Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Attack 2
Gyomei walked quickly through the corridors, from time to time he prevented someone from being crushed by debris, either destroying it with his flail or removing people who were trapped beneath it.
Occasionally Gyomei also tried to reduce the flames, his approach was simple, as the water could not put out this fire, he just crushed the object that caught fire with his flail.
And this method proved surprisingly effective, with the wooden beams that had been destroyed no longer catching fire.
So he continued at his hurried pace, trying to find the people causing all this chaos.
But it didn't cost him much effort, as one of those causes took the initiative to appear.
Her long black hair fell down her back, a fringe framing her face with the flame-shaped demonic mark and her six eyes.
His red kimono and black hakama swayed slightly in the warm breeze that blew.
His cold eyes fixed on Gyomei, and then he drew his sword.
"I was told that you are strongest among the hashiras." He commented, putting himself in a combat stance, his many eyes fixed on Gyomei, watching him intensely.
"And you would be?" Even with his blind eyes, Gyomei seemed able to see Kokushibo's imposing posture, he paid attention, readying his flail for combat.
"Kokushibo, Upper Moon 1." Announced Kokushibo, before attacking ferociously, swinging his sword in a horizontal slash.
A large number of moons ran frantically towards Gyomei, who despite being blind quickly reacted and moved out of range of the blades, which hit the ground, causing wood and earth to scatter everywhere.
Catching this short window of time, Gyomei swung his flail, the large spiked ball being thrown towards Kokushibo.
Clang!
The sound of metallic collision rang out and sparks were scattered as Kokushibo's katana met Gyomei's flail.
"You will still need to increase your strength if you want to hurt me." Kokushibo sneered, throwing the spiked ball back at Gyomei, who reciprocated by attacking with his ax in hand.
Standing in place like an imposing pillar, Gyomei handled his flail with expert mastery, his hands holding the chain firmly, swinging the ax and stopping the movement of the thorny ball.
Notably, Gyomei is the definition of pillar, which most fits the Hashira position (pillar in Japanese), and Kokushibo is exactly the demonic moon that the name kizuki refers to.
In other words, this can be considered the final battle between Kizuki and Hashira.
"I will do it!" Gyomei responded, attacking wildly, he propelled the thorny ball vertically, making a semicircular movement from top to bottom towards Kokushibo.
The force of gravity added to Gyomei's strength, increasing the energy of the thorny ball dramatically.
"You're not fast enough either." Kokushibo commented, easily dodging the attack launched at him by Gyomei.
The ground shattered and pieces flew, but still, none of them were able to hit Kokushibo.
The speed of demons is often simply unattainable for humans.
"But you are still a formidable fighter, what do you think about becoming a demon and retaining your physical capabilities?" Kokushibo offered, his love for skilled warriors couldn't be hidden, and even though Gyomei wasn't marked and couldn't use the red blade, he's still formidable.
"Your offer is nothing more than an insult to me, becoming a demon slayer is accepting death at any moment and I could never commit the atrocities you commit." Gyomei angrily repudiated, the mere thought of such an occurrence causing him disgust.
"Funny to hear that from someone who crushes heads with a giant flail." Kokushibo scoffed upon hearing those words.
Hearing these words Gyomei just remained silent before continuing to attack fiercely.
He knew that Kokushibo was right, and he also felt sadness at committing such violence.
But to prevent what happened to the children at his orphanage from happening again, he would fight to the death.
So he continued swinging his flail, even if he died in the end, he would be satisfied as long as he killed Kokushibo.
Sparks constantly erupted as the collision between the weapons became bigger and bigger, the metal gradually turning bright red.
...Not that Kokushibo's katana is metal.
The intense collisions increased the nearby temperature, no surrounding buildings remained standing, plants were uprooted and rocks were constantly crushed.
In the heat of battle, Kokushibo's arm was hit, turning him into a cloud of blood, unfortunately for Gyomei, that arm quickly regenerated and only made Kokushibo more excited.
'Even if it's just a little, he's managing to make my blood boil' Kokushibo thought, against Lucian he could only be one-sidedly crushed.
Against Gyomei, even though they both didn't have the same level of strength, he was still able to stay close, making Kokushibo excited.
Lunar blades flew, leaving several cuts along Gyomei's body.
With each passing second, Gyomei weakened, while Kokushibo became more and more excited.
The injuries and fatigue began to take their toll on Gyomei, who is only a mortal human.
'No! I can't fall without taking him with me, otherwise everything will be in vain, all the effort... all the lives that were sacrificed...' he thought, as he pushed himself to the limit.
He knew that this would be the last combat of this long war, and if he was able to eliminate one of the strongest on the enemy side, it would be of great help to all his companions, to his master and to all humans.
His heart pounded, as resounding as a drum, his teeth clenched so tightly they could break, as he resisted his injuries and forced his body to remain standing.
Then his movements became faster, more powerful and fluid, as marks similar to cracks appeared on his forearms.
He had managed to awaken the slayer's mark at this critical moment!
Thus becoming the first demon slayer to possess the slayer's mark in this generation!
"Oh! You were able to get the mark, it makes everything more fun!" exclaimed Kokushibo, his mark also activating.
With each passing moment the combat between them only intensified, both were now using the transparent world, the blows becoming even more precise and deadly.
