Chapter 58: The Growing Harem Ambition
The air inside the warehouse was heavy with the acrid stench of burning machinery and blood. Wanda Maximoff stood at the forefront, the Chitauri Scepter glowing brightly in her hand. Beside her, Natasha Romanoff leveled her pistols at the towering figure of Commander Magnus, who stood amidst the carnage, his advanced combat armor glinting under the flickering industrial lights.
Magnus's smirk was cold and condescending as he raised his energy rifle. "You mutants and your little rebellion—pathetic. You're nothing but pests to be exterminated."
Wanda tilted her head, her crimson eyes narrowing. "You're awfully confident for someone who's about to lose."
Before Magnus could respond, Natasha opened fire. Her twin pistols barked sharply, and bullets ricocheted off his armor, sparking and leaving faint scorch marks. The commander staggered back slightly, his composure faltering for a moment.
Wanda seized the opportunity. Channeling her chaos magic through the scepter, she aimed a tendril of glowing crimson energy at his legs. The magic wrapped around him like a constricting serpent, rooting him to the ground.
Magnus snarled, his energy rifle glowing as he aimed it directly at Wanda. The weapon unleashed a searing bolt of energy, bright and blinding as it tore through the air. Wanda raised her hand, a shimmering barrier of chaos magic forming just in time to absorb the blast.
The energy dissipated harmlessly against the barrier, leaving Wanda unscathed. She arched an eyebrow, a faint smirk playing on her lips. "Is that all you've got? How pathetic. Even Hydra managed more than this, and they were just a bunch of mind-controlled zombies."
Magnus's face twisted in fury. With a snarl, he ripped an energy grenade from his chest harness. His eyes glinted with malice as he hurled it toward Natasha. "You might be able to block my shots," he sneered, "but is your friend as capable?"
The grenade sailed through the air, glowing ominously. Natasha's lips curled into a smirk as she raised her pistol, her calm demeanor never wavering. With a single, precise shot, she struck the grenade midair, sending it hurtling toward the remaining Project X soldiers clustered at the edge of the room.
The explosion was deafening, a burst of searing light and heat that engulfed the soldiers. Their screams were short-lived as the blast reduced them to ash and debris, leaving Magnus as the sole survivor of his force.
Natasha holstered one of her pistols, her smirk widening. "Normally, I'd say three strikes and you're out, but at this rate, you're not even qualified to play ball with us."
Wanda laughed softly, her chaos magic tightening around Magnus's legs. "Well said."
Magnus struggled against the magic binding him, his armor creaking as he strained. "You'll never win," he spat, his voice a mix of rage and desperation. "Mutants are abominations! Humanity will never accept you. You'll either be destroyed or controlled, like the animals you are."
Callisto stepped forward, her spear gleaming as she leveled it at him. "You talk a lot of trash for someone who just lost," she said, her voice dripping with disdain. Without hesitation, she hurled the spear with deadly precision.
The weapon struck Magnus in the chest, the force of the impact knocking him back. He gasped, blood bubbling at his lips as he clutched at the spear embedded in his armor. "You… mutants…" he choked, his voice fading.
Callisto smirked, folding her arms. "Guess that's one way to take out the trash."
Wanda stepped forward, her expression unreadable as she knelt beside the dying commander. Crimson magic flared faintly around her hands as she placed them on either side of his helmet. "Let's see what secrets you're hiding," she murmured.
Magnus's eyes widened in panic, but he was too weak to resist. Wanda's magic delved into his mind, sifting through his memories with ruthless efficiency. Flashes of images and words bombarded her senses: a name, William Stryker, and the shadowy outlines of a sprawling laboratory. She saw experiments conducted on mutants, genetic testing, and a chilling blueprint labeled "The Mutant Solution."
As the vision faded, Wanda withdrew her magic. Magnus slumped lifelessly to the ground, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling.
Wanda stood, her grip on the scepter tightening. "Stryker," she said softly, the name a bitter taste on her tongue.
Natasha stepped up beside her. "Who's that?"
"A government scientist," Wanda replied, her voice cold. "He's the one pulling the strings behind Project X. This wasn't the end. It's just the beginning."
Fracture's voice hummed in Wanda's mind, its tone laced with a strange amusement. **"You're starting to see it, Maximoff. The path ahead isn't just yours—it's ours. And you're gathering the people who will stand by your side. Leaders like you attract the strongest allies... and the greatest lovers."**
Wanda rolled her eyes, her tone sarcastic as she muttered under her breath. "Who would want that many girlfriends?"
Natasha glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. "What was that?"
"Nothing," Wanda replied quickly, shaking her head.
As they began to leave the warehouse, Wanda found herself lost in thought. A few weeks ago, she never would have imagined herself standing here, leading a group of mutants and fighting alongside a woman like Natasha. She'd never even considered being in a relationship with a woman before.
But now… things were different. She was different. And for the first time in a long while, she liked who she was becoming.
Callisto approached, her expression thoughtful. "Stryker, huh? Sounds like someone we'll need to deal with."
"We will," Wanda said firmly. "But not tonight. Tonight, we won."
Callisto nodded, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Not bad, Maximoff. Not bad at all."
Natasha chuckled softly as they stepped out into the cool night air. "You're getting good at this whole hero thing."
Wanda smirked. "I'm just getting started."
