Chapter 4: I Can’t Hide It Anymore
Ji Feng's parents had arrived.
Seeing the elderly man approaching her house, Xia Ling immediately said, "I won't be playing mahjong today. Everyone should head home."
The scale of the arrival made it clear what was happening. The neighbors nodded in understanding.
"We'll be off then."
"Let us know if you need anything."
"We're all neighbors. If you're in trouble, tell us. This is a law-abiding society."
"Thank you for your kindness. Everything's fine. We'll see you later," Xia Ling replied with a smile.
The mahjong players dispersed, but they didn't go far. They all lived nearby and were eager to see how things unfolded.
The old man, though his hair was gray, moved with surprising strength and purpose. His tailored suit exuded a distinguished air. He walked steadily toward Ji Jun and Xia Ling.
Ignoring the curious onlookers, the old man bowed deeply to them.
"Eldest Young Master, Madam, after all these years, I've finally found you."
Master? Madam?
The old man's words and actions stunned the neighbors.
This sudden turn of events shocked everyone.
They'd all lived in this small town for over twenty years. How could Ji Jun and Xia Ling suddenly become "Eldest Young Master" and "Madam"?
Ji Jun and Xia Ling, however, remained composed.
"Uncle Wang, after all these years, you're still going strong," Ji Jun said with a chuckle.
"Uncle Wang, with your seniority, we can't accept such a greeting," Xia Ling added with a smile.
The old man, known as Uncle Wang, was immediately overcome with emotion.
With so many neighbors watching, this wasn't the place for a private conversation. Ji Jun gestured for the old man to come inside.
The bodyguards he'd brought stood guard at the door, radiating an air of authority.
Xia Ling made tea for the old man.
"Thank you, Madam," he said, then looked around the modest home and sighed. "I never imagined you two would be living like this. Eldest Young Master, Madam, I truly feel you've been wronged."
"Don't feel sorry for us, Uncle Wang," Ji Jun said. "It might not be much, but we're comfortable here."
The old man, Wang Meng, was the Ji family's housekeeper. He had watched Ji Jun grow up and held a respected position in the family—the real Ji family, not the one before him.
"Uncle Wang, let's be frank," Ji Jun said. "After all these years, what brings you here today?"
"Eldest Young Master," Wang Meng replied, "I've come on the orders of the Master to bring you and Madam back to the Ji house and reclaim your inheritance."
"Uncle Wang, it's been so long. If you hadn't come today, I would have forgotten I was ever the Eldest Young Master of the Ji family. Go back and tell my father he's better off handling the family business himself," Ji Jun said.
Wang Meng sighed inwardly. He'd anticipated this response, but he also had a strategy.
"Eldest Young Master," he pleaded, "the Master said that he was wrong all those years ago. He's given me strict orders. If you and Madam don't return, I won't be able to face him."
Years ago, Ji Jun, as the Eldest Young Master, was the heir apparent to the Ji family fortune.
Xia Ling was from a humble background. Ji Jun, however, was already engaged.
When he brought Xia Ling home, the Ji family learned of their relationship and vehemently opposed it. The other family, the Huangs, were also a powerful clan, and breaking off the engagement was no small matter.
So, Ji Jun and Xia Ling, in defiance, left the Ji family and came to this small town to live in seclusion.
That was over twenty years ago!
Ji Jun fell silent.
He couldn't deny his feelings for his father and his childhood home. But returning meant facing the inevitable power struggles and intrigues of a wealthy family.
"Uncle Wang," Xia Ling said, "can we have some time to discuss this?"
"Of course, Madam," Wang Meng replied quickly. "The Master also said that when you return, he will personally apologize for what happened all those years ago."
"Wife?" Ji Jun was surprised. He hadn't expected Xia Ling to say that. She usually disliked family drama and valued their peaceful life.
"Come here. I need to talk to you," Xia Ling said, pulling Ji Jun's arm.
They went into the bedroom, leaving Wang Meng to wait in the living room.
Inside the bedroom, Ji Jun asked, "What is it? Do you want to go back? I thought you hated all that family stuff."
"You're right," Xia Ling replied, "but things are different now."
"How so?" Ji Jun was confused.
"You're so dense," Xia Ling said. "We have a troublesome son now." She explained, "We've kept the truth about our family from him, letting him think we were poor. But that's not working anymore. He even signed a contract to be a live-in son-in-law! If we don't get some of the family's wealth for him, won't he be looked down on by his wife's family?"
"You're right. How could I forget that?" Ji Jun exclaimed.
Though they had wanted to stay out of family affairs, things had changed. They had a son who'd not only gotten a girl pregnant but also agreed to live with her family.
He was probably blinded by the flashiness of modern life, coveting the easy life, thinking he could avoid hard work by marrying into a rich family.
"You're right, wife," Ji Jun said solemnly. "For our son, I have to go back and claim what's rightfully ours. I need to pave the way for his future."
"Yes," Xia Ling nodded, a hint of melancholy in her voice. "It's all for him. We can't let him keep thinking we're just an ordinary family."
And so, for Ji Feng's sake, they agreed to return to the Ji house with Wang Meng. They would reclaim their assets and let Ji Feng know that he wasn't just a regular second-generation rich kid—he was several generations deep into wealth.
Having reached a decision, they emerged from the bedroom.
Seeing them, Wang Meng stood up and asked, "Eldest Young Master, Madam, have you come to a decision?"
"Yes, we have," Ji Jun replied with a smile. "We'll pack tonight and leave tomorrow."
Wang Meng beamed. "I'll book your flights from the nearest airport in Gimhae City."
Ji Jun and Xia Ling readily agreed.
"By the way," Wang Meng asked, "what about Young Master Sun?"
Ji Jun and Xia Ling had lived in seclusion for years. Wang Meng assumed they'd had children. He remembered Xia Ling's pregnancy when they left the Ji house.
"He's graduated college and works in Gimhae City," Ji Jun replied.
"Perfect! We can bring Young Master Sun back to the Ji house as well," Wang Meng said, smiling. "The Master will be thrilled to see him."
"I'll talk to him about it first," Ji Jun said.
Once they arrived in Gimhae City, he and Xia Ling would have a serious conversation with Ji Feng about that live-in son-in-law contract.
