Chapter 30: Vermillion city
The sun shone brightly overhead as Ethan stepped onto the main road leading into Vermilion City, the bustling harbor town he had been traveling toward for days.
The forest behind him had given way to rolling fields and the salty tang of the ocean breeze. He could see the outlines of ships bobbing in the distance and hear the faint cries of Wingull soaring above the harbor.
Turning to his Pokémon, Ethan decided it was time to streamline the group for easier travel through the busy city streets. He reached for his Pokéballs and called out to Scyther, Spearow, and Magikarp.
"Great work today, you three," Ethan said, smiling warmly. "Rest up for now. I'll call you out when we need you."
Scyther, ever loyal, nodded before the familiar red light pulled it back into its Pokéball. Spearow let out a small chirp, ruffling its feathers before disappearing in a flash of red. Even Magikarp, who had been the focus of a lot of training lately, was safely returned.
That left Ethan with Sylveon walking at his side, ribbons swaying gently with each step, while Cleffa and Dratini remained out.
Cleffa trotted happily near Ethan's feet, humming a cheerful tune, while Dratini coiled lightly around Ethan's arm, its eyes scanning the new sights around them with curiosity.
"Alright, you three," Ethan said, adjusting his backpack. "Let's head into the city. First stop: the Pokémon Center."
Vermilion City
As Ethan stepped into Vermilion City proper, he was greeted by the lively hum of activity. The city was vibrant and bustling, with trainers moving between buildings, chatting excitedly about their recent battles or trades.
Stalls lined the streets, offering everything from berries to TMs, and shopkeepers called out their wares in loud, enthusiastic voices.
Sylveon's ears twitched as it walked, clearly alert to the new environment. Cleffa bounced excitedly, while Dratini looked around with wide eyes, its head swiveling to take in every new sight.
The Pokémon Center stood prominently near the middle of town, its red roof shining brightly under the afternoon sun.
Ethan made his way inside, greeted by the familiar, comforting scent of disinfectant and the cheerful hum of Nurse Joy's voice.
"Hello! Welcome to the Pokémon Center," Nurse Joy said with a warm smile.
"Hi," Ethan said, placing his Pokéballs on the counter. "Could you give them a quick check-up? They've been training hard."
"Of course," Nurse Joy replied, taking the Pokéballs and handing them off to a Chansey.
Ethan glanced at Sylveon, who was watching Nurse Joy attentively. "You've been working hard too," he said, crouching down to pat its head. "Once they're all rested, maybe we'll grab something to eat and explore the city a bit more."
Sylveon purred contentedly, leaning into his touch.
Exploring the Harbor
After retrieving his team from the Pokémon Center, Ethan decided to explore Vermilion City further.
He made his way toward the harbor, where the ocean stretched endlessly, its surface sparkling under the sunlight.
Cleffa ran ahead, chasing after stray Wingull that flitted low to the ground. Dratini stayed coiled around Ethan's shoulders now, its serpentine body relaxed as it enjoyed the ocean breeze.
Ethan stopped at the edge of the dock, gazing out at the horizon. He couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment at finally reaching Vermilion City, but he also knew this was only the beginning.
"This place feels... alive," Ethan murmured to himself. Sylveon nudged him gently with its ribbon, as if agreeing.
Nearby, trainers were engaged in battles, their Pokémon fighting against the backdrop of the sea. Ethan couldn't resist watching for a moment, his competitive spirit already stirring.
"Not yet," he said softly, shaking his head. "Let's rest and get stronger first. The battles can wait."
He turned his attention back to Cleffa and Dratini, who were now playfully tugging at a loose fishing net that had been left by the dock.
"Hey, leave that alone," Ethan called out with a chuckle, walking over to scoop up Cleffa.
Cleffa giggled, clearly proud of its mischief, while Dratini let out a soft trill of amusement.
As the sun began to set, painting the city in shades of orange and gold, Ethan made his way back to the Pokémon Center.
The day had been long, but fulfilling, and he knew tomorrow would bring new challenges and opportunities.
Sitting down at one of the tables inside the Pokémon Center, Ethan released his Pokémon once more to share a meal.
Sylveon, Cleffa, Dratini, Scyther, Spearow, and Magikarp gathered around him, each one taking turns enjoying the treats Ethan had prepared.
"Here's to us," Ethan said, raising a bottle of water in mock toast. "We've come a long way, but this is just the start. Vermilion City's going to be where we take things to the next level."
His Pokémon chirped, hummed, and buzzed in agreement, their bond with Ethan shining through in their responses.
