Chapter 30: The Epic Sleepover: Part Five
[Earlier..]
Amity was wandering around the Observatory...ALONE,
as she had lost track of Olivier at some point and was now looking around aimlessly.
Amity soon got lost in her own thoughts, the reason for her search quickly forgotten.
And as usual, her thoughts were rules over her broken friendship with Olivier Clawthorne.
She didn't know why this was becoming such an obsession for her.
Afterall...many friends come-and-go, so WHY was fixing THIS friendship so important to her?!
well...Probably because she valued Olivier just as much as Willow.
And in both cases, losing them both had been her own fault...her own choice.
And so...It was HER mess to fix.
(("SKREE!"))
Amity jumped upon hearing a sudden screeching sound.
She then looked up...and saw a green feathered hawk perch atop a bookshelf.
Amity frowned as she stared up at Olivier's Palisman.
It bore the same eyes as his (only with deep scars, which paralleled his own.)
She doubted Olivier would've deliberated given his Palisman scars,
considering what happened to HIM. which left Amity wondering how Fleetwing got them.
(too bad Palismens couldn't speak. well...at least not in a language that could be understood by Witches.)
Amity continued to stare at the Hawk that stared right back at her with Gold and Sapphire Eyes.
It made her think back to another old memory of her childhood...back when she was happier.
She remembered one of many sleepovers that she shared with Willow and Olivier,
and among their many random conversations, the topic of Palismans DID pop up.
[***FLASHBACK***]
In a Treehouse, three sat in a circle as they stared images in a Crystal Ball.
Apart from some candles, it was the only source of light within the Treehouse
as it was night time, and it was VERY dark outside due to them being in a forest.
"Hey, Ollie." spoke Willow.
"Yeah?"
"Your grandpa is a Palisman Carver, right?"
"He was, but he mainly teaches that." explained Olivier.
"These days, he collects Palistrom seeds and explores for places to plant trees."
"Why?, there is plenty of space in these woods." remarked Amity.
"Grandpa doesn't think they are safe to plant Palistrom Trees." explained Olivier.
"He says the Emperor's Coven have been cutting them down for non-Palisman uses."
Amity groaned. "Sheesh, is everyone EXCEPT your Aunt Lilith against the Emperor Belos!?
Because it feels like almost everyone in your family hates him for some reason."
"It isn't my place to judge...But, the inside of the Emperor's Palace DOES creep me out." said Olivier.
"I still can't believe you get to train there." "remarked Amity.
"If only I could switch bodies with you for ONE DAY..."
"It isn't as fun as you think it might be." spoke Olivier.
"Aunt Lily is a perfectionist, AND I'm not allowed beyond the East Wing."
"Why's that?" asked Amity.
"Because she said so...IS what she told me when I asked that very question." answered Olivier.
There was a brief pause.
"Let's get back on topic: Palismans." spoke Willow.
"When we're experienced enough...What Palisman would you like to have?"
"Grandpa Says that Palismans CHOOSE their users, not the other way around." spoke Olivier.
"I know...But, for fun: What type of Palisman would you like?" asked Willow, again.
Olivier thought for a moment. "Okay, before I tell you: PROMISE not to laugh."
"Let me guess: An Owl." answered Amity.
Olivier stared at the brunette girl with wide eyes. "HOW DID YOU-!?"
"You live in a place called "The Owl House", Ollie." smirked Amity.
"And I've seen how you act around your mom's Palisman, Albert."
"OWLbert." corrected Olivier.
"Same thing." defended Amity.
"I think I'd like a Palisman that's CUTE." spoke up Willow. "Like Baby Bumblebee!"
"Ladybugs are also cute." spoke Olivier.
"no they're not." replied Willow, bluntly.
"but-"
"ollie, TRUST ME: drop it." spoke Amity, in a warning tone.
"that is a road you DO NOT want to go down."
Olivier paused, staring at Amity as if she were crazy. "oh...kaaaay."
Willow finally looked at Amity. "So, Amity...What sort of Palisman would you like?"
Amity became silent as she tried to think. "I...never really gave it any thought."
"Well, no time like the present then." said Olivier, witty as ever.
Amity took some time to really think. "hmm...well. I do think Wolves are cool."
Olivier and Willow stared at Amity for a moment. "No argument there." said Willow.
