Chapter 86: Chapter 82
Toneri schooled his expression, his glowing Tenseigan eyes meeting Darkseid's unwavering gaze.
"My name is Lunaris."
His voice was steady, devoid of unnecessary bravado, carrying only the weight of certainty.
Darkseid regarded him carefully, his expression unreadable. The massive warlord subtly adjusted his posture—his arms now at his sides rather than crossed behind his back. A small yet unmistakable sign. He was ready for combat.
Toneri—or rather, Lunaris—recognized the shift immediately. Without hesitation, he transitioned into a combat stance, one unlike anything this world had ever seen.
The Gentle Step Thousand Auspicious Omens (Jūho Senkizui).
A rare and extraordinarily powerful Gentle Fist technique, passed down by Hamura Ōtsutsuki himself. Unlike its lesser derivatives, this stance did not rely on the Byakugan, but rather on the Tenseigan's overwhelming energy, unlocking a state of absolute precision and destructive efficiency. Combined with Tenseigan Chakra Mode, its effects were nothing short of divine.
Darkseid understood the silent invitation. No more words. Only battle.
A hint of amusement flickered in the New God's eyes. This one, this Lunari, was different. Stronger. More than just another mortal foolishly throwing themselves at him.
'His presence… There is no doubt. He is divine. But unlike the gods of Themyscira, his divinity is… different.'
Darkseid did not dwell on the thought for long. It mattered little.
What mattered was that Lunaris had earned his interest.
A small smile—barely a curve of his lips—formed on Darkseid's usually emotionless face.
"Well then."
His voice, deep as the void between stars, carried an almost imperceptible hint of anticipation. It was not often that he was given the chance to exercise.
And then—
BOOM.
The very sound barrier shattered, a thunderous shockwave erupting in an instant.
Lunaris barely had a fraction of a second to register Darkseid's movement before his instincts screamed.
"Fast—"
Before the thought could even fully form, he dodged left, just as a colossal force came crashing toward him—Darkseid's fist, moving like a titanic cannon blast, the air itself warping and folding from the sheer concussive power.
Another one.
Before he had even finished dodging, another strike was already closing in—relentless, merciless, precise.
Lunaris reacted instantly.
A Truth-Seeking Orb flared into existence beside his hip, expanding into a perfectly smooth shield, silent and absolute.
No sound.
No resistance.
The attack simply… ceased to exist.
The second force completely erased, but the first force moving away from their position and crashing miles outside the ruined city—
BOOOOOM.
The entire region was reduced to dust.
Lunaris stole a glance at the utter destruction before narrowing his glowing blueish white, flower patterned eyes, gaze flickering toward the remaining intact parts of the city. Without hesitation, he dismissed the shield, allowing it to retract into its original spherical form.
Darkseid, seeing his attack fail, simply smirked.
A crimson glow pulsed in his eyes.
His Omega Beams were ready—
Ready to teach Lunaris the art of agony.
Had anyone been watching closely, they would have seen the unmistakable glint of cruel anticipation in Darkseid's expression.
But Lunaris was already moving.
His Truth-Seeking Orb shifted in his grasp, lengthening into a staff, one of his favored weapon. With a burst of pure Tenseigan Chakra, he vanished from sight, his speed utterly monstrous—even for a mortal without the Speed Force.
He reappeared beside Darkseid, his Tenseigan eye locked onto his target.
The staff whipped through the air erasing all molecules that came in contact with it, aimed directly at Darkseid's skull—a strike designed to evaporate matter on contact a side effect of the TSO(truth seeking orb).
Lunaris was fast… but at his current speed.
Darkseid was faster.
He tracked Lunaris with ease, his Omega Beams already ignited, crimson light flaring—
And then, the hellish beams of the Omega Effect were unleashed. The Omega Effect roared to life.
Two deadly, crimson beams, seething with destructive power and zigzagged, launched from Darkseid's glowing eyes.
Unlike conventional energy blasts, these were no mere linear projectiles. They tracked their target, weaving through the air like sentient vipers. The beams worked in perfect tandem, to strike independently from opposite angles—a pincer maneuver that had felled New Gods, Kryptonians, and even challenged Lightray—the New God of Speed.
Lunaris canceled his attack instantly, his reflexes sharp.
His Tenseigan Chakra Mode shone brighter, and in a single breath, he increased his speed tenfold, vanishing from his current position in a streak of cyan light.
Yet, the Omega Beams followed as did darkseid.
A simple, yet brutally effective tactic. Darkseid's signature attack moved at near light speed, seeking its prey without fail. Few had ever escaped it. Even the strongest gods and Kryptonians barely survived—and never unscathed.
But Lunaris was not like most beings.
Darkseid narrowed his eyes, tracking his prey.
Lunaris darted through the air, a streak of cyan energy weaving effortlessly through the battlefield, his speed astonishing. But what truly caught Darkseid's attention—what unsettled him—was that Lunaris did not look troubled.
He was… smiling.
It was faint, almost imperceptible, but it was there.
