Chapter 3 - The Third Round of Questioning
In the main hall of the front courtyard, the head of the Gu family sat in the main seat, flanked by the elders of the family. There was also an elder of the family in closed-door cultivation at the Foundation Establishment stage, but this elder rarely appeared unless it was an urgent matter. In any case, Gu Yao had never seen him.
The situations of the Tian and Lu families were not much different, as this show of strength was meant to intimidate cultivators within a thousand miles of Yuanyang Town.
Most of the Gu family members were present, and the dozens of people crowded the hall, making it seem a bit cramped. Gu Yao and Chi Changye walked in under the gaze of many pairs of eyes. When the younger children saw Chi Changye’s appearance, some of them gasped in shock, while others averted their eyes in disdain, and some simply flicked their gaze away.
The second son of the Gu family, Gu Zhiming, furrowed his brows. How did Gu Yao bring this man here? Did the steward not stop him?
Chi Changye swept his gaze over the crowd and took in their expressions, his heart filled with cold amusement. With his appearance, how many people would still think that Gu Yao was shameless and had compromised himself with some stranger at his grandfather’s birthday banquet?
Chi Changye understood that Gu Yao had brought him here for this reason and did not refuse. After all, they were supposed to be husband and wife now, so it made sense for them to support each other and stand together.
Gu Yao showed no attempt to hide the sarcasm on his face and directly asked, “I wonder why you’ve summoned your grandson here? What is the matter?”
Gu Zhiming’s face darkened immediately when he saw Gu Yao’s unrepentant expression. “You wretched fool! Look at what you’ve done! You…” Compared to the others, he was truly furious. His finger trembled as he pointed at Gu Yao. “You’ve completely disgraced the Gu family!”
Gu Yao swept his gaze across the room. The expressions on the faces of Gu Xing and Gu Chen were still full of smugness and contempt for him, while the eldest son Gu and his eldest son still hadn’t hidden the mocking looks in their eyes. The third son Gu, on the other hand, was grinning widely, seemingly enjoying the show, and did not avoid Gu Yao’s gaze.
At the head of the room sat the Gu family’s patriarch, Gu Yao’s grandfather. Gu Yao could see the faint disgust in his cold eyes. Was that disgust aimed at him? Gu Yao couldn’t help but sneer inwardly. The Gu family could keep their contempt—he didn’t need them.
“Does grandfather also want me to confess?” Gu Yao unexpectedly responded with a straightforward answer. “Fine, I confess!” His voice was clear and resolute. “I, Gu Yao, am shameless. On my grandfather’s birthday, I shamelessly compromised myself with this unknown gentleman, and to top it off, I had the audacity to use the precious ‘Drunken Beauty’ worth thousands of gold. I even saved money meant for food just to buy this thing. In front of the younger generations of the Gu, Tian, and Lu families, I’ve completely disgraced the Gu family. Grandpa, what do you think?”
As soon as Gu Yao finished speaking, several faces in the hall contorted in anger. Was this a confession? He was clearly telling everyone that it was not he who embarrassed the Gu family, but that he was the one being framed.
“Drunken Beauty?” Third son Gu, Gu Zhiyuan, raised his brow.
“Indeed, the Drunken Beauty from the Wenxiang Tower. Can you believe that I, Gu Yao, who can’t even receive my monthly stipend of fifty taels, managed to gather a thousand taels of silver for it? I wonder if Grandpa knows about this?” Gu Yao fixed his gaze directly on the Gu family patriarch. What kind of treatment had he received from the Gu family? Did his father and grandfather have no idea? Were they unaware that the servants were embezzling his allowances?
The direct descendants of the Gu family were entitled to various shares, such as elixirs and spiritual beads, but none of these shares had ever reached Gu Yao. Even with his current cultivation at the second level of Qi Refining, it was thanks to certain people in the Gu family. Otherwise, even with poor spiritual roots, his previous life spent meditating and focusing on cultivation wouldn’t have been enough to raise his cultivation to even the second level of Qi Refining.
“Who knows if you’ve completely lost your mind…” Gu Xing seemed to realize there was something wrong and hastily shouted out loud.
“Shut up!” The Gu family patriarch finally spoke. The oppressive aura of a Qi Refining cultivator at the ninth level was unleashed, and the entire hall suddenly grew tense. Gu Xing’s face immediately turned pale as she shot a hateful glare at Gu Yao.
Gu Yao didn’t care about the girl. Most of the patriarch’s oppressive aura was directed at him, trying to force him into submission.
Gu Yao’s knees trembled, and large beads of cold sweat dripped from his forehead, but he gritted his teeth and stood his ground, not kneeling on the spot. If he kneeled, it would mean he admitted fault, but what fault did he have? Just as the pressure seemed unbearable, Chi Changye reached out and placed a hand on Gu Yao’s arm. Instantly, the weight on his body lightened, and the pressure receded like a tide.
“Everyone, leave. Only Gu Yao stays. The eldest, second, and third sons stay as well!” The old patriarch issued the order.
“Yes.”
The others respectfully withdrew, and as they left, Gu Xing and Gu Chen cast unwilling glares at Gu Yao. Gu Yan looked at Gu Yao with confusion but eventually smiled. Though he couldn’t understand whether Gu Yao had changed because he had given up on everything, he knew that these changes wouldn’t alter the final outcome. What he wanted was the result, and he believed his father would help him secure it.
Gu Xing and Gu Chen, these twins, would later realize that everything they had done had only paved the way for their cousin, making them the laughingstock.
Gu Yao was like someone fished out of water, supported by Chi Changye to stand. The Gu patriarch glanced at him, and Gu Yao noticed it. He sneered and said, “Someone put a lot of effort into sending me to this person, so I’ve played along with their wishes. From now on, Chi Changye and I are family.”
“You… shameless! I have no son like you!” Gu Zhiming shouted.
Gu Yao’s expression immediately turned cold as he raised his head to glare at Gu Zhiming. He didn’t want such a father either!
The latter seemed a little guilty under Gu Yao’s gaze and was about to speak again when a single glance from the old patriarch made him swallow his words.
“I see that this young man has no cultivation at all. He is not fit to enter the Gu family’s door,” the old patriarch said.
“Since they’ve already used the Drunken Beauty, of course, I am married off,” Gu Yao retorted with a cold laugh.
“You want to leave the Gu family?” the old patriarch asked coldly.
“Didn’t you all say I’ve disgraced the Gu family? Isn’t this the perfect solution for everyone to be happy?”
The old patriarch stroked his beard and said, “You can leave, but leave your things behind.”
Gu Yao laughed heartily. As expected, the younger generations of the Gu family had been scheming against him, and perhaps this old man had been watching with cold detachment all along. Compared to those “things,” what was the Gu family’s face worth? As long as they truly got rid of him, wouldn’t the Tian and Lu families, at the very least, align with the Gu family?
“Dad?” Gu Zhiming looked at his father in confusion.
The old patriarch scolded, “From now on, you need to properly discipline Gu Xing and Gu Chen. Look at the mess they’ve caused! They used such tactics against their own brother. What won’t they do to the clan in the future? Do you think I, as the family head, am so blind that I don’t know what they’ve done?”
The old patriarch reprimanded without holding back, and Gu Zhiming, feeling embarrassed, didn’t know how to respond. From what his father said, it seemed that Gu Xing and Gu Chen were the ones behind this? Although he was reluctant to admit it, with the old patriarch saying so, it seemed like it was mostly true. However, these twins had always been favored by him. How could he bring himself to reprimand them? After all, it was Gu Yao who had embarrassed them in front of everyone.
