The Recorder of Type-Moon History

Chapter 77: 77: Release to the Pacific Ocean

As the night deepened, the moonlight bathed the icy battlefield in a cold, silvery glow. Kevin and Skadi stood resolutely before Shaki, the towering mountain giant whose burly form loomed like a shadow over the castle.

Shaki's piercing gaze shifted between his daughter and the black-haired youth holding his ground. His expression, hardened with centuries of battles, betrayed only a flicker of intrigue as he met Kevin's defiant eyes.

"You stand here to stop me," Shaki stated. His voice, low and rumbling like distant thunder, carried no trace of surprise.

"Yes," Kevin replied firmly. "Because your choice will never lead to Skadi's happiness."

"Foolishness," Shaki retorted, his eyes narrowing. "Do you think I act without understanding? My decision ensures her safety—a guarantee only my sacrifice can provide!"

Kevin shook his head, undeterred by the giant's formidable presence. "Have you asked her? Do you believe she could ever accept this outcome, knowing it cost her father's life?"

At this, Shaki turned his gaze to Skadi. Her crimson eyes met his briefly before he looked away, the faintest trace of conflict visible in his expression.

Skadi couldn't help but laugh softly. "So, Father, even you have doubts."

"Enough!" Shaki's booming voice silenced the momentary levity. He turned back to Kevin, his patience clearly wearing thin. "Move aside, boy. This is not your fight."

Kevin straightened his stance, unwavering. "You think I'll stand down now?"

"You're courting death!" Shaki growled, his immense presence casting an almost palpable shadow. "I have no quarrel with you, but if you persist..."

Kevin held his ground. Despite the crushing weight of Shaki's aura, his expression remained resolute.

"You confuse me, human," Shaki admitted, his tone begrudgingly respectful. "You gain nothing by opposing me. My death would simplify your trial and bring you closer to your goal—the blood of Fenrir. Yet, here you are. Why?"

Kevin smirked faintly, his hand tightening around the hilt of his magic sword, Vlaglak. "Sometimes, you don't need a grand reason to act. Part of it is Skadi, yes. But mostly... I just can't stand it."

"Can't stand it?" Shaki's brows furrowed.

Kevin nodded. "Your story—a father sacrificing himself for his daughter, a daughter forced to accept her father's death as the price of her freedom. It's too bitter, too dull."

The young warrior's smirk widened. "Frankly, I find it boring."

"BORING?!" Shaki roared, his voice shaking the earth. Rage flickered in his eyes, yet it was tempered by disbelief. "You dare mock my decision with such triviality? Do you even comprehend what it means to defy a giant warrior?"

"Giant or not," Kevin countered, drawing his sword with a metallic hiss, "I am the son of Ruge, the god of light and the sun, chosen by the gods of the Danann to be their next king. My father slew countless giants in the war against the deep-sea clans, including their king."

Kevin raised his sword, his tone challenging. "As his son, it's about time I killed one myself."

Shaki roared in anger, his hair bristling as his immense power surged.

"You've succeeded in enraging me, boy," Shaki bellowed. His gaze shifted to Skadi. "And you, my daughter—do you stand with this insolent human against me?"

Skadi sighed and rolled her eyes at Kevin. "Must you always provoke people so recklessly?"

Ignoring his antics, she took a deep breath, and the air around her dropped sharply in temperature. Snow began to fall, covering the ground in a frosty sheen. Within moments, the once serene night transformed into a winter battlefield.

Kevin felt the temperature plummet, his breath visible in the chill air. Watching Skadi wield her powers for the first time, he couldn't help but be impressed—even awestruck.

But admiration quickly turned to alarm as Shaki, encased in a thin layer of frost from Skadi's attack, shattered it effortlessly with a flex of his muscles.

"Kevin, MOVE!" Skadi shouted.

Kevin leaped aside just as Shaki hurled a chunk of ice toward him. The impact shattered a massive boulder behind him, sending debris flying in all directions.

Kevin barely had time to breathe. Gripping his sword tightly, he began inscribing runes into the air with swift, practiced movements. Magic flared around him, shrouding his body in a golden aura as his connection with Slude poured energy into him.

But Shaki was relentless. He raised his massive stone axe and charged, the ground quaking beneath his feet. Kevin met him head-on, their weapons clashing with a deafening crash.

The force sent Kevin flying backward into a tree, blood spraying from his lips. His ribs ached from the impact, but he forced himself to stand.

Skadi, seeing Kevin injured, redoubled her efforts. Summoning a blizzard, she unleashed wave after wave of ice spikes, creating a dazzling display of frost and fury.

Though her attacks were ineffective in harming her father, they bought Kevin precious moments to recover.

"Skadi, keep him occupied!" Kevin shouted, wiping blood from his mouth.

He drew his magic spear from the void, its crimson light tinged with the golden energy of Slude's blessings. Assuming a ready stance, he hurled the spear with all his might.

"Piercing Death Thorn Spear!"

The spear streaked through the air like a comet, its tip aimed unerringly at Shaki's heart.

Shaki, unfazed, snatched the spear out of the air with a single hand. The ground beneath him cracked and splintered, but his expression remained calm. With a disdainful flick, he tossed the spear aside.

"Is that all?" Shaki mocked.

Kevin didn't respond. He was already preparing his next move.

Gripping his sword tightly, he began channeling more magic into it. Golden energy swirled around the blade, growing brighter and more intense with each passing second.

Shaki, observing Kevin's preparations, raised an eyebrow. "Interesting... You think that little sword of yours can harm me?"

Unbothered by Skadi's continuing attacks, he stood still, watching Kevin with a curious glint in his eye.

Unbeknownst to Kevin, Shaki was holding back. Though he appeared menacing, he had yet to unleash his true strength. As a giant mage, his mastery of spells far outstripped the physical power he was showing.

Skadi, too, began to notice her father's restraint. Her attacks landed without much resistance, yet he didn't retaliate. Instead, he waited, almost as if humoring Kevin.

"Kevin..." Skadi called out, her voice tinged with worry.

But Kevin didn't falter. Pouring every ounce of his energy into the sword, he raised it high, the golden light illuminating the battlefield.

With a shout, he unleashed the pent-up energy in a single, decisive slash.

A blinding arc of light surged toward Shaki, cutting through the frost-filled air with overwhelming force.

For the first time, Shaki frowned, sensing genuine danger from the attack.

As the golden wave bore down on him, Shaki gripped his axe tightly and prepared to face the onslaught head-on.

At that moment, Kevin smirked.

"Time to see how much of the Pacific Ocean you're willing to release."
