Chapter 8:
Chapter 8: Humble Love 8:
Deep down, Zhang Ya was very sensitive about her family background.
Coming from such a poor family was a source of shame for her.
It made her feel inferior.
As for Chen Nuo, he made her feel even more resentful.
She had always believed that being with him was a huge sacrifice on her part.
And now, Li Jun had the audacity to say she relied on her boyfriend.
And those contemptuous looks from everyone in the office!
All of it fueled the flames of hatred in Zhang Ya’s heart.
“What nonsense am I saying?”
Seeing Zhang Ya shout at him, Li Jun’s face turned cold.
He thought this woman truly couldn’t see reality.
Did she think she was still the same as before?
Remembering the phone call from the chairman’s assistant, Li Jun no longer held back.
“In any case, you’ll be doing all the interns’ work.”
He stated firmly.
“Impossible! Don’t even think about it!”
Zhang Ya’s expression darkened as she glared at Li Jun with resentment.
“You’ll regret this!”
With those words, she turned to the group leaders.
“Let’s go. We’ll eat first.”
“Actually, I just remembered I have something to do at noon. We’ll eat another day.”
“Yes, I need to get home to make lunch for my child. Let’s reschedule.”
The group leaders who had been fawning over Zhang Ya just moments ago now found excuses to refuse her invitation.
“Fine. Just great.”
Zhang Ya’s expression grew darker. She hadn’t expected the group leaders who had always flattered her to reject her now.
“You’ll all regret this!”
She spat out, then turned and stormed out of the office.
She planned to call Chen Nuo to have him handle this.
She wanted everyone from the supervisor to the group leaders and the colleagues who had mocked her gone from the company.
As Zhang Ya reached the stairwell, she pulled out her phone and dialed Chen Nuo’s number.
In her rage, she completely ignored—or perhaps dismissed—Li Jun’s mention of their breakup.
After all, in Zhang Ya’s mind, she had always had Chen Nuo wrapped around her finger.
…
Meanwhile, Chen Nuo and his parents had finished their meal and were chatting in the restaurant.
“Xiao Nuo, why don’t you take a vacation for a while?”
Chen’s mother suggested, her concern evident.
“Yes, go out and relax for a bit.”
Chen Zhongguo agreed.
Both of them hoped a trip would help their son clear his mind and forget about Zhang Ya.
“Mom, Dad, it’s really not necessary.”
Chen Nuo smiled, feeling a bit helpless. He was no longer the submissive person he used to be.
“Well, then maybe we can introduce you to someone. I’ll see if any of my friends have daughters around your age.”
Chen’s mother pondered aloud, then turned to her husband.
“Husband, you should check with your colleagues and students too—anyone who seems suitable, as long as they’re a good person.”
“Of course.”
Chen Zhongguo nodded without hesitation. The couple exchanged a glance, both determined to find a good partner for their son this time.
Chen Nuo, sitting across from them, saw the sincerity in their eyes. He wanted to speak up but decided against it. He knew they only wanted the best for him.
“Let’s go home.”
Seeing that Chen Nuo didn’t object, his parents smiled. Chen Zhongguo stood up.
“Let’s go.”
Chen Nuo followed suit, but just as they were about to leave, his phone rang in his pocket.
He saw that it was a call from Zhang Ya.
“Mom, Dad, don’t worry—I’ve got this.”
Reassuring his suddenly tense parents, Chen Nuo answered the call and put it on speaker.
“Chen Nuo, call your uncle right now and have him fire our department’s supervisor and a few other people!”
As soon as the call connected, Zhang Ya’s commanding tone came through, as if she were ordering a servant.
Hearing this, both Chen Zhongguo and his wife’s faces darkened.
It was the first time they had heard Zhang Ya speak like this.
In front of them, she had always acted like she cared deeply for their son.
Although they had always suspected it was an act—and their son had confirmed her true nature—hearing it firsthand was still infuriating.
Chen’s mother reached for the phone.
“Trust Xiao Nuo. If he says he can handle it, he will.”
Chen Zhongguo gently held her arm and whispered.
With great effort, she calmed her anger.
“That’s not going to happen.”
Chen Nuo spoke into the phone, his tone firm.
“What? Chen Nuo, what do you mean? Don’t you want to marry me anymore? Let me tell you, I’ve suffered a lot being with you. You have to fire all those people, or there won’t be any wedding!”
In the stairwell, Zhang Ya was stunned by his rejection.
Chen Nuo had always complied with her every unreasonable demand.
But now, he had refused so decisively?
Her anger flared, but she quickly sneered and resorted to her usual threat of calling off the wedding.
She believed he would panic and beg for her forgiveness, just as he always had.
After all, she knew how desperately Chen Nuo wanted to marry her.
