Veil of Dusk A dystopian world

Chapter 36: “Tension Before the Storm”

The crystals lay neatly stacked inside a small crate that Rex had salvaged from one of the abandoned machine halls. Kyro knelt beside it, draping a cloth over them to conceal their glow, while Rex sat on a toppled steel beam, dismantling his kinetic bow.

"Four crystals," Kyro finally said. "Not bad for a start."

Rex nodded, cast a quick glance over his shoulder, and sighed. "But not enough to get us through to the end. We need at least twice this amount if we want a real chance of making it out of here."

Kyro leaned back, letting his gaze wander across the ruins. "Do you think we should just keep going the way we have been?"

Rex smirked – a mischievous grin Kyro had come to recognize well. "Why not? Our plan has worked so far: observe, analyze, strike – and vanish before they even realize what happened."

Before Kyro could reply, a loud crash shattered the silence. Both of them spun around, peering through the rusted windows of the warehouse. Bright flashes of light flickered between the wreckage of the large hall, accompanied by sparks that briefly illuminated the space.

"Another fight," Rex murmured, reaching for his bow. "That could mean good news for us."

Kyro shook his head. "Or trouble. We should be careful."

"Of course," Rex replied with a crooked smile. "As careful as ever."