"But, I can't really see you with a Wolf Palisman." added Olivier.
"Call me crazy, but you seem more like a Cat Person."
Amity raised an eyebrow at Olivier. "alright then: You're Crazy."
Olivier smirked. "like a fox."
"Oh, well I'm calling then: Your Palisman is SO Gonna be a Fox."
Willow giggled. "Foxes ARE cute."
"nope, sorry. It's a Clawthorne Tradition to have BIRD Palismans, SO mine will be a Bird."
"Then, It'll probably be a PARROT." joked Amity, who laughed at her own joke.
Olivier scowled...but then laughed along with her.
"well...Whatever Palismans that we DO get. I know they'll become just as good friends as we are." spoke Olivier.
"Without a shadow of a doubt!" chimed Willow, smiling.
"Yep!" chirped Amity, also smiling.
Olivier then looked at Willow and Amity...getting serious.
"Can I say something personal?" asked Olivier.
"Of course!' said Willow.
"You know you can tell us ANYTHING, Ollie." said Amity.
Olivier smiled warmly. "I am...SO GLAD that we are friends."
Willow smiled. "we are too, Ollie."
"No, I mean it: Meeting you two was the BEST DAY of my WHOLE LIFE!" exclaimed Olivier, happily.
"and...I treasure every moment that we've spent together, and hope there are many more to come!"
Willow smiled. "Of course there will be, Olivier. a Friendship like ours is stronger than ANY Coven."
"We practically ARE our own Coven." added Amity. "The Olivamillow Coven."
Amity then scooted forward, and placed a hand on Olivier's shoulder. "and we always will be."
Olivier teared up, and then hugged Amity...who hugged him back.
Willow then joined in the hug, embracing both her friends.
"I love you girls." said Olivier, softly.
"and we love you, too." said Willow.
"...forever, and ever." said Amity.
[***END OF FLASHBACK***]
a small puddle formed at Amity's feet as tears dropped without pause.
Amity breathed out sharply as she wiped her eyes in a vain attempt to cease her crying.
Amity then looked down...and stared at her own reflection.
And in that moment, the young witch felt a seething rage for the girl looking back at her.
("LIAR!") thought Amity, as she angrily stomped on the puddle.
Amity then stomped again...causing herself to slip and fall on her rear.
Groaning, she slowly sat up and stayed in a sitting position for a moment.
"why..." spoke Amity to herself. "why did I do it? I had...EVERYTHING. Why did I throw it all away?"
((*chirp-chirp-chirp.*))
Amity looked up, and saw Fleetwing still perched atop a bookshelf and looking down at her.
The witch then blushed, feeling a tad embarrassed that her pratfall had been watched by the Palisman.
(and even wondered if he was laughing at her in his own way.)
Just then, Amity was broken from her inner thoughts by a distant sound of music.
Curious, she followed the sound...which led her to Olivier, who was just standing alone.
gently swaying his hands and arms in a fluid motion while his eyes remained closed.
Amity watched, tilting her head as she tried to comprehend what was going on.
The music was unlike anything she had heard before, but she mostly wondered
why Olivier was 'dancing', and not searching for the pink frog boy.
(('I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord...')) sung the voice from Olivier's phone.
(('And I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh, lord...
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord...'))
Amity watched as golden energy materialized from Olivier's body,
which gradually materialized over random objects, making them float.
Amity's mouth gaped as streams of gold magic flew around like shooting stars,
seemingly in orbit around Olivier, who didn't seem aware of what was happening around him.
Was this Bard Magic?...If it was, it looked so beautiful.
(('Well, if you told me you were drowning. I would not lend a hand.
I've seen your face before my friend...But I don't know if you know who I am!
Well I was there, and I saw what you did. I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been: It's all been a pack of lies!'))
As the next lines of the song were spoken, Olivier's golden light slowly turned blue.
The warmth that Amity initially felt suddenly became ice cold, and the magic appeared...more aggressive.
Amity wasn't an idiot. She knew this meant that Olivier was starting to feel angrier.
(and the context of the song's lyrics made it disturbingly clear what was on his mind.)
Amity kept to the shadows, her guilt and shame making her too afraid to reveal herself.
(('I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord...
I've been waiting for this moment for all my life. oh, lord, oh, lord...
Well, I remember! I remember, don't worry. How could I ever forget?
