Chapter 6 - East City
Yang Shifei sat shirtless on the edge of the bed, feeling increasingly groggy, his eyes gradually closing.
Vaguely, apart from the flickering lights in the room, there was also a dark figure moving back and forth.
And behind him, it seemed like sharp blades were cutting through his clothes, extending like tentacles toward the surroundings—
..
Yang Shifei woke up with a start, feeling as if he had just had a nightmare, sweat beading on his forehead.
Was that….just a dream?
“When did the young master learn martial arts?”
A cold female voice sounded beside him, causing Yang Sifei to come to his senses, turning to look at the maid, Tan Xiang, who was helping him apply medicine.
Her cold face seemed untouched by cosmetics, yet it was extremely fair and radiant, her beautiful eyes staring directly at him, with a hint of scrutiny.
“Uh, I’m not really sure.”
Yang Shifei rubbed his forehead. “For some reason, my body has become very strong these past two days. Just now, when I was fighting with the assassin, I was purely relying on brute force.”
As he spoke, he winced and quickly looked at his right arm, which was throbbing with pain.
The wound that had been cut by the knife was now wrapped in gauze, with a hint of red seeping through.
He realized that Tan Xiang must have bandaged him while he was still dizzy.
“Thank you, Miss Tan Xiang.”
“Your body looks frail, but it’s actually very tough and resilient.”
Tan Xiang was applying ointment to his left arm as she spoke coldly. “Although there are many abrasions, most of them will heal in a few days. Even the knife wound on your arm only grazed the skin and didn’t reach the bone. You’ll be able to move around freely in half a month.”
Yang Shifei smiled. “That’s more than enough.”
He also felt quite emotional. In the past, even a scratch would have made him grimace in pain, but now he could joke around as if nothing had happened.
Images of the battle flashed through his mind again, recalling the dull sensation of smashing the opponent’s facial bones with his fists. He felt a slight discomfort, but that was it.
He didn’t know if his mentality had changed or if the influence of that cold sensation hadn’t disappeared yet.
But what he could confirm was that this mysterious cold energy had greatly strengthened his physique and even brought extraordinary senses and intuition. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been able to defeat the assassin last night.
“I’ll apply the medicine to my injuries myself.”
Yang Shifei put away his thoughts, took the medicine bottle from her hand, and said seriously, “You all need to be more careful. There’s a group of people intending to harm the Luo Mansion.”
Tan Xiang stood up, avoiding eye contact. “Mo Li has already interrogated the assassin. He’s from the Feilin Gang.”
“Already interrogated?” Yang Shifei was somewhat surprised as he applied the medicine.
“This person was scared out of his wits by you, so he spilled everything with just a little questioning.” Tan Xiang said calmly, “He was instructed by the Feilin Gang to investigate the details of the Luo Mansion. If given the chance, they would have taken the heads of everyone in our mansion.”
Yang Shifei frowned upon hearing this. “What deep-seated grudge do they hold?”
He had heard a little about this gang in the past few days.
It seemed they were located in the outskirts of East City, and although they were doing well in business there, they also had a presence in East City itself. The Yellow Crane Tower he had planned to visit earlier seemed to have some connection with the Feilin Gang.
“It’s just a business conflict.” Tan Xiang walked to the side and began tidying up the various medicine bottles on the table.
“You should have heard from the young lady that we have a business in East City. It’s probably because of this that we’ve had some conflicts with the Feilin Gang. We just didn’t expect them to send people to take action directly, which is really going too far.”
“And it’s quite coincidental.”
“Yeah. The young master had only just arrived at the Luo Mansion for a couple of days when they sent someone.” Tan Xiang turned to look at him. “And the reason they acted was also because of you.”
“Me?” Yang Shifei looked surprised.
Tan Xiang nodded slightly. “They probably thought that the Luo Mansion had heard about the rumors in advance and deliberately hired you, an unknown helper. So they wanted to test the waters. If there wasn’t much resistance, they would have attacked directly. If there was a strong opponent, they would have retreated and planned further.”
