Chapter 5: Birthday Surprise
[NOTICE: Takes Place One Year Before Episode 01: "A Lying Witch and a Warden"]
It was late in the afternoon, and Eda was actually humming a pleasant tune as she stirred something in an aged cauldron in the kitchen.
At that moment, King walked in. "(*deep inhale*) something sure smells good." said King.
"Oh, Hi, King." said Eda. "yes, I'm making a cake."
This got King excited. "FOR ME!?, I am most pleased with this tribute."
Eda chuckled. "No, King. It isn't for you (though, you can have a piece if you'd like.)"
King crossed his arms, looking mildly peeved.
"Do you know what day it is today?" asked Eda.
King took a moment to ponder. "ehhh.."
"Today is Olivier's BIRTHDAY!" said Eda, raising her wooden spoon up like a wand.
"OR, to be more accurate: The anniversary of the night I found him as a baby so long ago."
"Oh, YEAH.." said King. "That's today!?"
"YES." said Eda. "And, I need you to do something for me."
King eyed Eda. "DEPENDS. What is it?"
Eda resumed stirring the cake batter. "I need you to take Olivier, and run a few errands in town.
It will take some time to get everything ready, and I need you to keep Olivier away from the house for awhile."
"I don't know.." mused King. "seems like alot of effort."
"do it, and there's a keg of midnight sludge in it for you." said Eda, bluntly.
"GIMME THAT LIST OF ERRANDS!" exclaimed King.
Eda actually did hand King a list. "I need all this things delivered to the appropriate addresses.
If you and Olivier do it right, you both should be back by sundown. PLENTY of time to get ready."
"fine.." said King, as he snatched the list. "That keg of Midnight Sludge had better be HUUUUGE!"
Eda smirked, amused at someone as small as King acting so big, and fearsome.
"Okay, run along now. This cake isn't going to fix itself...YET." Eda then drew a spell circle,
bringing the rest of the cake ingredients to life. "Alright, everyone into the pot!"
The ingredients all ran away screaming their tiny heads off.
"why do I keep thinking that's gonna work?" mused Eda, annoyed.
King busted open the door into Olivier room where he found him still sleeping.
Though, rather than sleeping on his bed, the thirteen year old boy was asleep at a desk.
"WAKE UP, OLIVIER!" exclaimed King, loudly.
"GAH!" exclaimed Olivier, startled awake. "huh?!, wa-What!?"
"We got stuff to do in town!" said King, looking up at the boy.
"Eda wants us to make some deliveries in Bonesborough, so, HOP TO IT!"
Olivier sighed sharply. "Okay..OKAY. just give me a few minutes to get dressed."
"Okay, but DON'T keep the "KING of Demons" waiting for TOO LONG!" said King, as he turned to leave.
Olivier breathed a sigh of relief once King left, leaving him alone in his solitude.
He rubbed his cheek. Which was now red and sore from sleeping on his hard, wooden desk.
Olivier took a moment to quickly look over the many papers that lay before him.
..ALL were exerpts and note on Curses (particular the ones involving 'Transmutation.')
Olivier sighed sharply. once again, he hit a dead end on his research of whatever curse that was afflicting his mother.
Granted, he was a kid. and, there was only so much he was capable of understanding.
But, it frustrated him that he couldn't figure out how to lift his mother's curse.
Olivier let out a sigh as he quickly hid his papers away.
He then stood up, and looked at the clothes that he was wearing.
Per usual, his clothing was his mother's old clothes from her childhood.
And, currently his dark hooded tunic looked like it had been dug from the garbage.
He could try cleaning it..which would take some time..OR-
With both eyes and hair glowing yellow, Olivier used both fingers to draw spell circles.
His clothes glowed gold for a moment, before flashing. going from Dirty, to Clean in a matter of seconds.
..Olivier became light headed as a result of his spell.
"ugh..w-worth it." muttered Olivier, as he finally left his room.
***[Bonesborough Delivery Service Montage]***
"..for the LAST TIME. I did not order a GIANT TRAMPOLINE!" exclaimed an old man with hundreds of eyes.
Olivier and King glared at the old man. "Well, you could've told us that BEFORE we set it up."
The old man growled as he turned, and left in a huff.
"well, that could've gone better.." spoke Olivier to King. "at least we got a few snails out of it."
King scoffed. "If you had let ME do all the talking, we both could've gotten some Crabs."
Some random bystanders stared at the two as if they just witnessed something unspeakable.
"(*SMACK!*) NEVER..say that sentence again. EVER." said Olivier, mildly embarrassed.
King rubbed his skull. "fine..give me the snails, and I'll out it with the others."
"Okay, here you go-WAIT." spoke Olivier. "WHERE exactly are you keeping our earnings? You don't have any pockets!"
King looked up at Olivier with a blunt expression. "In my SOCK, of course."
Olivier starred at the impish demon. "but..you're NAKED!, where do you keep your SOCK!?"
King scowled. "that..is none of your damn business."