A feeling of unease crept into Darkseid's mind.
Why hasn't he—
Then he noticed it.
The dark-shifting Orb—or rather, the staff it had been turned into—was gone.
His glowing red gaze flicked toward Lunaris.
But Lunaris wasn't looking at him. He was looking at something beside him.
A bright white light flared to his right.
Darkseid's instincts screamed, but it was already too late.
A violent, blinding explosion of pure energy erupted beside him.
A sphere of absolute white.
The view from the new city they found themselves in now, the explosion blotted out the sky, expanding in an instant like a second sun. Yet, it made no sound—only a low, ominous hum, barely audible except to those caught in its grasp.
Darkseid burst out of the light, arms crossed in front of him, coated in crackling Omega Energy.
But he was with a few scratches.
His massive frame smoked, deep scorch marks covering his armor. The plating on his side was practically gone, revealing a small burnt, exposed flesh.
Darkseid's expression darkened.
His arms dropped to his sides, and for the first time in the battle, true annoyance flickered across his usually impassive face.
His crimson gaze burned with malice.
Then—
He unleashed 4 more Omega Beams.
Twin streams of the hellish energy spewed forth—six pairs in total—converging from all sides, ensuring no escape.
Lunaris' eyes flashed.
At the last possible second—
He raised a hand, and space itself twisted.
Amenosakeme.
A portal tore open before him, swallowing four pairs of Omega Beams instantly.
Behind Darkseid—another portal opened.
The beams erupted from it at full force—slamming into Darkseid's back.
A deep, guttural groan tore from the New God's throat as he was propelled forward, his own attack blasting him across the battlefield.
Lunaris saw his chance.
His body flickered forward in an instant, his hand outstretched—
But Darkseid reacted just in time.
With a roar, he threw a monstrous punch at Lunaris.
Lunaris ducked at the very last second leaving an afterimage.
The final two Omega Beams still locked onto him speared through the afterimage and slammed into Darkseid's chest instead, burning deep into his armor.
And then—
Lunaris' fingers brushed against the underside of Darkseid's outstretched arm.
And in the next breath—
They vanished.
_____
A hellish scene stretched before them.
Pits of fire erupted from the cracked ground, casting an eerie, flickering glow. The air was thick, heavy with malice and malevolence, suffocating even to those who had endured the worst. Dark, jagged metallic structures pierced the sky like rusted daggers, forming the skeletal remains of a world built on suffering. Overhead, a permanent storm of darkness raged, with crimson lightning flashing across the abyss, illuminating the twisted towers that loomed over them like silent sentinels of despair.
"...Well, I've had a lot of exes tell me to go to hell, but not once did I think I'd actually end up here," Green Lantern muttered, his emerald glow standing out against the oppressive gloom.
A low, gruff "Hnn."
Batman stood behind him, his sharp eyes scanning the nightmarish landscape.
Diana, now fully healed thanks to Toneri's intervention, stood beside them, hidden within the shadows of a ruined building. Her expression was calm, but there was a flicker of unease in her eyes.
"So… this is Apokolips," she murmured.
"Stop talking," Batman cut in, his voice a cold whisper. "You'll attract the Parademons."
Green Lantern exhaled. "Now what?"
Before anyone could answer, another voice spoke.
"We proceed as planned."
They turned to see Ctoneri—Toneri's clone—standing beside them in his normal form, save for the strange pigment around his eyes, an eerie reminder of his power.
"By the original plan," Ctoneri continued, "Batman and I will handle things here. The rest of the team will wait and prepare for our arrival. Cyborg will stand by, ready to shut down all Mother Box portals on Earth."
Batman's gaze flicked toward him. "But first, we rescue Superman."
Ctoneri gave a slight nod. His gaze locked onto a towering structure in the distance—a colossal black tower, its spires crackling with dark energy. He lifted a single finger, pointing directly at it.
"We'll go there."
Diana frowned. "Why there?"
"I can sense him," Ctoneri replied.
Batman's expression hardened. "And that's where the Parademons are taking their captives."
They watched as swarms of Parademons carried struggling prisoners through the sky, their jagged wings cutting through the air like serrated blades. Each unfortunate captive was dragged toward the dark tower, vanishing into its abyssal depths.
Green Lantern clenched his jaw. "Move closer."
As the group drew near, he extended his ring-wielding hand, constructing a protective bubble around them. Just as he was about to lift them, he heard a whisper—
"Meisagakure no Jutsu."
Batman turned toward Ctoneri. "What did you do?"
"I cloaked us," Ctoneri answered.
"Unwanted eyes will not find us."
The bubble ascended silently, carrying them toward a platform that jutted out from the dark tower. As soon as they landed, Green Lantern dismissed the construct, and they moved swiftly into the depths of the buildin.
Inside—
A grotesque sight awaited them.
The walls were lined with racks of pods, each filled with humans trapped within a sickening, amber-hued liquid. Their forms twitched and shuddered as something slowly, methodically altered their very DNA.
They were being turned into Parademons.
Ctoneri's eyes narrowed.