Yang Shifei’s mouth twitched upon hearing this.
How sinister.
Perhaps the black-clothed man had been sizing up his martial arts skills while they were arguing in the tree.
Once he was sure, he decisively drew his blade.
“However, I must thank young master for intervening in time.” Tan Xiang closed the medicine box and said calmly, “Thanks to you, we and the young lady were able to avoid disaster.”
Yang Shifei could only smile wryly at her words.
He wasn’t sure if the people at the Luo Mansion really had extraordinary abilities. If they did, his actions tonight might have been unnecessary.
“What are you planning to do next?” Yang Shifei put his robe back on and returned the medicine bottle to the box. “Since the Feilin Gang has sent someone, they will know about the situation by tomorrow at the latest.”
“No need to worry, the young lady will make her decision.” Tan Xiang picked up the medicine box and turned to leave. “Young master just needs to rest and recover here. If there’s anything you need, just call me.”
As the maid closed the door behind her, Yang Shifei pondered for a moment. He wasn’t going to act on his own.
Compared to him, the young lady of the Luo family should have a clearer understanding of the situation.
Moreover—
Yang Shifei squeezed his left hand. Although his physical fitness had rapidly improved, he could clearly feel the coldness dissipating within his body.
“Is it a one-time consumable?”
He temporarily couldn’t figure out the ins and outs of it, feeling the fatigue and exhaustion resurfacing, so he decided not to force himself any longer and fell into a deep sleep.
…
It was almost noon.
Yang Shifei had a long overdue sleep. After getting up and washing, he quietly listened to the movements in the courtyard.
After the events of last night, it seemed that things had returned to calm today?
“Young master.”
Tan Xiang’s gentle voice came from nearby.
Yang Shifei had just finished dressing when he turned to see the young maid carrying a steaming lunch along the corridor.
“I saw you just woke up, so I reheated it for you. Eat while it’s hot.”
“Thank you, miss.” Yang Shifei chuckled. “I woke up a bit late today.”
“Young master was injured last night, so it’s normal to feel sleepy.” Tan Xiang laid out the dishes on the stone table in the backyard and said softly, “Today’s meal will be lighter. Please don’t mind, young master.”
“With you taking care of me so attentively, I can barely eat two extra bowls of rice.” Yang Shifei smiled and picked up the bowl, contentedly enjoying the dishes laid out on the table.
Compared to the meals in Niu Village, even if the meals at the Luo Mansion were ‘lighter,’ they were still delicious and homely. There was no need to be picky.
“…”
Tan Xiang sat down opposite him, her gaze calm.
Yang Shifei slowed down his eating motion, feeling a bit embarrassed. “Is there something on my face?”
“Just a bit surprised.” Tan Xiang blinked her bright eyes. “You’re recovering faster than I expected. The bruises on your face have already faded.”
“It’s probably thanks to the ointment you gave me.” Yang Shifei laughed and decided not to reveal the matter of the cold energy for now. After all, their relationship wasn’t that close yet, and it didn’t hurt to keep some secrets.
But he quickly thought about how he had absorbed the coldness from the mysterious girl yesterday, and wondered if Tan Xiang would be able to—
“What’s on young master’s mind?”
“Cough!” Yang Shifei quickly swallowed his food and chuckled. “Just in the past couple of days, being new here, I didn’t have the leisure to look around much. It’s only today that I realized how beautiful Miss Tan Xiang is.”
“Thank you.”
Tan Xiang’s face showed neither joy nor sorrow, and there was hardly any emotional fluctuation.
This made Yang Shifei feel a little awkward.
Clearly looking like a teenager of sixteen or seventeen, her temperament was surprisingly cold.
“Oh, right.”
Yang Shifei quickly changed the subject. “Any progress on last night’s incident?”
