The thaumaturge

Chapter 8: contemplation

Slowly the gem started being insterted the other gem making it so my wound would close around the VAMPIRISM gem. I could no longer go back, I had become closer to becoming inhuman. I was now closer to what they called the undead than what people call a human. I was an undying monster through the FULL RECOVERY gem and I ate blood through the new VAMPIRISM gem I had just engraved. Would my wife still love me for what I am now, I knew I would not, I would not love me for what I had turned into. I could now eat but what had it cost me, myself?

But I could not dwell on it for longer, if I did I could lose more than just myself. I was lost and I had to find my way. I had to find my wife, she would know what to do. Maybe she was out here somewhere and maybe she had already died. But I knew I could not just give up and if she had died I could revive her into something of my own creation through thaumaturgy.

But I had to go now I would go outside roll some more peoples pockets and buy some clothes.

I walked to the door of my roomand opened it closing it behind me while making sure no one had secretly made it so my door would not fully close after I had opened, I felt some wind rush past my ear. I walked through the hallway my abnormally heightened sences that came through the VAMPIRISM gem, made me notice tha there was a human sitting at the exit of the hallway but I could not see him with my eyes, a type of invisibility I guessed. I had tried to make gems that could allow me to go invisible but I had failed every time. It was a task I was unable of completing. I would love to see how this man made the gem.

I walked up to him and said: "Hello I would like to know how you went invisible and what pattern you used, is there a specific gem size required." I knew I should not just approach them the would be weird but my curiosity got the better of me. I looked him dead in the eyes awaiting a response. He looked at me in suprise that I could see him this had never happend to him.

He then answered: "What do you mean gem size, gems havent been mainstream since like magic was introduced to the wider public, I just cast the spell invisbility from the illusion field of magic. It is not a very difficult spell if you want to learn how to do it just go to the library and learn from there I do not have time for you." He said it in a snarky manner so I just departed.

I wondered what he had said, just this conversation had given me alot to think about. That magic existed in this world and within that magic there are multiple schools of magic and one of those schools is illusion magic. I also learnt that my craft which I had perfected, was no obsolete replaced by the thing they called magic.

I walked through the city thinking to myself pickpocketing had gotten alot harder due to the VAMPIRISM gem, it made it so I was around 2 times as weak as my old self in daylight. It would be nicer to wait until it was night but that would be impossible as then the stores would close and the whole reason I came here would be naught.

I walked towards a store making sure to steal some money from the people I walked by avoiding the richest people as they usually would have a escort whose eyes seemed to dart around the crowd to make sure no one would pickpocket their client or attack them. I only went for the poor, not that I wanted this to be the case I would love to only steal from the rich but that was imposible.

Then I arrived infront of a clothing store around 3 floors in size, the top floor probably a floor where people live. It did not seem to fancy which was very nice, I hoped I could get some clothes with just the 5 silver and 12 copper I had in my pockets. As I walked through the door I noticed a double breasted black frock coat with a nice silken half top hat for the price of only 1 silver.

I grabbed it and walked towards the counter of the store and put the single silver on the counter prepared to buy it. She looked at me took the silver and told me: "Take that cursed thing and make sure to never bring it back." She walked to back of her store and I heard her give a quick prayer towards the person who had just bought the item, me.

I walked home inspecting what she so hated about the black double breasted frock coat. It looked fine from the outside maybe from the inside it had been tempered with. As I reached my room the invisible man was still sitting in the same place not having moved a muscle, I greated him with a jolly smile of gold. He just simply said hello in a monotonous tone.

As I reached my room I got ready to start inspecting the inside of the coat from a closer angle than I had done on the streets but first my spoils from robbing people. 40 copper 20 silver and 1 gold.