Olivier rolled his eyes. "FINE..here you go." Olivier handed King the small bag of coins.
King took the coins, and..*stashed them away somewhere.*
"Oh. so THAT'S where you keep them." said Olivier, astonished.
King checked Eda's list. "Okay..we have one more delivery to make, and we'll be done."
"THANK. TITAN." said Olivier. "I thought this would *Never* end."
a Little while later, Olivier and King were in Market Street at the stand of a Goat-like man.
"OKAY, that's Two Crates of Snake Oil." spoke Olivier. "That'll be two bags of Snails, please."
The Goat Man grinned in a very suspicious manner as he handed his payment.
"Excellent. Say...you seem like an inquisitive fellow." began the Goat Man.
"Might I interest you in one of my many curiosities? It's Freeeee.."
"no, thanks." said Olivier.
"Oh, but I insist.." said the Goat Man. "SURELY I have something that may interest you."
"I doubt it-"
"How about a HEAD that's always screaming?"
Sure enough, the Goat Man brought out a disembodies head that frequently screamed loudly.
(("GYAAAAAAHHH!, GYAAAAAAHHH!, GYAAAAAAHHH!"))
"why would I ever want that?" said Olivier, bluntly.
"Not your thing, huh? Okay..How about THESE." The Goat Man present a pair of stylized scissors.
"These Trans-Dimensional Scissors can cut into the very fabric of reality itself.
Transporting you to any dimension that you wish..OR, perhaps even surprise you."
"COOL!" exclaimed King.
"Yeah, not interested." said Olivier, bluntly. "Don't get me wrong, they're cool and all..
But, my mom already has a key that opens up a literal dimensional doorway.
Scissors that can cut into reality sound...morally questionable, and all kinds of illegal."
The Goat Man grinned. "ah..Bright Boy. there is no pulling the wool over your eyes, is there?
Well, not to worry, child..I have saved the BEST oddity for last."
The Goat man then dug through his things, and soon brough over something wrapped in a white cloth.
As he unwrapped the cloth, Olivier gazed at small chest with strange engravings and ornamented with three gems.
"what is it?" asked Olivier.
"Oh, this? It's a Magical Music Box." spoke the Goat Man. "Said to play a mystic melody that brings immeasurable knowledge."
"Really?" spoke Olivier, unconvinced.
"Oh, yes." said the Goat Man. "To the point that it is sometimes called: The MUSE-IC BOX."
Olivier paused to ponder this.
While it was VERY possible that this old man was trying to swindle him.
He couldn't help but wonder if this "magic box" really was what he claimed it was.
It was 'free', afterall. so, what did he have to lose?
"Fine. I'll take the fancy jewery box." said Olivier.
"MUSIC Box." corrected the Goat Man.
"WHATEVER, just fork it over, old man."
The Goat Man handed Olivier that wooden box. "a pleasure doing business with you..heh-heh-heh-heh-heh."
As Olivier walked away with King, he looked down at the demon and said: "what a strange old man."
"I can't believe you let him con you like that." said King.
"he didn't CON me." said Olivier. "I didn't pay one cent for this thing.
If anything, *I* scammed him for getting something this good for free!"
King didn't look convinced. "SO, you gonna open up that box?" spoke the Demon.
"I'm curious to see if that piece of junk actually works, and makes you smarter."
Olivier was tempted to open it..BUT, decided against it. "maybe later.."
[Later, Back at The Owl House.]
Olivier returned to the Owl House to find it mysteriously dark, and SILENT.
(even Hooty didn't greet him at the literal door like he usually did.)
"Mom?..H-Hooty?"
Olivier carefully opened the door, and walked inside to a dark room.
All the alarms in his mind were going off all at once.
..and, then-
(("SURPRIIIISSSE!"))
Olivier jumped at the lights suddenly turning on, and his mother appearing in a puff of smoke with a cake in her hands.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, OLIVIER!" exclaimed Eda, with a smile.
Olivier stared for a moment..and, then smiled as he looked down at King.
"YOU were keeping me distracted the whole time, weren't you?" inquired Olivier.
"It was all for the SLUDGE." said King, as he marched off.
Eda set the cake down, and looked to Olivier. She smiled, and then hugged the teenager.
"I almost can't believe it's been Thirteen Years TODAY since the night I found you." said Eda.
"It seems like only yesterday I was feeding Hooty your dirty diapers. NOW, look at you.."
Olivier blushed bright red. "thanks mom." spoke Olivier. "I'm glad that you took a chance with me so we can all be here to celebrate this day."
Eda then frowned. "My only regret is that I couldn't invite any of your friends over."
Olivier stared at his mother. "but..I don't HAVE any other friends."
"EXACTLY." said Eda, clicking her tongue and making 'finger guns'.
"oh, hardy har-har.." said Olivier, feigning laughter.
Eda then sat down with Olivier. "Now, make a wish and blow out your candles."
Olivier stared at the cake. He paused as he made a wish..
..the SAME wish he also made on every other birthday.
