Chapter 4 - The Changxian Sect Token
Before dawn on the second day, Gu Yao and Chi Changye were already standing outside the Gu family estate. Gu Yao had exchanged a token for his freedom from the Gu family, along with silver notes worth ten thousand taels and a thousand spirit pearls.
He didn’t ask for much. After his mother passed away, all her belongings ended up in the hands of the Gu family. His own possessions were also taken by the family under various pretenses. But if he had asked for more, by the time he stepped out of the Gu family, he would have lost his life. All it would take was for the Gu family to release a rumor. No need for them to take action themselves; he would be lying dead in the streets before long.
“Let’s find a place to settle down for now.”
“Alright.” Chi Changye took the light bundle from Gu Yao’s hands.
On the way, to avoid awkwardness, Gu Yao explained the origin of the Changxian Sect: “The Changxian Sect is regarded as a holy land for cultivation, but it isn’t located in this area. Every time the Changxian Sect recruits disciples, they come through a teleportation array, and they only accept disciples with single or mutated spiritual roots. Once any family’s disciple is chosen by the Changxian Sect, the family’s status rises rapidly.”
“So I believe that the Tian family and Lu family don’t know I have this token. Otherwise…” Gu Yao sneered. Otherwise, the Lu family would have been eager to snatch him back and take him in, especially since his aunt was from the Lu family. In his view, his uncle’s eldest son, Gu Yan, must know about the token’s existence. His uncle was clearly planning to get him into the Changxian Sect, so his aunt couldn’t have been unaware. But she didn’t tell her family; otherwise, the Lu family would have done everything in their power to stop the Gu family from obtaining it. The Lu family wouldn’t allow the Gu family to dominate alone.
“This token contains my essence blood. It can only be used by someone if I personally reclaim it. Once I die, the token will be destroyed. This was a method my uncle left behind. I believe his cultivation level is higher than that of the Gu family’s ancestors.” If not, they would have taken the token long ago and forcibly extracted his essence blood, since Gu Yao had always refused to give it voluntarily. The old patriarch of the Gu family and Gu Zhiming probably already hated him deeply for it.
Chi Changye considered this and said, “Actually, large sects aren’t that easy to handle. The number of disciples who die each year from various accidents is incalculable. Entering a large sect doesn’t mean you’re free from worries. Your concerns are justified.”
In Chi Changye’s view, Gu Yao’s decision to give up the token was the right one. Without a background and without good talent, it would be nearly impossible to rise in a large sect. When Gu Yao had initially refused to hand it over, Chi Changye had probably guessed the reason. It was likely that Gu Yao wanted to use this opportunity to make the Gu family members who had bullied him look bad.
Of course, this is just a temporary measure. Both of them knew in their hearts that, in the future, they would have to make the Gu family pay for their intimidation and revenge.
The town of Yuanyang was divided into three areas controlled by three cultivation families. Gu Yao couldn’t stay on the Gu family’s territory, and he wouldn’t go to the Lu family either. Naturally, he chose the Tian family. He didn’t know why Tian Feirong had exposed the existence of the “Drunken Beauty,” but from what he could see now, the Tian family had the least conflict with him. The people from the Lu family had always disliked him.
Not long after stepping onto Tian family land, two people stopped Gu Yao and Chi Changye: “Young Master Gu Yao, our young master requests your presence.”
“Tian Feirong?”
“Exactly.”
“Then please lead the way.” Gu Yao nodded. It seemed that Tian Feirong had sent someone to keep an eye on the Gu family, which was why this had happened. He couldn’t understand what Tian Feirong’s real intentions were.
As he thought about Tian Feirong, Gu Yao recalled some details. In Yuanyang town, Tian Feirong had a somewhat bad reputation. His cultivation talent wasn’t impressive, but he was spoiled by his mother. He was known for his love of women and a playboy lifestyle, making him notorious. But now, looking back, it seemed that all of this might have been just a facade.
Soon, Gu Yao and Chi Changye stood before Tian Feirong. The latter, still holding a fan in his hand, circled around Gu Yao with a lecherous look. Chi Changye twitched his foot, almost stepping forward to block Gu Yao and wanting to punch the man in front of them out of sight.
Perhaps sensing an unusual danger, Tian Feirong finally stopped, “I didn’t expect the Gu family to be so heartless, just sending you both away like this? I heard the Gu family head is very shrewd. Would he really let you, Gu Yao, go so easily?”
Would that old man take the blame for nothing? After all, Gu Yao’s mother had died to save his son.
“Of course not,” Gu Yao knew what he was trying to probe. Tian Feirong was likely just as curious as the Lu family, and now the Gu family probably didn’t care about being exposed. After all, if the Gu family were still cautious, would he have made it to Tian family territory? “I exchanged a Changxian Sect token for my freedom.”
“Slap!”
Tian Feirong’s fan dropped to the ground, and he stared at Gu Yao in shock, forgetting to pick it up. He hurriedly asked, “Is it the Changxian Sect token I’m thinking of?”
“Exactly. With this token, I can directly enter the Changxian Sect to cultivate. It was left by my uncle,” Gu Yao explained kindly, his eyes betraying a bit of schadenfreude. Wasn’t his show something worth watching?
Tian Feirong stomped his foot. This was bad! He picked up the fan and rushed outside. He had to report this news quickly. As he reached the door, he called back, “This is my place. If Young Master Gu Yao has nowhere else to go, he can stay here for now. I’ll visit you all when I have time.”
The two guards who had followed them also left. The small courtyard fell into silence. Gu Yao, feeling somewhat awkward, glanced at Chi Changye, suddenly becoming a little tongue-tied, “Let’s stay here for now. You can choose a room.”
Chi Changye glanced at Gu Yao and casually picked the nearest room, “This one will do.”
“Then I’ll take the other one. It’s getting late. We can talk more tomorrow,” Gu Yao said. After Chi Changye nodded, he picked up his bundle and went into the room. Gu Yao didn’t notice the smile that flashed in Chi Changye’s eyes as he watched his retreating back. Then, Chi Changye casually walked to his own room. Although they had fallen into such an awful situation, it seemed like there was still a glimmer of hope—perhaps it wasn’t as hard to accept after all.
Changxian Sect? I’ve never heard of it. The spiritual energy here is so thin; it seems like I’ve moved far away from my original place. That’s actually good—it allows me to leave everything behind and start fresh. However, the priority right now is to heal my injuries. Without cultivation, I’ll only be at the mercy of others, let alone protect anyone else.
Chi Changye meditated in his room the entire night. Gu Yao, having just woken up and gone through so much, was physically and mentally exhausted. He fell into a deep sleep without a care. He thought he would sleep until dawn, but unexpectedly, someone entered his dreams—a man so incredibly beautiful that Gu Yao in the dream was left stunned.
