburban houses to the west of the city. There was also a large outer wall with a gate leading into the city. The central area had a large building, making it look quite comfortable.
“It seems peaceful,” Tachibana mused.
Luke snorted with a “Hmph,” indicating that it was to be expected.
“This city has many adventurers and soldiers. With such good visibility, monsters are unlikely to attack often,” Luke explained.
“Really…” Tachibana was pleased.
In a world with monsters, a peaceful city was highly valuable to him. If he had been asked to live in a village with weak defenses, he would have vigorously refused.
(Plus, a fluffy café needs customers to thrive.)
In a large city like this, there would surely be people who wanted to relax in a café.
“Alright, let’s head into the city! I’m really tired and want to rest early today,” Tachibana said.
“Hmph, so weak!” Luke retorted, though his wagging tail suggested he was looking forward to the city as well.
They walked leisurely across the prairie and reached the city walls. The entrance was crowded with people, but the entry process seemed smooth.
Soon, it was Tachibana’s turn.
“Wow! You’re bringing a large dog… Is it dangerous?” a soldier at the gate inquired.
Tachibana nodded in response. “Of course not.”
(So, thanks to my skill, I can communicate with Luke, but to the soldiers, he probably just sounds like ‘woof.’)
He reassured the two soldiers that there were no issues with Luke.
“He’s tamed, so he follows my commands,” Tachibana said.
“Hm? Is he a wolf-type monster? If he’s tamed, there’s no problem. Just show me your identification, and you can enter the city,” the soldier said.
“Identification…” Tachibana broke into a cold sweat.
Although he had come to this world, he had no identification. Did people in this world receive identification documents at birth?
As Tachibana pondered, the soldier tilted his head, “Don’t have one?”
“If I don’t have identification, it will cost 5000 Chel to enter the city… What will you do?”
“Oh, let me check!” Tachibana said.
He sighed in relief and checked the contents of the magical bag given by the cat deity, wondering if it contained any money.
(I had food, but what about money? Chel is the currency, right?)
He found the word “wallet” in the list of items in the bag.
(This must be it!)
He took out the wallet and found three silver coins inside.
(There’s money, but I don’t know how much 5000 Chel is in silver coins…)
He couldn’t admit his lack of knowledge about money here, so he reluctantly showed the two silver coins he had.
He planned to gauge the soldiers’ reaction to determine the value of 5000 Chel.
“Oh, large silver coins. If that’s the case, I’ll prepare change. If you have silver coins, I’ll give you the exact amount,” the soldier said.
“Can I get change for this?” Tachibana asked.
“Sure.”
The soldier quickly gave Tachibana five smaller coins, indicating that they were worth 5000 Chel.
(So the coins I had were “large silver coins.”)
One large silver coin converted to five smaller silver coins. It seemed that one silver coin was worth 1000 Chel, and ten silver coins or one large silver coin was worth 10000 Chel.
“Uh, soldier, do you know of a good, affordable inn?” Tachibana asked.
“Well… If you go straight down this street and turn right at the Adventurers’ Guild, there’s an inn called ‘Crescent Moon Inn.’ It’s 4000 Chel per night and the food is good,” the soldier recommended.
“Thank you! I’ll check it out!” Tachibana said, relieved.
From the soldier’s response, it seemed that one Chel was roughly equivalent to one yen. Since this was a large city, prices might be lower in more remote areas.
(For the sake of the fluffy café, I need to do some market research too.)
He hoped for a variety of coffee and tea options. With these thoughts in mind, Tachibana stepped into the city of Relium.
