Chapter 15: The Reward
The sun was beginning to set. Shirou sat atop Keith, slowly feeling the wind brush against his face. His body, slightly fatigued from the battle, also seemed to regain some energy.
"Shirou, it seems like you're enjoying yourself." Zaruba's voice rang in his ears, snapping Shirou out of his reverie.
"Zaruba, you should stay quiet for now." The peaceful atmosphere shattered as Shirou frowned slightly, speaking to Zaruba with a hint of helplessness.
"If you want to have fun, you still have time, but there's something I need to tell you." Zaruba ignored Shirou's tone and continued, "This time, the second objective has been achieved, and the second reward is also ready for you."
"What? The second reward?" Shirou raised an eyebrow, seemingly a bit confused, but then he realized, "You mean the reward mechanism gives a reward every time a target is collected?"
"Exactly. What's wrong? Is there a problem?" Zaruba looked at him with a hint of confusion.
"Nothing, I just didn't expect the new boss's benefits to be so generous."
This was indeed true. When Shirou served as a Guardian under the Counter Force, he could only immerse himself in endless slaughter without any freedom, like a slave. However, this time, the light source was unexpectedly generous, assigning him the task of finding the missing parts of the light source. Honestly, aside from being a bit time-consuming, this task was far easier than his previous Guardian missions.
"Since the benefits are good, you should take them. This time, the reward is related to space, so go ahead and claim it."
After he finished speaking, a purple ball of light flew out of Zaruba's mouth, slowly merging into Shirou's forehead from the air, and then a message was injected into his mind.
"Hiss!!"
Shirou clutched his forehead in pain, receiving the sudden message, but this was child's play compared to the changes happening within his body.
Deep within his heart, the mental world filled with swords, gears, and lava quietly underwent a subtle transformation. In the mental world, an area began to change—the lava disappeared, replaced by a vibrant light. The land seemed to be crafted by the hands of a Creator God. On this small patch of land, something began to take shape freely, gradually forming as if following the consciousness of the mind's owner, eventually transforming into a traditional Japanese-style house.
This wasn't the end. Soon after, as if the rules had changed from their source, the entire mental space seemed to undergo many subtle changes, and these changes might only be known to Shirou himself.
After waiting for a while, Shirou slowly opened his eyes.
"How's the reward?" Zaruba asked.
"Not bad. At least I don't have to worry about not having a place to stay during future missions."
"Hey, is that all? At least you can fix up a place for Keith."
"That's actually not a bad idea." Shirou nodded.
Honestly, when he learned about the nature of this reward, he couldn't help but feel shocked. This was essentially a small-dimensional world, with a radius of only about a thousand meters. It was directly integrated into a person's mental space, making it equivalent to having something akin to a portable space.
Of course, Shirou was also surprised. It wasn't just the space itself, but the fact that this space was integrated into his own mental world.
It's worth noting that your mental world is the deepest part of your soul, something you've seen before. You die. The scenery you see cannot be easily changed.
Even if it undergoes changes, it's only due to the clash of beliefs when confronting his past that caused his mental world to reveal the landscape of his past, but overall, that was also a change within Emiya Shirou himself.
However, this time, something foreign was directly integrated into his own mental world. This was undoubtedly shocking to Shirou, but as Zaruba said, no matter how you put it, this solved the main problem—the issue of Keith.
Keith was a high-level dangerous species, one of the top-tier Fierce Wind Falcons, born with the power to control the wind. It could be said that this creature was extremely dangerous, second only to the materials used for Imperial Arms.
As a mount, Keith was highly qualified, but Shirou's current destination was the imperial capital. In this case, Keith couldn't be brought along, so whether to leave him or take him was a problem. However, with this solution, there was no issue. Just store him in the mental world, where living beings can also be stored due to the integration of space.
"Exactly. Let's not dwell on this anymore. Shirou, the location of the last light source has been determined. Should we go look for it?"
"Forget it, don't you see what time it is? You'll have to wait a few days to find it. Let's rest." Shirou replied lazily, though it was unclear if he truly thought so.
"I see. But honestly, that battle was quite tense." Zaruba changed the subject, shifting to the day's battle. "If the light source hadn't been on her tie, even I wouldn't have noticed it."
Indeed, during today's battle, Akame's ability to conceal her aura was so great that even Zaruba hadn't noticed it. The reason Shirou was able to accurately avoid Akame's attack was because the light source was on Akame, allowing Zaruba to pinpoint her location and inform Shirou.
"I understand what you mean. Don't worry, I won't do something foolish like underestimating the enemy just because I defeated them by exploiting a weakness." Shirou smiled faintly. This companion of his was just afraid he would underestimate the enemy.
"That's good. I didn't expect you to be so rational."
"After all, I'm a Heroic Spirit, not a rookie on the battlefield."
"Right, I forgot about that."
"Besides, don't underestimate my perception." Shirou smiled faintly, "Although I can't accurately judge Akame's concealment ability, I wouldn't fail to detect an enemy's attack even when it's right in front of me. After all, I'm also a Heroic Spirit with the Assassin class."
"Assassin?" Zaruba was slightly confused and didn't seem to understand the term. "What do you mean, Assassin? What's that class?"
"You don't know? Didn't the light source introduce you to me?"
"It only gave me information about your identity, nothing else."
"I see." Shirou nodded.
Then, he explained to Zaruba some information about the Holy Grail War and details about the Throne of Heroes.
Time continued to pass on the road. Keith's speed was indeed very fast. He arrived near the imperial capital in just ten minutes.
And the ancient thousand-year-old city once again appeared before Shirou's eyes.
From that day onward, the fates of many people, including the fate of this thousand-year-old nation, began to change.
