Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Attack
Three days after Lucian and his wives went to Hokkaido to enjoy the hot springs.
On this day the night was dark, the stars were hidden by thick layers of clouds and even the full moon, which should have been shining in all its splendor, was only faintly visible.
The dense forest, which is normally noisy with the walking of some animals and the sound of crickets, was now strangely silent.
As if the animals feared something and remained quiet, hiding from the imminent danger.
"Tonight is very strange." Commented a man, in uniform and with a sword at his waist, he was patrolling nearby.
Looking into the distance, he was only able to see a light mist and a deep darkness, such as was unusual even on new moon nights.
Combined with the unsettling silence that hung over the surroundings, it made him feel chills running down his spine.
He knows that his job is dangerous, dealing with supernatural beings is incredibly difficult and the risk of injury and death is extremely high.
On this unusual night he felt that something was wrong...
...And he was right, his guesses were confirmed when a loud sound broke the silence.
Boom!
An explosion was heard, flames rose, bringing a little light to the dark night, and as if it were a signal, several other explosions followed.
Boom! Boom!
Alarms and screams began to sound everywhere, soon he ran and joined one of the large flows of people running to react to the attack.
Then they were caught in a torrent of fire, many dying instantly, or they fell to the ground, agonizing in their last moments, a shame that in the situation the base found itself in no one would arrive to help them.
And, the man, like the others, would probably be forgotten.
"How did you get all these bombs into the Demon Slayer Corps base?" Daki asked, looking at the houses that were bathed in flames, even though she was far away she could still feel the hot air rushing towards her.
"Do you remember Uzui Tengen? I used him to plant these bombs" Lucian replied, while admiring the grandiose rain of fire he had prepared.
Besides them, Kokushibo, Akaza, Gyutaro and Kie were also watching.
Even though unlike others who have high combat power, Kie was still weak, Lucian had brought her so that she could strengthen her heart.
Sooner or later she would see such scenes, so it would be better to prepare her from the beginning.
He wasn't afraid of her being in danger, 5 hashiras against 4 upper moons and the demon king, so there wasn't much suspense in who would win.
If you wonder why there are 5 hashiras, we will do a count.
In the original work, there are 9 hashiras, but this period is 2 years earlier: Muichiro Tokito, the youngest of the 9 hashiras, was 14 years old, and it had taken him 2 months to become a hashira, so at the moment he is still only 12 years old and never picked up a sword;
Mitsuri Kanroji and Shinobu Kocho had become demons and Lucian's women;
Uzui Tengen had also been transformed into a demon, including the one who had placed the bombs that were scattered throughout the Demon Slayers Corps base, so it was certainly impossible for him to return to the sides of the demon slayers.
At this point he should be far away.
Of course, Kie was shaken by hearing the screams that sounded relentlessly.
The bombs had been detonated gradually in a circular shape expanding from the initial explosion.
After the first explosion attracted several slayers, the second explosion detonated, inflicting extensive damage on those who came to the aid of the first to be injured.
This process was repeated a few times, until there were no people trying to help the injured, and if there were, those who remained would know that approaching them would be foolish.
The morale of the demon slayers was low, they hadn't even had a chance to see what would attack them and they had already suffered serious casualties.
Those weak of spirit were already beginning to despair upon observing the scene that was similar to hell. Their eyes soon shed tears as they saw their friends and companions being engulfed by the red flames.
They agonized as his skin was slowly charred, their faces already disfigured, their hair burned and respiratory tract damaged.
So with no choice, they were just able to lie on the ground, feeling the pain that filled their bodies and drove their minds crazy, leaving nothing but despair and regret in their hearts weakened by the blood that boiled in the veins of these poor things.
"How did you make these bombs?" Daki asked curiously, observing the terrible crimson fire and the pitiful state of those affected.
"Nitroglycerin and blood" Lucian replied, "I purified glycerol to obtain glycerin and then did the nitration to obtain nitroglycerin. So I let a family member make the impact to explode the nitroglycerin, and in the explosion a large amount of blood was sprayed."
This explained why the flames were so voracious and possessed certain supernatural capabilities - they will burn for many hours and will not be extinguished by normal means. "Nitroglycerin..." Even though she got an answer, Daki remained confused.
"That's right, Tengen must have suffered a lot to move all of this" Lucian said, laughing as he imagined the scene, after all nitroglycerin is highly unstable and will explode if there is any impact.
On the other side, in a highly protected room.
"Master Ubuyashiki, what will we do?" a demon slayer asked desperately, the hell-like scene had left him terrified.
"This fire is not normal, warn everyone to stay away and... will not be possible to rescue those who were badly hit." Kagaya Ubuyashiki, who was almost completely blind, gave the orders.
The demon slayer nodded and quickly left to carry out the orders.
Even though he maintained a calm appearance, anyone with discerning eyes could see how affected he was.
But his biggest concern...
'Who would do that? Muzan? But he never showed initiative in attacking the Demon Slayer Corps, and that doesn't seem like his modus operandi'
'First Mitsuri lost contact, then Shinobu and three days ago Tengen also lost contact, now this attack happens... it's impossible for these things not to be related.' He analyzed.
He could sense that something in the demons' chain of command might have changed, but he didn't know what. One of the few things that brought him comfort was how lucky all the remaining hashiras were at the base that night.
But was it really luck?
"Gyomei, go support them" Kagaya said, the situation was very critical and only someone like a hashira could help.
"But I need to stay here to protect him." Gyomei Himejima objected, what if he didn't protect his master and the demons attacked him?
"Go, Sanemi will be able to protect me" Kagaya said, pointing to Sanemi Shinazugawa who was at the side.
While the other hashiras had already run in search of the enemies.
"... All right." After hesitating a bit, Gyomei nodded, leaving the meeting room.
