Chapter 42
When Jiang Shiyu and Shen Li first got together, they had many frictions. Their personalities were completely opposite—one was introverted, sensitive, easy to appease, and manipulable, while the other was flamboyant and unruly. Most of the time, Shen Li indulged and spoiled him, always following his preferences and opinions.
However, these were minor issues in their relationship. Besides, Jiang Shiyu’s soft personality meant that even if they disagreed, a few kind words from Shen Li would make him agree, somewhat dazed.
Their first serious argument occurred when Shen Li scheduled a basketball game with others. Someone from the opposing team, ignoring the rules, injured one of his teammates with a deliberate elbow, resulting in a fracture. Shen Li, who had recently come of age and was more unruly, immediately retaliated and fractured the opponent’s elbow in the same manner.
Unwilling to accept this, the opposing team issued a challenge to Shen Li the next day. Shen Li, dismissive and scornful, set out alone to meet them.
Just as he was about to leave, Jiang Shiyu intercepted him at the door, having seen the challenge letter on the desk. He, with red eyes, prevented Shen Li from going to the fight, fearing for his safety.
Shen Li, holding his beloved, comforted him and said that since the challenge had been issued to him, he had to go; otherwise, it would be an insult. Besides, he claimed the opponents were merely amateurs and not worth worrying about.
After much persuasion, Jiang Shiyu reluctantly let him go, still worried. By dinner time, he had not returned, and Jiang Shiyu received a call from the hospital.
When he arrived at the hospital, Shen Li had just finished stitching up a wound that was nearly ten centimeters long, deep enough to see the bone. Jiang Shiyu was so shocked he nearly collapsed at the door.
Shortly after, Bai Yun and Shen Qinglin also arrived. They busied themselves with paying fees and setting up IV drips. By the time they returned home, it was already night.
Bai Yun and Shen Qinglin had already scolded Shen Li on the way. Shen Li, ignoring them, collapsed onto the bed as soon as he got home.
“It hurts so much. Those bastards played dirty, bringing weapons. Next time I see them, they’ll regret it. Hey, baby, come here and let me hug you, it hurts so much.”
After his complaints, he extended his uninjured hand and opened his arms to Jiang Shiyu for a hug.
Jiang Shiyu hadn’t spoken a word since leaving the hospital. Now, sitting by the bed with his head down, he did not respond to his request.
Shen Li, noticing the change, immediately got out of bed and saw him silently crying in the chair.
“Little darling, what’s wrong? Why are you crying? It hurts my heart. Stop crying.”
He reached out to hug him, but Jiang Shiyu pushed him away with red eyes and a heavy nose, shouting, “I told you not to go this afternoon. Why didn’t you listen? Now you’re hurt and you feel proud. Are you happy now?”
It was rare for Jiang Shiyu, usually soft and easy to handle, to speak so harshly. Shen Li, intrigued, teased him, “Darling, even you are saying this. It makes me very sad. I took on six of them alone. If it weren’t for the leader sneaking in weapons, I would have knocked out all six of them. This is my victory mark.”
Seeing him still indifferent and casual, Jiang Shiyu stood up abruptly. “You always have excuses, never caring about others’ feelings or worries. If that’s the case, then enjoy your victory marks and sleep with them. I’m leaving.”
Jiang Shiyu, for once, stood his ground and had a cold war with him for half a month. Despite Shen Li’s efforts to reconcile, he remained unyielding, going to tutoring sessions every day with his backpack, not allowing Shen Li to escort him, and treating him like a stranger at home. Shen Li was so anxious that he almost wore out his tail.
Eventually, he prepared a fireworks surprise in the rooftop garden and wrote a sincere apology with a thousand-word guarantee letter, which finally led to Jiang Shiyu forgiving him.
As time passed, Shen Li paid a greater price for this lesson and learned a painful lesson, finally understanding those belated truths.
Jiang Shiyu stayed in the hospital until the end of the semester. He managed to attend the final exams in between. As soon as the winter vacation began, Bai Yun arranged a private plane to take him and Shen Li abroad for a comprehensive medical check-up.
Fortunately, his recovery in the hospital was going well, and all post-surgery indicators were normal. When Shen Li received the report, the tension that had been hanging over him for more than a month finally eased. He sat in the hospital corridor in a daze for half an hour while Jiang Shiyu sat beside him, pulling at a hard baguette.
When he came to, he saw Jiang Shiyu chewing the baguette, which only had minor surface damage.