“Miss Luo and the others have already gone to the authorities,” Tan Xiang’s lips moved slightly. “The Luo family has some connections in the government. Although they may not completely eradicate the Feilin Gang, at least they can give those bandits a good beating.”
Yang Shifei felt relieved after hearing this, and even the rice in his bowl seemed tastier.
Even if the Feilin Gang was domineering, they wouldn’t dare to act recklessly under the watchful eyes of the authorities.
Although the rich lady could be intimidating, she was quite reliable at this time.
“After you finish eating, I’ll take you to the town,” Tan Xiang said.
“Huh?” Yang Shifei looked surprised.
Tan Xiang remained calm. “Since Miss is not here today, I can’t let you stay alone at home. Besides, you’ve been looking for a suitable job these past two days, and I can also help with recommendations.”
Yang Shifei was overjoyed, as he was lacking a familiar ‘intermediary’ in the area.
He quickly finished his meal, helped with the dishes, and then left the Luo Mansion with Tan Xiang.
…
At noon, the streets of the East City were bustling.
There was a constant flow of carriages and people, with vendors shouting and selling their wares, and smoke rising from cooking.
Yang Shifei looked around curiously. “Where are you taking me, miss?”
“To the Clear Moon Pavilion,” Tan Xiang said softly. “It’s a restaurant that Miss bought a while ago and has been operating ever since, with decent business.”
Yang Shifei clicked his tongue in amazement.
He wondered how much money it had cost.
“So, is it because of the Clear Moon Pavilion that the Feilin Gang harbors ill intentions towards the Luo Mansion?”
“Perhaps,” Tan Xiang nodded slightly, her pace unwavering.
As they walked, Yang Shifei observed the bustling street scenes, with many lively stalls along the way.
The East City, being the capital of the mountain province, was located centrally, and it was a blend of cuisine from both north and south. It was quite rare to see so many delicacies from other provinces on the streets.
“Watch out!”
Yang Sifei quickly grabbed Tan Xiang’s shoulder to steer her away from a speeding carriage, while pedestrians nearby exclaimed and cursed.
“Will the authorities not intervene in such matters?” he asked softly.
Tan Xiang glanced at him and whispered, “Where there’s wealth or power, they won’t intervene much.”
Yang Shifei smiled helplessly; it seemed to be the way of every world. He quickly withdrew his gaze and silently squeezed his left hand, which had just been resting on Tan Xiang’s shoulder.
Unlike the encounter with the other girl, there was no cold sensation upon first touch. Did he need to silently recite ‘bite her’ like before to absorb the cold energy?
Yang Shifei pondered for a moment, deciding to suppress the urge to experiment for now. Maybe he should wait and observe a bit longer.
..
After walking along the street for a few miles, they arrived at the entrance of a restaurant. Yang Shifei looked up and admired the elegant decoration of the building, which perfectly embodied the atmosphere of a ‘clear moon.’
“It might be a bit noisy inside since business is booming,” Tan Xiang said as she entered the restaurant confidently, heading straight for the counter.
Passing by a couple of waiters along the way, who nodded respectfully upon seeing Tan Xiang, it was clear they knew her status.
Yang Sifei was a bit puzzled, thinking she might want to introduce him to the manager of the Clear Moon Pavilion.
“Oh, Miss Tan Xiang, what brings you here?” the middle-aged man behind the counter exclaimed, approaching with a warm smile. “Please convey my regards to Miss.”
At the same time, he glanced at Yang Shifei, his eyes filled with confusion.
It had been two years since the Luo Mansion had moved to the East City, and there had never been any mention of a man coming near. Moreover, this man was…
“No need for pleasantries,” Tan Xiang interrupted, waving her hand dismissively. “I’ve come to ask for something from you.”
The manager patted his chest with a hearty laugh. “Whatever Miss Tan Xiang needs, I’ll make sure—”
“The account books,” Tan Xiang’s lips parted slightly as she calmly requested, “I need to see the account books from the past two years.”
“…”