Olivier then took a deep breath, and blew out all thirteen candles at once.
((*CLAP!, CLAP!, CLAP!*))
"Okay..time to open your present." spoke Eda, as she brought out a wrapped gift.
Olivier took the gift, and began to rip the paper off. Revealing a box. He then lifted off the lip of the box..revealing it's contents.
Inside was a book..and, a very strange book. It looked mildly aged,
with a burgundy colored leather, and the reflective image of a six fingered hand on the cover.
(..for some reason, the number "2" was painted on said hand.)
"uhhh..what is this?" asked Olivier.
"Something Owlbert brought me when I sent him to collect human things." explained Eda.
"I read it, and it appears to be a hand written journal detailing magic and spells."
Olivier opened a random page in the book, and read it. "a book about HUMAN magic?"
"well, no." said Eda. "MOST Humans can't do magic. But, this was clearly written by a human
who had some understanding on how magic works, and wrote down their own interpretation of it."
Olivier quickly read a chapter detailing 'Mystic Amulets'. "this DOES look interesting."
Eda smiled. "I hoped that it might help you better control your magic." explained Eda.
"Perhaps if you study magic from a human's perspective, you will have an easier time."
Olivier looked up at his mother, and smiled. "thanks..I really appreciate your gift."
Eda smiled. the two then shared a hug.
(("MAIL CALL!, HOOT-HOOT!"))
Eda scowled. "Hooty, NOT NOW..we are having a Mother/Son moment."
(("BUT IT'S A SPECIAL DELIVERY FOR OLIVIER, HOOT!"))
THIS got Olivier's attention. "a delivery for ME?, from who?!"
Hooty didn't answer. the tube-like demon simply gagged, and spat out a package.
despite his mild disgust, Olivier opened the package..to find a wrapped gift and a card.
Olivier took the card, and read it.
"Dear Olivier Clawthorne. Heard it was your thirteenth year today, so here is my gift to you.
I trust you will put it to good use. Your thoughtful Aunt: Lilith Clawthorne."
Eda scoffed at this.
"P.S. ALSO enclosed is yet another letter of recommendation to the Hexside School of-"
Eda quickly snatched the card (and, letter inside) and ignited them.
"OKAY, let's open this sucker, and see what my sister got you." said Eda.
Olivier took the gift, unwrapped it and opened the box..And, inside was yet another book of Magic and Spells.
However, THIS book looked much fancier. and, was adorned with gems on the cover.
This just annoyed Eda.
"I don't know how she knew.." began Eda. "but, I just know that Lilith did this on purpose to spite me."
Olivier snickered in response.
[Later that Night..]
As night fell, Olivier was in his room, resuming his research into his mother's curse.
But, even with TWO different books of spells and magic to use as reference,
he was no closer to uncovering a counter spell to the Owl Curse than he was before.
The boy groaned. feeling extremely frustrated. He never was one to feel hatred against anything..or, Anyone.
but, right now, Olivier felt a burning hatred for whoever cursed his mother so many years ago.
As his eyes started to glow icy blue, Olivier forced himself to calm down.
Getting angry wouldn't fix anything.
Olivier then pulled away from his desk, and let out a deep sigh. Rubbing his temples, he tried to think rationally.
..It was then that his eyes set upon that 'music box' that he acquired from the market.
It all seemed silly..expecting some trinket to suddenly give him wisdom.
But, he was feeling desperate. and, who knows?: maybe some music would clear his head.
Olivier got up, walked over to the box and brought to over to his desk.
He gazed upon the strange, wood carved chest, and began to twist at the key.
..nothing happened.
"what in-" curious, Olivier opened the box to inspect it's inner workings.
..THAT was a mistake.
((*FRAAAASSSHH!*))
Olivier gasped as multi-colored light shot out from the box as the rainbow energy swirled and crackled, Olivier let out a scream..
..Then, came a blinding flash.
As Olivier vision returned..he found himself laying on the ground. His two spell books, and the accursed 'music box' all laying before him.
"ohhhhh...ugh." Olivier groaned as he tried to stand up.
He then gasped upon realizing he wasn't in his own room anymore.
In fact, he wasn't inside ANYWHERE (much less the Owl House), but outside somewhere.
Olivier finally stood up..and found himself somewhere unfamiliar. It didn't look like he was in the Boiling Isles anymore.
..in fact, the environment was lush, GREEN, and quite humid.
"what in-"
((*SCREEEEEEE!*))
Olivier ducked as a titan sized bird swooped over, and flew past him.
the witch boy stared, his mouth gaped open as he watched the creature depart.
After a brief moment, Olivier then caught eye of a moss covered sign post.
Wanting answered, Olivier ran over and read what was written on the directional arrows.
[WARTWOOD SWAMP 10 MILES]
[TOAD TOWER 20 MILES]
[NEWTOPIA 200 MILES]
Olivier grasped his head, trying his best not to have a panic attack. He had no idea where he was..
..but, he certainly wasn't in the Boiling Isles anymore.
[End of Part Five]
