A Un-quirked Detective

Chapter 2: Footprint in the Mud

Noya was both pretty happy and annoyed that that there was a large footprint outside.

Happy because it speeds up his case.

Annoyed because now he was to go out in the rain to get a picture and make a cast.

But before he did that, he needed to finish checking the crime scene for any other pieces of evidence that could point towards someone being here.

Knowing what to do next he then checked the broken glass window. He looked on the insides and looked closely at one of the cracks.

There were marks on the inside of the glass starting at the side of the crack facing the building and sloping down to a right angle at the part facing outside.

'This hints that the force that broke the impact came from inside the building,' Noya thought before taking his notebook from his coat and writing it down.

Looking down at his feet he realized that he still had to collect the fallen glass and check it for any evidence that could point to who stole the pearls.

First collecting the big pieces of the glass as carefully as he could a placed them into a small plastic capsule.

Then, a small piece of cloth fell from one of the glass pieces.

Noya quickly picked it up and brought it up to his eyes. It was a small white piece, looking at the rip it didn't seem to come off easily.

"Do you happen to have a microscope in this place?" Noya asked Yaoyorozu.

"Yes," she answered, "There is a microscope on the fourth floor, you have to go back through the hallway turn left go through that hallway walk past the sowing room then head up to the elevator, oh yes you will need a key card to go up the elevator or if you want to take the stairs you will need a keycard as well then you will."

"Can you just show me where it is in a minute?" Noya asked not wanting to memorize all those directions.

"...Yes I can," Yaoyorozu responded.

"Now can you lead me back outside there's something that I need to do," Noya said, "And do have an umbrella?"

————————————————————————

Approaching the large footprint in the rain with an umbrella in hand Noya could take a closer look at the footprint.

It was over double in width and length to his own foot, and it looked like whoever did this had shoes on as well. But something was missing, where were the other footprints?

Noya then looked closer at surroundings and found the footprints leading away from the first one, but the other footprints were extremely shallow.

It was odd, so Noya made a note of it in his notebook.

Proceeding to do the thing he was in the rain to do, Noya took out a small container and pored the liquid into the container into the large footprint.

He then planted the umbrella in his hand into the mud, careful that he did it right. With the footprint cast drying, and hopeful dry while doing so, Noya headed back into the mansion.

"When do you think you'll be able to find the culprit?" Yaoyorozu asked closing the door after Noya entered.

"Depends," Noya answered, "Does your staff wear different clothes for different jobs?" Noya asked.

"Well of course," Yaoyorozu replied, "Each of our staff wear clothes specific to their occupations within the manor, do you think that it was someone who works here that stole my mother's pearls?" Yaoyorozu asked slightly offended.

"Yes," Noya said back.

"To steal from the people which are paying them," Yaoyorozu mumbled, "I believe that our workers would not do such a thing," she said with conviction.

"Do me a favor and don't grow up to be a judge," Noya responded, "Now about that microscope."

————————————————————————

Looking though the microscope Noya looked at the small piece of fabric that he found.

It very obviously wasn't organic, nor was it sewed together like normal fabric. Noya then took it off the microscope and gave it a good shake.

As he did that all the water that had gotten on it due to the rain outside fell off. It was left completely dry.

'Hydrophobic, is it?' Noya thought placing the small cloth back into his pocket.

"How much longer do you think it will take you to find the culprit?" Yaoyorozu asked leaning in to see what Noya was doing.

"Not too long, now can you take me back to the room of the crime?" Noya asked.

————————————————————————

Once again in the scene of the crime Noya walked towards the pedestal which once had the pearls on top of them. He then took out a magnifying glass and took a look around the pedestal.

Quickly, he found some fingerprints placed around the pedestal. Taking out a piece of tape he took up the fingerprints.

"Now," Noya said gaining the attention of Yaoyorozu, "Can you gather on of each group of workers and a glass of water?"

"Yes, give me one moment and stay here," Yaoyorozu said exiting the room, "Could have said please," she mumbled.

After a moment, four different people along with Yaoyorozu walked through the door.

"Here is your water," one of the five people came up to him with the water in his hand and a very fancy black and white suit on his body.

"Thanks," Noya said before putting his hand in the glass and splashing some water on the man.

"But why?" the man responded now slightly wet.

"Cause," Noya said back, "What's your job?" he then asked.

"Estate manager," he said giving Noya an odd look, "May I leave to continue my job?" he then asked.

"Of course," Noya replied, "Next!" he then said.

"Jerk," the estate manager said before leaving through the door.

"Hello there!" a jolly man with a black apron said walking up to Noya, "I am one of the chiefs of this place," he said with a wide smile.

"Nice to meet you," Noya replied splashing more water onto the man getting water onto his clothes and apron.

The water dropped of the apron leaving it dry, but the clothes were still wet.

"Ah, I hoped you wouldn't do that," the chef replied, his smile slightly diminished, "May I go?" he questioned.

"One quick question," Noya said, "Does every chief wear that type of apron?" he asked.

"Yes, it is our style!" the chief said with flair, his smile coming back.

"You're fine to leave," Noya then said, "Next!"

"Please don't get me too wet," a girl said walking towards Noya in a white uniform.

"I'll see what I can do," he said back throwing water at the girl.

The water slid right off her clothes leaving them dry, though he wasn't sure if the girl realized this.

"Where do you work?" Noya asked.

"I'm one of the cleaners, may I leave?" she asked in a hushed tone.

"Wait here for a moment," Noya replied, "I need you to do something for me," he said, "NEXT."

"Helo there," a woman in a black and white dress said walking up to Noya, "I am the laundress of the house, please let's get this over with," she said with a straight face.

"Thank you for your seriousness," Noya said back, splashing her with water.

As she got wet, she did not flinch. Not even a twitch of the eye.

"Is this all?" the laundress said plainly.

"Yes, you may leave," Noya said back.

She gave a bow and left leaving the nervous cleaner, Noya, and Yaoyorozu is the room alone.

"So," the cleaner said, "What do you need me to do?" she asked.

"I need you to gather the rest of the cleaners and meet me here," he said.

"Yes sir," she said nervously.

Hoping she knew that was happening, Yaoyorozu stayed quiet.

————————————————————————

Four people came into the room.

The first was the girl who Noya first talked to, she was holder her hands together and shifting them back and forth.

Secondly a very large orange and black tiger man walked through the door behind the girl. He was slightly nervous but seemed to more confused than worried. He wore large gloves on over his paws.

Behind the tiger man came a man who didn't even notice Noya, because he was dead staring at the man in front of him with a stare that could only be defined as disgust.

And finally came a man who seemed to float on the air. The bottom of his shoes had no wear on it.

"So," Noya whispered to Yaoyorozu, "What can you tell me about their quirks," Noya asked.

"She has the quirk to create bubbles, he has a mutant quirk that turns into a tiger and half's his weight, he is quirkless, and finally his quirk allows him to control the air around him," Yaoyorozu says pointing to each of the people.

'I wonder if he was thrown in a dumpster as well?'

"Hmm," he hummed while he thought.

He looked between the for people and thought about which one could have done it.

Noya then looked at his notebook and compared it to the suspects, before coming to a conclusion.

"Can you come with me for a moment?" Noya asked walking in front of one of them.