Diana stepped forward, her hand trembling slightly. "By the gods…"
She made a move toward one of the pods, but Batman grabbed her wrist
"Wait," he said sharply."We don't know if releasing them will harm them—or if it will alert our enemies."
A sharp scream echoed through the air.
Ctoneri's head snapped in the direction of the sound, His superior hearing picked up the unmistakable voice of Superman.
"He's down that way."
He pointed down a dimly lit corridor.
"Let's go."
He turned to Diana. "We'll come back for them. I promise."
She hesitated but nodded.
They moved quickly.
---
Inside the Lab
Superman's body strained against the pain.
He was hooked to an open pod, his body partially submerged in some kind of mutagenic fluid. Green, vein-like tendrils slithered over his skin, trying to burrow into him, but his body—his will—resisted.
Still—
It hurt.
His mind swam in agony.
A voice pulled him back.
"The Parademon hives on Earth were ill-equipped to process your flesh."
Superman's blurry vision locked onto the twisted form of Desaad, who stood before a control panel, fingers delicately tuning dials and pressing buttons.
"A being such as yourself requires a more… delicate touch, Kryptonian," Desaad sneered. "But here, in my personal laboratory, I can splice your genetic code… to create something greater. A Super-Parademon… to serve Lord Darkseid."
A cluster of wires slithered across Superman's face, connecting to his temples. He felt his strength draining.
Desaad chuckled. "And once we have our champion, we will seize the others… especially that new one. Yes, our lord will be very pleased."
"All hail Darkseid."
Superman gasped, his vision blurring further. His eyes flickered pale green, his breath shallow.
Desaad stepped forward. "True, the metamorphosis is painful… but soon, you will feel nothing ever again."
"Is that so?"
The voice was calm.
Desaad froze.
He turned—
Standing in the doorway, dragging two limp Parademons behind him, was Ctoneri.
Behind him, Batman stalked forward, and from above, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern descended, their eyes locked on Superman.
"Free him," Batman commanded.
Desaad smirked—and pulled a knife from his robes.
Ctoneri didn't hesitate.
A mere flick of his fingers—a weak Shinra Tensei.
The force sent the blade flying, clattering uselessly to the ground.
Before Desaad could react, Batman moved in, grabbing him by the throat, lifting him off the ground with shocking ease.
Desaad choked but grinned through the pain.
"Impressive, champions of Earth," he rasped. "But once the transformation begins, it cannot be stopped. Your friend is gone. And with his power, Apokolips will consume your world—just as it has done to countless others."
Batman's free hand slid behind his back—
A baton morphed into a knife.
He pressed it against Desaad's throat.
Desaad's grin faltered. "Oh, you wouldn't dare—"
SCHLICK.
Three black rods impaled his knees.
Another pinned him to the console behind him.
Batman dropped him in shock, turning toward Ctoneri. "What are you doing?"
Ctoneri's expression was icy.
"You're wasting time." His eyes gleamed. "Move. I'll handle it."
Before Batman could object—
A warning siren blared.
A massive door slid open.
From the shadows, a Boom Tube flared to life.
Two figures stepped forward.
One—short and stout with a wild mane like hair, with a hulking body.
The other—tall and broad, his sheer size rivaling even Darkseid himself.
Ctoneri exhaled, while looking at the two.
Desaad coughed. "Steppenwolf… Kalibak… get rid of them. Nothing must stop our lord's plan."
Kalibak growled, his lips curling. "Do not presume to command us, Desaad."
His gaze landed on Superman—still struggling in his restraints—and then flicked to Green Lantern. "A Lantern? Why is one of you here?"
Steppenwolf's expression remained unreadable. "No matter. We shall rid Apokolips of this vermin."
Ctoneri glanced between the two, tilting his head. 'There's a joke in here somewhere… What would Wally or Dick say in this situation?'
He finally muttered, "…So, what's the deal? One of you gets really tall when the other gets really short?"
A long pause.
Green Lantern blinked. "Dude, that's not how it goes."
Batman exhaled sharply. "All of you. Focus."
Steppenwolf wasted no time. He lunged, axe crackling with lightning, bringing it down toward Ctoneri in a devastating overhead slash.
Kalibak, seizing the distraction, swung a massive fist at Green Lantern.
Hal barely had time to raise a shield, protecting himself and Diana.
As the axe neared Ctoneri, he whispered, "Shinra Tensei."
A crushing gravitational force erupted from him.
Steppenwolf was sent hurtling backward, crashing into Desaad and the console. The impact sent both of them sprawling.
Kalibak barely had time to register the incoming projectile before Steppenwolf's body slammed into him, launching them both through the wall.
The shockwave rattled the room. The force cracked Superman's pod, sending green sparks flying.
Ctoneri glanced back. "Take him," he ordered, motioning to Superman.
Then, without hesitation, he jumped through the gaping hole, ready to finish the fight.
What he didn't see—what none of them saw—was Superman slowly rising from his pod… his once-blue eyes now a dull, eerie green.