He took the hard baguette from him and threw it into the trash can.
“Hey, why did you throw it away? I only took a couple of bites.” Jiang Shiyu, curious, wanted to try the baguette he had heard was delicious. They had queued to buy it before going to the hospital, but he regretted it after one bite.
“Don’t eat it; you’ll damage your teeth. It’s not as easy to fix teeth here as it is back home.”
Shen Li saw him still holding his cheek, pinched his cheek, and forced him to open his mouth. Inside, Jiang Shiyu’s small tongue lay quietly, trembling slightly from being forced open.
Shen Li’s gaze darkened as he examined Jiang Shiyu’s mouth and noticed only some redness on his gums before releasing him.
“Are you hungry? What do you want to eat?”
Jiang Shiyu, feeling his sore cheek, mumbled, “Hotpot.”
After over a month of bland hospital meals, Jiang Shiyu felt like he was about to become a monk. His large, dark eyes looked at Shen Li with innocence and appeal.
With this look, Shen Li couldn’t refuse him.
After leaving the hospital, they took a cab to Chinatown, finding a place with a Cantonese congee-based hotpot. When Jiang Shiyu saw the congee base being served, his face turned green.
During his hospital stay, he had mostly eaten congee due to being restricted to liquid food after the surgery. He hadn’t expected to still be served congee abroad.
Seeing his reaction, Shen Li quickly ran to the condiment station and made a bowl of flavorful dipping sauce, placing it in front of him. Jiang Shiyu looked at the three red chili rings in the sauce, his lips pouting in frustration.
Shen Li coaxed him until the hotpot base was ready, and promised to take him back to China for authentic Sichuan hotpot, which finally made him feel better.
Despite the Cantonese congee base looking plain, it was actually quite flavorful. Jiang Shiyu, though spoiled by Shen Li’s care, was usually quite affectionate and would cling to him, chatting non-stop while eating.
Watching him eating happily and his cheeks flushed with health, Shen Li thought that he could never leave him.
After dinner, he asked him if he wanted to go sightseeing or play somewhere, but Jiang Shiyu, who was usually very curious about new environments, shook his head and said he wanted to return to the hotel to rest.
Considering that he had just had surgery, the long flight, and the medical check-up, Shen Li agreed without arguing and took him back to the hotel.
They had booked a suite with three rooms, but Shen Li and Jiang Shiyu slept in the same room. The first thing they did when they returned to the hotel was to take medicine. Shen Li took out Jiang Shiyu’s medication from the suitcase, measured the doses, and handed them to him.
Jiang Shiyu looked at the white pills with a bitter face and swallowed them reluctantly.
After taking the medicine, Shen Li shoved a piece of milk candy into his mouth and leaned down to kiss him, the bitterness and sweetness mingling in their mouths. Jiang Shiyu tilted his head back, allowing the kiss.
Outside the window, the city lights flickered, and the street below was bustling. Inside the hotel, their intimacy was undisturbed.
This time, Shen Li’s kiss was not like before—brief or comforting. It was an outburst of pent-up emotions.
He had been holding back for too long. Whenever Jiang Shiyu was sick or recovering, he would withdraw immediately, afraid of causing any harm. Only after receiving the medical report indicating that everything was normal and his heart was functioning well did the mental restraint completely relax.
Jiang Shiyu had not experienced such intense kissing for a long time. It left him breathless, but he did not resist, his hands weakly resting on Shen Li’s shoulders.
Shen Li, like a beast freed from its chains, pressed Jiang Shiyu against the floor-to-ceiling window. Feeling the cold glass against his back, Jiang Shiyu suddenly became alert and saw the pedestrians below. His face turned crimson, his heart racing, but Shen Li did not care. He wrapped his arms around his waist, making their bodies stick closely together.
He felt Jiang Shiyu’s tension and finally pulled away. Panting, he looked at him, who was lying on the carpet, eyes half-closed, and his face still red.
“Are you okay?” Shen Li asked, his voice heavy.
Jiang Shiyu did not answer but stared at him with his head tilted back. His eyes were clear but still filled with lingering sweetness.
Shen Li, seeing him so content and well, began to feel guilty, and his lips grazed Jiang Shiyu’s forehead.
“Sorry, I was too impatient. I’ll be more gentle next time.”
Jiang Shiyu gave a slight nod, his expression shy but happy.
He wrapped him in a blanket, and Jiang Shiyu snuggled into his arms.
That night, both of them slept soundly, without any further disturbances.