It's the first time, the last time we ever met...
But I know the reason why you keep this silence up. No, you don't fool me.
The hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows. It's no stranger to you and me!'))
Suddenly...Olivier's body flared with tremendous dark energy.
He yelled out as his body levitated, and his auburn hair turned jet black.
Amity gasped. She had seen Olivier in this state before...when he woke up, and nearly strangled her to death.
Even from her hiding place, she could feel the raw power radiating from her old friend.
It was a magic that felt very cold, yet was as volatile as the harshest blizzard.
(('And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord.
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord...
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord.
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord...'))
Amity watched in stunned silence as Olivier continued to pulse and flare with dark energy.
She was completely dumbfounded, which was a first for her,
as being a 'Top Student', she was used to having all the answers to every question.
But THIS...Whatever was happening to Olivier was completely new to her.
It went against everything that she knew about magic, and even beyond her understanding of 'Wild Magic.'
It both fascinated, and terrified her.
Olivier then growled low, balling up his fists as if struggling.
Amity then felt his energies shifting...which became more apparent
as Olivier's coal black hair slowly began to turn white as snow.
With a burst of energy, Olivier's form changed.
Now, he was glowing gold with snow white hair and a warm feeling radiating from him.
Amity then spotted a far off mirror, and got a good view at Olivier's face.
His once solid black eyes were now fully white, and glowing.
Amity swallowed hard. Despite the fact that she was attracted to girls,
she couldn't help but gaze at Olivier's new form and actually find it...Beautiful.
Almost as if he were an Angel from Human Folklore.
(('I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord, oh, lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord, oh, lord, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment all my life, oh, lord, oh, lord...'))
After a minute, the music soon ended...and Olivier's energies faded.
Thus reverting him back to normal as he dropped to his knees, looking tired and weary.
Olivier managed to pick himself up...and then he spoke: "It's rude to stare, you know."
Amity flinched, startled that she had been discovered.
With a groan, she revealed herself and approached her childhood friend.
"what were...What was THAT!?"
"Just something that I picked up during my time in Amphibia..." answered Olivier.
"But if you MUST know what I was doing specifically: I was attempting to achieve spiritual balance."
Amity looked confused. "huh?"
Olivier turned, and faced Amity.
"In some human cultures, they teach that within everyone's soul is Light and Darkness.
And that it is only when we balance these energies equally that we achieve inner peace."
Olivier then scowled as he looked away for a moment. "ever since...well. YOU KNOW."
Olivier then rubbed the side of his head, briefly flashing one of his scars to Amity.
Amity looked away, Still unable to look upon Olivier's scars without feeling great shame.
"I've...never been the same since *THAT* Night." continued Olivier, his tone dark.
"I changed, became angrier. I...didn't think much of it at the time. But while in Amphibia,
I was forced to face the bitter truth that (much like my own mother,) there is a 'Monster' deep within me."
Olivier then balled up his fist, which briefly flared with blue energy. "and...it's almost consumed me."
Amity looked at Olivier with soft eyes. "I...i know. I've seen it once before."
Olivier fell silent for a moment. he then turned away, staring off.
"Anne sometimes teaches me things about her family's culture." continued Olivier.
"One of which being Thai Spiritualism, and finding inner peace.
I've seen what happens to a powerful witch once they are completely consumed by their inner darkness.
I don't want that to happen to me, so I've been trying to keep mine under control."
Amity looked at Olivier. "have you...made much progress?"
"sometimes...but I have 'slipped up', on occasion." answered Olivier.
Amity grimaced as she recalled the time Olivier woke up,
and instantly became some kind of 'Shadow Demon' that attacked her on sight.
"I don't expect things will get much easier now that I'm...HOME." continued Olivier.
"I have A LOT of bad memories tied to these Isles...Far too many."
"but...You DO have good ones, right?" inquired Amity, hopeful.
Olivier shook his head. "not enough."
((*SKREEEE!*))
Amity ducked as Fleetwing swooped down, and perched onto Olivier's extended forearm.
"Shh-shouldn't we be looking for that Pink Frog Kid?" spoke Amity.
"SPRIG." said Olivier. "And, I have already searched this area: He isn't here."
"oh...Do you think the others have found him yet?" asked Amity.
"They haven't called, so probably not." said Olivier, as he petted Fleetwing.
