Unlimited Blade Works of the Raging Dimension

Chapter 16: Time in the Imperial Capital

In this thousand-year-old imperial capital, the darkness behind its prosperity still runs rampant, and the tyranny of the ministers continues to devastate the common people.

Yet, even the darkness is hidden beneath the surface of prosperity. The superficial prosperity of the imperial capital still attracts many citizens of the empire, unaware of the truth, to enter the capital and fall into its shadows. Therefore, the prosperity of the imperial capital is unmatched by any other region.

The main street of the imperial capital is one of the most bustling places in the city. The towering buildings lining the street alone are enough to prove this fact.

In recent days, a food cart has appeared on the most prosperous street of the imperial capital. Normally, this wouldn't be anything special. On this street, there are not only mobile food carts but also many luxurious multi-story restaurants. A single food cart doesn't mean much.

At first, everyone thought the same, so most people didn't care or even know about the existence of such a food cart.

However, the situation surprised them just three days later.

It was late at night, and since the imperial capital enforced a curfew, everyone in the city was already asleep, recovering from the fatigue of the day. Perhaps, for the people of the imperial capital, this was the most peaceful time of the day.

After pushing the food cart into the courtyard, Shirou slowly let out a sigh of relief. He was extremely tired today.

"Even after experiencing this several times, I still can't help but sigh. Your cooking skills are really impressive." Zaruba's voice echoed in Shirou's ears again. "You're not just a great chef turned Heroic Spirit, are you?"

"Stop it, Zaruba. I'm almost exhausted now. Even fighting doesn't make me this tired. I think I need to rest for a few days." Shirou's somewhat helpless voice reached Zaruba.

"Really? If you want to rest, you can do so anytime, but you're not doing it. It seems like you're also enjoying the cooking process." Zaruba said with a hint of sarcasm. He could see that his contractor had a bit of a tsundere personality. He clearly enjoyed this, but he said one thing and did another.

"Who would enjoy it?" A slight blush appeared on Shirou's face, but he quickly returned to normal. "If everything goes as usual, it's fine, but the darkness of this city is truly disgusting. The imperial capital's security forces alone are enough to cause trouble."

When Shirou first entered the imperial capital, to gather information and maintain secrecy, he came up with the idea of setting up a fast-food cart.

It was just to keep a low profile; it definitely wasn't because he wanted to do something.

Just like that, relying on Shirou's advanced housekeeping skills, his business was booming within just three days, with almost every dish selling out. His popularity was so high that even Shirou felt a bit pressured.

However, what bothered him wasn't this—it was the imperial capital's guards who were the most annoying.

Under normal circumstances, it was common for members of the imperial capital's security team to accept bribes from street vendors, eat for free, and so on. What was even more infuriating was that this group of people didn't just stop there; Shirou was extorted by them several times, but to avoid trouble, he simply spent some money to settle it.

Although he didn't care about the money, this disgusting attitude bothered Shirou.

However, setting aside these concerns, in the half-month since arriving in the imperial capital, Shirou had gathered a lot of interesting information. Although most of it was just urban legends, after sifting through them, he unexpectedly obtained a lot of useful information. The details won't be explained one by one.

Shirou pushed the food cart into the courtyard and skillfully unloaded various kitchen utensils from the cart to make cleaning easier later. Then he deftly grabbed a brush and carefully scrubbed the remaining oil stains on the cart, used a clean cloth to wipe off the remaining moisture, and finally covered the cleaned cart with a tarp to ensure it wouldn't be contaminated by dust overnight.

After doing all this, Shirou picked up the kitchen utensils he had unloaded earlier and walked into the house.

The house wasn't big, only about 70 square meters when converted. Fortunately, there was a courtyard here, which was perfect for Shirou to park his food cart. Of course, this house wasn't bought by him but rented. After all, he wouldn't be staying in this world for long and would leave after some time. As for the environment, he wasn't picky.

As he washed the unfinished kitchen utensils, he hummed a song. These moments were also rare peaceful times for him, because every time he cleaned the kitchen utensils, Shirou would always be reminded of the past.

'Sakura, Rin, Saber, Fuji-nee, and Illya, I wonder if I'll have the chance to meet them again in the future.'

Shirou's thoughts slowly drifted back to his childhood, when he was still in high school. The Holy Grail War that suddenly struck his life completely changed its course and also led him to meet his friends: Saber, Rin, and Illya. They spent what could be considered the happiest time of his life together.

His thoughts slowly wandered, and the King of Knights holding the holy sword appeared before his eyes again. The experiences they shared in the past replayed in his mind one by one, as if uncontrollable. As the strongest Heroic Spirit, Artoria unexpectedly, or inevitably, formed a contract with him, the weakest Master. Because of this, his somewhat paranoid dream seemed to have a possibility of becoming reality. In their many battles together, their passionate hearts slowly drew closer, clinging tightly to each other and feeling each other's heartbeat.

In the end, the two of them finally ended up together, but...

Shirou's hands stopped unconsciously, but as soon as he realized it, he immediately continued the task at hand.

In the morning, the light of dawn shone on the two of them. The girl with long golden hair and emerald eyes slowly uttered those words to herself, then smiled, as if she had no regrets about disappearing into the golden light.

The figure vanished, but her words still echoed in Shirou's ears:

"One more thing, Shirou. I love you."

After cleaning the last kitchen utensil, Shirou washed his hands and lay down on the bed, but he didn't fall asleep.

Not to mention that as a Heroic Spirit, he didn't need sleep—just the blue figure in his mind was enough to unsettle him, and he had another plan for tonight.

"What's wrong? It seems like your mood isn't great." Zaruba seemed to notice Shirou's current mood and asked.

"It's nothing, I just remembered some things from the past." Shirou waved his hand and replied.

"Alright."

Just like that, he lay in bed for a while, and then the alarm I placed on the bedside table rang.

Shirou sat up, skillfully turned off the alarm, got up, and walked out the door—it was time to hunt.
