Chapter 48: 48. Old Friend Fuguki Suikazan
"So, Kirigakure is planning to run away, huh?"
High above the battlefield, Shimura Danzo hovered in the air, his body partially dispersing into paper fragments, a result of his mastery over Paper Release. From this vantage point, he observed several large sailing ships approaching the harbor.
There were no ninja aboard these ships. This meant they weren't for deploying reinforcements—they were here to evacuate the Kirigakure forces back to the Land of Water.
"Looks like Minato and his forces did a great job."
Danzo quickly made the correct deduction.
The only reason Kirigakure would choose to retreat was if Minato Namikaze had utterly overwhelmed them in battle.
But simply forcing them to retreat wasn't enough for Danzo.
He wanted more.
With that thought, he descended from the sky, his body breaking apart into a swarm of paper sheets that scattered into the wind.
---
In the Forest Near the Harbor
"I heard the front lines collapsed."
A Kirigakure Anbu ninja, his face hidden behind a featureless mask, suddenly spoke up. His tone carried a deep sigh, revealing his frustration despite his unreadable expression.
His partner, another masked ninja, seemed to share the same mood.
"Why else would so many of our comrades be retreating? Orders from above say we need to start preparing for an evacuation."
Their assignment was to remain hidden and guard key strategic points around the Kirigakure encampment.
In the past few days, they had seen countless Kirigakure ninjas fleeing back to camp.
Or, as the higher-ups called it—a "strategic withdrawal."
"Damn… I was hoping to finish this war and go back home to marry Shiran."
The first Anbu ninja muttered, sounding almost wistful.
But after waiting for a response, he realized his partner wasn't replying.
His brows furrowed. A sudden sense of unease crept into his mind.
He slowly turned his head—
Suddenly, countless paper fragments erupted from the bushes behind him, wrapping around his body like a swarm of bandages, tightly mummifying him in an instant!
Only a single wide, terrified eye was left exposed.
After ensuring that neither of the two could send any warning signals, the scattered paper fragments slowly reformed into Danzo's silhouette within the dense undergrowth.
"Why do people love setting up death flags?"
Danzo sighed as he looked down at the ninja who had just been bragging about getting married.
This guy was like the old general on the stage who always got killed after saying he would return home safely.
And sure enough—he was next.
Danzo slowly removed the Anbu ninja's mask.
In that instant, his eyes flashed crimson—
The three tomoe within his Sharingan began spinning, drawing the trapped ninja's consciousness into a genjutsu.
His willpower collapsed, and Danzo successfully extracted all the necessary intel.
"A status check every two hours, huh?"
Danzo narrowed his eyes slightly.
Kirigakure Anbu pairs operated on a strict schedule—every two hours, a designated scouting unit would check on them to ensure everything was normal.
It had already been half an hour since the last check-in.
That meant Danzo had about an hour and a half before the next team came.
If he took any longer, Kirigakure would notice something was wrong.
After confirming all the details, Danzo swiftly changed into the stolen Anbu uniform and mask.
Then, with precise knowledge of their codes and patrol routes (thanks to genjutsu), he blended seamlessly into the Kirigakure encampment.
With the chaos of retreating soldiers, the entire camp was in disarray.
Danzo used this opportunity to move toward the transport ships, intending to plant explosive tags and sink them before they could escape.
But he soon encountered one major problem.
To board the transport ships, one needed a password.
Danzo couldn't find the corresponding intel in the mind of the Anbu ninja he was impersonating.
It was likely that this Anbu was only responsible for monitoring the camp's perimeter and had no authorization to board the transport ships.
Given the situation, forcing his way in was not an option.
After all, his goal was to secretly plant explosive tags on the ships and give Kirigakure a "big surprise."
If he alerted the enemy, it would ruin his entire plan.
So, based on the intelligence he had gathered, he sought out his newly acquainted "old friend"—Fuguki Suikazan
---
At that moment, Fuguki Suikazan was overseeing the transport of critical supplies onto the ships.
Suddenly, an Anbu ninja wearing a mask approached him, claiming to be an "old friend."
Suspicious, Fuguki Suikazan followed the masked ninja into a private room—
And when he saw the old, familiar face of Shimura Danzo beneath the mask, he almost spat out blood!
"Lord Fuguki, we meet again."
Danzo greeted him with politeness and grace, like a gentleman addressing an old acquaintance.
But Fuguki Suikazan was far from amused.
His expression twisted with fury, and he suppressed his voice with sheer effort.
His clenched teeth and murderous gaze made it clear that he wanted nothing more than to tear Danzo to pieces.
"Why the hell are you here?!"
Danzo simply smirked.
After all, Fuguki was still young—a little emotional outburst was to be expected.
So, he countered with a calm remark:
"If I weren't here, wouldn't that make all your hard work meaningless?"
At those words, Fuguki's face darkened.
Of course, he understood exactly what Danzo meant by "hard work."
But what he had expected was for Danzo to lead a surprise attack on the harbor—
Not to sneak around and show up in front of him like a damn ghost!
He had no interest in dealing with this troublesome bastard.
Glaring daggers at Danzo, Fuguki growled:
"I don't care what you're planning, but don't show your face in front of me!"
Danzo narrowed his eyes slightly.
"Of course. But before that, I'll need a little favor from you."
"Absolutely not!"
Fuguki rejected him instantly, not even bothering to think about it.
"I told you, whatever you're scheming has nothing to do with me. Don't involve me!"
Danzo sighed in disappointment.
"If that's the case… then I suppose I'll have to hand this map—marked with your chakra signature—over to Lord Mizukage."
Fuguki's fists clenched. Hard.
"Are you threatening me?"
Danzo's smirk deepened, his mocking expression resembling that of a devil reveling in his schemes.
He casually tossed his mask in the air and remarked in an almost indifferent tone:
"You of all people should know—betrayal is either zero times… or countless times."
That line completely shattered Fuguki's composure.
His voice turned ice-cold as he threatened:
"And you're not afraid that I'll expose you right now and use your head to atone for my sins?"
Danzo laughed.
It was a mocking, unrestrained laugh, full of contempt.
As Fuguki glared at him in frustration, Danzo's laughter gradually subsided.
Then, with a calm, piercing gaze, he locked eyes with Fuguki and spoke with quiet confidence:
"You sure about that?"
His dark, unwavering stare seemed to drill into Fuguki's soul.
"If you've got the guts, go ahead—try it."
That absolute self-assurance sent a chill down Fuguki's spine.
In that moment, fragments of past battles flashed through his mind—
He remembered how Danzo had effortlessly slain Mangetsu Hozuki,
How he had miraculously survived Jinpachi's explosive tag onslaught,
How he had appeared behind his enemy in the blink of an eye and delivered an instant kill.
Would trying to take down Danzo now just end in another bizarre escape on his part?
