You Are Deep in The Stars

Chapter 34 - Aladdin’s Magic Lamp, Mr. Han II

Meanwhile, Zhao Xiaojuan sat on the sofa, gazing at piles of baby clothes and toys before her, all purchased by Wu Zigang. In his words, there was still a 5% chance the child would be healthy. If so, they would need these pink cartoon items. If, unfortunately, it was the other 95%…

“If the baby isn’t healthy, this will be something you’ll grieve over,” Wu Zigang held her hand, a familiar glint in his eyes, sincere yet also distant and calculating. “But for our species and our future, it might actually be a good thing. It means a lot, you know?”

Zhao Xiaojuan remained silent, repeating softly, “I want to see Daisy.”

Though aware of the other’s true identity, she yearned to see her, needing a friend to pull her from this boundless pain and fog—even if just to feel the warmth of her presence.

Wu Zigang sighed deeply. “I’ll let you see her. In fact, I must let you see her, even if I didn’t want to. Mrs. Daisy is well-known, and Han Zhuo, the executioner— the third laboratory can’t afford such enemies.”

Zhao Xiaojuan didn’t respond, sitting quietly in the living room. It wasn’t until the doorbell rang that a glimmer of life returned to her eyes, normally dull as dead fish.

“Oh my, why do you look so weary?” Daisy whispered as she entered, enveloping Zhao Xiaojuan in a gentle embrace and patting her softly. “Are you alright?”

Zhao Xiaojuan’s body finally relaxed, tears streaming down her face for the first time in days.

Han Zhuo patted Wu Zigang on the shoulder, gesturing for him to head to the study first.

“Why not listen to Xiaojuan’s thoughts first?” Wu Zigang suggested.

“Do you think you still need to listen?” Han Zhuo shook his head. “I don’t think it’s necessary.”

Wu Zigang frowned, glancing at his daughter once more, but Bai Xi stood in front of him, blocking his view.

“Promise me not to be deceived by anyone, not even me or anyone else close to you,” Daisy handed her a tissue. “Dr. Wu may be right that you have a chance of having a healthy child, but it’s definitely not 5%, more like 0.5%, or even less.”

“But what if…” Zhao Xiaojuan bit her lower lip.

“You’re a mother, and you have to be responsible for your child. Being responsible isn’t just about giving birth,” Daisy sighed. “If he’s really unhealthy, have you thought about how he’ll live in the future? Even if the child isn’t taken away by Dr. Wu, can you care for him for his entire life? Keep him hidden, avoid being hunted by Huang Jingyuan or others?”

Zhao Xiaojuan sobbed hoarsely.

“Believe in yourself. You’ll have many children in the future,” Daisy comforted. “Maybe this little life will come back to you later on, but first, you need to clear your head and stay strong.”

Zhao Xiaojuan choked out a nod. “Okay.”

After hearing her daughter’s decision, Wu Zigang fell into a long silence.

“I hope you can keep your promise,” Daisy reminded. “At least be a responsible father.”

“Okay.” Wu Zigang’s expression stiffened, but he nodded reluctantly. “For you, Madam.”

“It’s for your daughter, doctor,” Daisy corrected, checking the time. “When do you plan to schedule the procedure?”

Wu Zigang hesitated.

“Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock. I’ll accompany Xiaojuan personally,” Daisy announced. “How about at the Municipal People’s Hospital?”

“No!” Wu Zigang refused adamantly. “She can’t go to a regular hospital.”

Zhao Xiaojuan instinctively moved closer to Daisy.

“Explain,” Daisy demanded coldly, staring him down.

The room grew tense and silent, the atmosphere thickening. It felt like an eternity passed before Wu Zigang finally sighed deeply, his voice hoarse and barely audible. “The embryo is degenerating. The child is growing, but there seems to be no fluid transporting nutrients to it.”

At this revelation, Zhao Xiaojuan’s face turned deathly pale. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed heavily onto the sofa.

Bai Xi was shocked. Was this the latest outcome of the underground warehouse’s research? A zombie-like existence?

“I can arrange the surgery,” Wu Zigang said, picking up the phone with trembling hands. “But this is still for you, Madam. I hope both you and Mr. Han can see my sincerity. Giving up this child is crucial for the Third Laboratory, and losing him would be a significant blow to all superpowers.”

Bai Xi stared at the middle-aged man before him in horror. In some ways, he found him even more terrifying than Shi Tian and Huang Jingyuan—the underground warehouse at least knew their actions were wrong, violating laws and morals. Wu Zigang, on the other hand, was entirely immersed in what he believed was a noble cause. His self-righteous sense of glory and mission blinded him to reason, making him see all bloodshed, cruelty, and ethical violations as necessary sacrifices on his path.

“Tomorrow morning at ten o’clock, Benin Clinic,” Wu Zigang concluded the call. “I’ll arrange everything.”

“Tomorrow morning at ten o’clock at my clinic,” across town, a doctor in a white coat studied his screen intently. “As unbelievable as it sounds, Dr. Wu seems intent on terminating that child. Mr. Shi, how much do you think this information is worth?”

“At least seven figures,” Shi Tian hung up the phone and smirked at Huang Jingyuan. “Looks like we’ll have to visit the clinic ourselves tomorrow to bring your wayward wife back home.”
