1136 Chapter 1136 Ruler of the Molten Depths
With a single slash of his blade, Quillon sliced through a half dozen Hell Centipedes.
Their molten armor that could easily hold up to the strikes of renowned fighters across the world, offered as much resistance as wet paper against Quillon's strikes.
His prodigious skill with the sword and the more than thirty levels he had on even the strongest of the monsters, allowed him to utterly thrash the creatures that could each overrun a large town on their own.
'I've really come a long way. When I first got here, those things would have been unbelievably terrifying. All I could have done was stay intangible and run away. Now, they only constitute an annoyance.' Marcus thought, ruminating on how his perception of the world had changed as he obtained more power.
What had once been challenges and threats, were now trivial matters.
Yet as the swarm of Hell Centipedes continued to grow in numbers and strength, something in the back of his mind was sounding alarm bells.
It was not any of his skills, but simply the intuition he had developed after constantly getting into harrowing battles over the last few years.
For a few moments, he simply watched the monsters charging and subsequently being cut down by Quillon.
'They're not truly focused on attacking us. They're trying to run away from something.'
After observing the Hell Centipedes for several seconds, Marcus finally realized what had been nagging at the back of his mind.
The actions of this swarm were nonsensical if they were simply trying to kill Marcus and his companions as prey.
Quillon had slaughtered over a hundred of them already. Without having taken a single hit. No creature with any sort of survival instinct would keep attacking under those conditions unless something even more threatening awaited them if they turned back.
Sensing impending danger, Marcus hastily put his ingredients and cooking implements away, and then aimed his right hand at the far wall. There may not have currently been a pathway there, but that was something he could easily solve with magic.
Lyra and Relia looked confused and concerned by Marcus' actions, though, Relia became terrified when she noticed that he was conjuring a powerful light magic spell.
"Quasar Blast."
Using the tier six spell, Marcus planned to bore a hole through the rock for several kilometers and give them an escape route. Except it was already too late.
A truly overpowering presence reached them as it made itself known.
As Marcus' spell fired, the earth around them broke apart and peeled away. His magic flying into the distance as its target disappeared.
Only a moment later were all of them needing to create platforms made out of mana barriers under their feet to avoid falling into the exposed magma before.
The very landscape they had been traveling through had been warped, and now all that was around them was a sea of magma and a ceiling around a kilometer above.
Marcus watched as the Hell Centipedes fell down into the molten rock below.
Naturally, as creatures that usually lived in this unforgiving environment, the intense heat was no problem for them.
Yet they squirmed violently and crawled over each other to try and escape. Fleeing in every direction to get away from whatever was hunting them.
Unfortunately, they never stood a chance.
The entity was situated below them, deep under the magma.
In mass, the Hell Centipedes were dragged below the orange waves, and only small bits of the bodies rose to the surface afterwards as the creature finished feeding on them.
During this time, neither Marcus, Lyra, Quillon, nor Relia moved. Less they provoke the powerful mythic grade beast lurking in the depths of the magma sea.
'Maybe it will just pass us by. It just wanted those centipedes as a meal. There's no reason for it to bother with us.' Marcus thought optimistically.
Of course, things were not about to be so easy for them.
Had they been normal people, the beast lurking in the magma most likely would have paid them no mind and left. As if it had simply stumbled across some insects hardly worthy of its notice.
But that was not the case. Marcus, Lyra, and Quillon were all existences that had reached the heights of the world. Each of them was comparable to mythic grade beasts of the same level, and Marcus was even beyond that thanks to his recent evolution. No ancient and high-level entity was just going to ignore them.
From out of the molten rock, a truly enormous figure rose. Of all the creatures Marcus had encountered since coming to this world, it was likely the third largest he had ever seen. With only the Dread Burrower and The Celestial Seven Headed Serpent exceeding its size.
"A Lava Dragon." Relia muttered in despair.
She had heard rumors of this mythic beast's existence, but they were only just that. It was said to be the ruler of this area and the strongest and most dangerous entity within the magma sea. Yet there were only a few unconfirmed sightings to go off of.
Yet before them now was the very same entity that was sometimes whispered about throughout the Darklands.
Once it had mostly risen from out of the molten rock, Marcus, Lyra, Quillon, and Relia were able to see its full form.
A truly colossal dragon with black scales that had an orange glow seeping through from under them.
It had three pairs of limbs, with two seeming to be its legs while the remaining served as arms.
From out of its back sprouted four sinister looking dark red wings that hardly seemed necessary for a creature that lived within magma.
'It's stronger than Gwyneira.' Marcus thought immediately.
Of the few dragons he had encountered on Mirrion, she was the one he was most familiar with and the most powerful he had met up till now.
With a body over five hundred meters long, this Lava Dragon possessed a form of both power and terror. Few who laid their eyes upon it would be able to keep their composure.
In fact, Relia had begun shaking violently. The mythic beast's pressure was inflicting her with a fear so deep that she was unable to do anything but cower in place.