"But as I've searched everywhere here, we should rejoin the others once Maddie and Polly get back."
Before Amity could ask a follow-up question, a pair of familiar frog children suddenly dropped out from nowhere.
"Hey, Olivier!" exclaimed Maddie, happily.
Polly gave Amity the evil eye. "HELLO, BLIGHT." growled Polly.
Olivier smiled as she picked up Maddie, and placed her down on the floor. "No luck finding Sprig?"
"No, but he's DEFINITELY been around here." answered Polly.
"Books are laying all over the place, and we found messes everywhere."
"That certainly sounds like Sprig." mused Olivier. "Kid never could keep his hands off of things."
Amity smiled. "I remember someone who was ALSO like that."
Olivier's face turned red as he hid his face in embarrassment. "ye-yeah, well...we ALL do dumb stuff as kids."stuttered Olivier.
Amity chuckled at Olivier's expense...However a sharp growl from Olivier quickly silenced her laughter.
It was at that moment, a loud noise was heard that sounded like a distant crash.
Everyone looked to where the sound came from, with all but Olivier confused about it.
"What in the realm was THAT?!" exclaimed Amity.
"Well if I were a betting boy, I'd wager it has something to do with Sprig." mused Olivier.
"THEN WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR!?" exclaimed Polly, raring to go.
"Wait, what about the others?!" spoke Amity. "shouldn't we find Luz, Willow an-"
"If I were a Gambling Girl, then I would wager they ALSO heard that noise." said Maddie (with a smug grin.)
"Hmm-Hm. I think so, too." said Olivier.
Amity exhaled in defeat. "if you say so..."
"Yeah, we DO. But if you want to go looking for the others, then you're welcome to that." snarked Olivier.
Amity scowled in response. "let's just go."
"FINALLY!" exclaimed Polly, who hopped off and charged ahead.
"TITAN, that little one is like a literal Ball of Fire." spoke Amity, astonished.
Olivier chortled. "You have NO IDEA..."
[Later..]
a door opened, and Luz, Willow and Anne all walked into a new room.
"Wooooow..." spoked Luz, in awe. "Would you look at THIS!"
Anne, and even Willow froze as they looked at the large chamber they were in.
The room was massive, curved walls that shaped the room into a perfect circle.
Both the floor and walls looked hand carved, and sported very detailed art and glyphs.
The ceiling, however. Really caught everyone's eyes as it was a gleaming crystal of shimmering rainbow colors.
"this is...WOW." spoke Anne, astonished. "What even IS this place!?"
"I see you've found "The Peril Chamber..." spoke a voice.
The trio looked back, and saw Olivier, Amity, and Maddie & Polly enter the room.
"HEY!, you made it." exclaimed Anne, who ran over and hugged Olivier.
Luz ran over to Amity...but stopped short from hugging her.
Both girls averted their gaze, both their faces as red as tomatoes.
"What's a...Peril Chamber?" asked Polly, as she jumped from Maddie's grasp. "Sounds fun."
Olivier parted from Anne, and walked further into the room.
"It's basically a Training Room that my grandparents used to practice magic." explained Olivier.
"Most powerful witches have such a room in their homes. Even Aunt Lily has one in the Emperor's Palace."
Amity looked up at the hanging crystals up on the ceiling.
"yeah, I've trained in such rooms...but I've NEVER seen anything like that before!"
Olivier looked up at the obvious point of interest.
"Yeah! what are those things, Ollie?" asked Anne, curious.
"It's what makes this Training Room a "Peril Chamber." began Olivier.
"Those crystals are part of a complex Illusion Machine. Once active, it casts a powerful illusion spell
over the entire room, Transforming it into any environment AND producing any opponents that you desire."
Luz, Amity, Willow, Maddie and Polly all widened their eyes, astonished at this.
Anne was also amazed, but then took a moment to think about this.
"a training room that creates custom combat simulations..." pondered Anne.
"HEY!, this is like 'The Pain Room' from The X-Force!"
While Amity and Willow were confused at what Anne was talking about,
Luz (and even Olivier, Maddie and Polly) understood what the girl was referencing.
"Yeah, It kinda is!" exclaimed Luz.
"I suppose that is accurate, all things considered." added Olivier.
Luz then ran up ahead, gazing up excitedly. "Oh, we NEED to try this thing out...At least ONCE!"
