Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Establishing a Base
Earth—his former homeland. He never imagined he would one day look down on it from this perspective.
"Didn't you see enough of the World Tree back then?"
Sule teased as she watched He Kui staring dreamily at the Earth.
"When we were at the World Tree, we were so far away. It wasn't as spectacular as it is now."
"Spectacular?"
Sule shrugged. Having grown up in PLANT, the sight of the blue planet didn't evoke much emotion in her.
"The operation is about to begin."
Through the reinforced glass of the bridge, He Kui could clearly see countless drop pods creating fiery trails as they descended, resembling a meteor shower, as if God were punishing the Earth.
"For ZAFT," the captain of their flagship murmured softly, the words echoing in the quiet bridge.
"Let's go; we need to start preparing," Sule said, breaking He Kui's reverie.
"Okay."
They would also use drop pods for their descent. To avoid being targeted or facing unexpected situations, they were piloting standard GINNs.
The already cramped cockpit had an extra person squeezed in. He Kui could empathize with Kira's earlier discomfort; thankfully, Sule wasn't as bulky as Murrue.
"What are you thinking about?"
Sule asked, squished into the corner of the cockpit, narrowing her eyes dangerously.
"Just wondering why we're piloting a mobile suit."
"Because I can't pilot an MS," she replied, sounding exasperated.
"Then why not go with the Red Robes next door?"
Each drop pod carried four mobile suits. Besides their own GINN, there was also a three-member combat team assigned to ensure Sule's safety.
"Absolutely not!"
"Careful, or you might shake."
Perhaps it was because of their high favorability; He Kui didn't mind much. They had already launched neutron jammers to cause chaos for the Earth Alliance, but landing would still expose them to counter-attacks from small units. If luck was against them or they faltered, things could turn fatal.
Just then, the drop pod shook violently, and the scenery outside turned a crimson hue, as if drenched in blood.
"First armor separation, decelerate to Mach 4, angle good, thirty seconds until forced cooling stops, aerodynamic control initiated."
The control of the drop pod was in the hands of the Red Robe pilot, who began reporting various data. He Kui's hand on the joystick alternated between tightening and relaxing.
Unlike the last time when he was in the rear, he was now heading for the front lines.
"Are you nervous?"
Sule's hand covered He Kui's gloved one.
"Not really."
"It'll be fine."
Just as Sule finished speaking, a communication from their team leader came through.
"Alpha 1 calling all units, box formation, check gun chambers, secure shields."
"Bravo 2, confirmed."
"Charlie 3, confirmed."
"Delta 4, confirmed," He Kui replied last.
"Second outer armor separation, Delta 4, watch your distance."
"Delta 4 acknowledged."
"Breaking through the troposphere, decelerate to 0.9 Mach, cooling complete, posture good."
"Landing area, coordinates tracked and fixed, here we go!"
With the end of the communication, the drop pod released its restraints, and the four machines descended from the sky, using their jets to slow down as they hit the ground.
"Incoming missiles ahead, defensive maneuvers!"
In the face of the small destroyer fleet hastily sent by the Atlantic Federation, the missiles posed no direct threat to the GINNs. All four units raised their machine guns, and in an instant, the missiles, now lacking radar guidance, were shot down one after another.
"The neutron jammers are performing better than expected," Sule said, her eyes adjusting to the battlefield scene. The sight of the one-sided conflict eased her worries; it seemed the Earth Alliance was unable to organize its forces due to the sudden energy and communication issues.
"Yeah, let's get started."
He Kui maneuvered the GINN, following the other three units deeper into the heart of Capentaria. With supplies continuously air-dropped into Capentar
ia, they were all required to participate in the construction of the basic military base.