"YEAH!" exclaimed Polly, jumping up and down. "Polly CRAVES Violence!"
As Olivier walked to the center of the room, Amity looked at Willow and said: "THAT" is supposed to be a Baby!?"
Everyone gathered together as Olivier examined a lone pedestal with a claw-like shape at the top.
"What is it, Olivier?" aske Maddie, curious.
"Yeah, hun. is something wrong?" added Anne.
"Yes. There is supposed to be a crystal orb here." spoke Olivier.
"The Orb is what triggers the above crystals. Without it, nothing works."
"Why's that?" asked Luz.
"The orb can read the mind of whoever holds it." explained Olivier.
"It then projects those thoughts into the crystals above us, which then create illusions based on said thoughts."
Polly looked puzzled. "what?"
"He means anything that we imagine can become real." said Maddie. "Which is AWESOME!"
"But, where is the-"
((*SHING!*))
Suddenly, the hanging crystals above began to glimmer and shine.
Everyone looked up, and gasped as a blinding light struck down upon them.
"LOOK OU-AAAAHH!" exclaimed Luz, shielding her eyes.
Everyone rubbed their blinded eyes trying to restore their vision.
Slowly it returned...and everyone froze upon seeing that the room had changed.
No more were they in a large, round chamber with hanging crystals.
NOW, the group found themselves in what looked like the Throne Room of Castle.
"What is this place?..." spoke Luz.
"I...I don't know," said Willow.
"I would say it looked like the Emperor's Palace, but...It looks too different." spoke Amity.
"Yeah, it doesn't look...EVIL." mused Luz. "and...ARE WE FLYING IN THE SKY!?"
"oh, no." spoke Anne, a look of horror on her face. "not here...NOT AGAIN!"
Luz, Amity and Willow looked over at Anne, Maddie and Polly...who looked horrified.
It was almost as if they were reliving something that was Traumatizing.
"Anne?...wa-what's wrong?" asked Luz, concerned.
Amity and Willow looked to Olivier...he glared as he looked at something ahead of him.
Everyone looked, and saw a figure slowly materialize before them in a shimmer of light.
(("...In good time, my dear.")) spoke a deep, distorted voice
(("But first, I'm gonna let you all in on a little secret..."))
The mysterious figure finally materialized...Revealed to the very shocked Luz, Amity and Willow
to be a towering giant that resembled a lizard, but dressed in the garbs of a King, or Emperor.
(("There was a time when Newtopia was truly great.")) spoke the Giant King.
(("but that greatness was stolen from us. Centuries of prosperity brought to an end because of me.
I was weak, trusting those who said they were my friends and because of that, the music box was taken under my watch.
It cost us everything. and after a thousand years, no one even remembers our legacy."))
Luz, Amity and Willow looked at Anne and Olivier again.
Anne was still frozen in stunned silence, same as Maddie and Polly.
Olivier, however. Remained staring up at the Giant with an anger even Amity had never seen.
"Oh-Olivier..." spoke Luz. "who...IS that?!"
Olivier growled low. "King Andrias...Leviathan. the Tyrant Ruler of Amphibia."
(("But now, at long last, the box is back.")) continued King Andrias.
(("And with its power, Newtopia will be returned to glory.
For you see, my ancestors weren't frail explorers...they were glorious conquerors!"))
At that moment, multiple shimmering lights materialized. surrounding the group.
Anne and the Frogs broke from their shock, and looked around as the lights took familiar forms.
"EVIL FROBOS!" exclaimed Polly.
As the Frobots surrounded the group, clicking their weapons,
the King Andrias Illusion continued to speak in a commanding manner.
(("I'm sorry, Anne. But I'm afraid you and your friends can't go home just yet.
Wouldn't want you telling anyone about the coming invasion.
Now that I have the box back, I can finish the work my ancestors started.
From this castle, I will not only rule over this world, but all worlds!" (*laughs evilly*))
Luz, Willow and Amity looked stunned. Coming Invasion?, Rule ALL Worlds!?
What in the Demon Realm was going on here!?
"Everyone..." spoke Olivier, whose hands flared up with magical energy.
"I hope you're all ready for a fight, because like it or not...We're getting one."
(("ATTACK!")) commanded King Andrias, drawing out a sword with a superheated blade.
[End of Part 30]
